The European Union is looking at retaliatory actions against the USA in what is looking more and more like a trade war:

The EU has condemned US plans for tough tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, saying they jeopardise European jobs.
EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom set out plans to retaliate against the proposed US tariffs.
These include higher import duties on bourbon, peanut butter, cranberries, orange juice, steel, and industrial products, she said.
On Tuesday, Donald Trump’s top economic advisor Gary Cohn, who opposes tariffs, resigned.
That was after Mr Trump said EU trade rules make it “impossible” for US firms to do business with the bloc.
Ms Malmstrom said the US justification for the proposed 25% tariff on steel imports and 10% tariff on aluminium was that US national security is threatened.
“We have serious doubt about that justification. We cannot see how the European Union, friends, and allies in Nato, can be a threat to national security in the US,” she said.
“We find that assumption deeply unjust.”
What action is the EU considering?
Ms Malmstrom said the EU will launch proceedings at the World Trade Organisation with other members of the organisation. It would take measures to try to deal with am expected surge of steel and aluminium imports into the EU.
“From what understand, the motivation of the US is an economic safeguard measure in disguise, not a national security measure,” she said.
The EU would take measures that match the economic loss suffered by the EU.
“We are discussing different US products on which different import tariffs can be imposed,” she said.
She added that the root cause of the problem with steel and aluminium is “global overcapacity” propped up by “massive state subsidies… under non-market conditions.” http://www.bbc.com/news/business-43316228
Germany and EU hit back at Donald Trump’s trade war threat
German and EU politicians are threatening tit-for-tat import tariffs to retaliate against the US president’s plan to impose a 25-percent duty on EU steel. The EU is aiming to tax Harley Davidsons and bourbon whisky.
Germany’s political leadership has reacted sharply to President Donald Trump’s tweets threatening “a tax” on European cars that “freely pour into the US,” and a declaration, made last Thursday before industry executives, that the US would impose a 25-percent tariff on steel imports and a 10-percent tariff on aluminum.
The EU has said it is planning to forge a coalition of countries to agree a unified reaction to Trump’s move. According to the European news portal Euractiv, European Commission officials are in contact with other affected countries, including Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Australia and Turkey.
But the EU is reportedly also prepared to react alone, and is preparing to approve a package of measures on Wednesday that will seek, among other things, to settle the dispute with the US and agree upon retaliatory measures. …
The German government also promptly ramped up its rhetoric in reaction to Trump. “If blanket US import duties on aluminum and steel are imposed, it will lead to ruptures in world trade,” German Economy Minister Brigitte Zypries said in a statement. “Should Trump follow his words with actions, Europe will reply proportionately. It is not credible that European or German steel imports should endanger the national security of the US.” …
Germany’s representatives in the EU joined in the chorus condemning Trump’s policy. “Mr. Trump isn’t imposing penalty duties, he’s isolating,” said Bernd Lange, trade policy spokesman for the Social Democrats in the European Parliament and chairman of its trade committee. “We haven’t done anything wrong. We stick to the rules of the International Trade Organization, and that’s why we have to implement countermeasures.”

Collectively, the EU exports a lot of steel to the USA–about as much as Canada, which is the leading source of USA imports. And Europe is getting very mad about Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs.

And while his basic impression of timing was off it is correct that trade issues will be a factor that will trigger WWIII. A war that will be against the USA, Canada, and UK by a power that will reorganize (Revelation 17:12-13). A Europe that is angry at the UK for Brexit and one that is mad at the USA for a host of reasons (including decisions of its President Donald Trump and its Congress). …
Trade wars increase costs and international tensions.
It should also be noted that at least partially due to sanctions talk from US President Trump, in late 2017, China, Russia, and Venezuela took steps to move away from the US dollar as the world’s primary reserve currency. The eventual loss of the US dollar’s status as the world’s main reserve currency will harm the economy of the USA in many ways. While that is not going to happen in 2018, trade disputes/sanctions are pushing more of the world away from the US dollar.
Furthermore, with the vote in the United Kingdom to exit from the European Union (called Brexit) and the election of Donald Trump in the USA, this has caused a greater separation from Europe, and the USA and UK both are seeking greater trade ties with each other. Mexico is looking to Europe. Europe is looking to Latin America and Asia.

In a sense, this has happened. In 2017, European, and in particular German, leaders were actively courting trade as the USA dropped its participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP) and made took other steps against certain existing trade arrangements.
US President Trump’s statements to the United Nations about trade and “America first” on September 19, 2017, further told parts of the world that the US wants to change trade practices in ways that many nations do not believe will be beneficial—and this helps open the door for the European Union
Additionally, European leaders have stated that they no longer want ‘subservience’ to the USA and want to put “Europe first” (in contrast to the “America first” campaign slogan that Donald Trump has used). …
The Europeans warned that the US sanctions bill could lead to a trade war—a trade war some EU leaders claimed that Europe would win.
While nations do not normally economically ‘win’ a trade war, political leaders have found them helpful for a variety of reasons.
Trade issues are important and consistent with end time biblical prophecies.
Events in the USA and Europe are aligning with the understanding of biblical prophecy that we in the Continuing Church of God hold and teach.
We in the Continuing Church of God “have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:19, KJV).”
Yet, while trade will be a factor in what can be called World War III, this war will NOT be a potential conflict with North Korea, but with Europe. And the ‘shooting’ aspect of this is at least 4 years away (for some details, watch Can the Great Tribulation begin in 2018?).
As far as my own writings on trade go, notice the following two posts from 2013:
For at least two decades, I have believed that a split would happen between the USA and the Europeans partially because of how the Europeans will view how the USA handles/mishandles bilateral trade issues (USA debt, GMO foods, relative military decline of the USA, weather, etc. are likely to be other factors).

Trade wars and other economic disagreements will be part of how European leaders will persuade many Europeans that the USA is not a friend, but an enemy. This is consistent with what I have been warning for years. …
The European Union is larger than the USA, generally has a total economic output greater than that of the USA, is (in some areas) becoming more technologically advanced than the USA, and can exert unique pressures on the USA. Trade wars were a factor in Japan bombing the USA at Pearl Harbor and getting the USA into WWII.
Now, the Bible shows that Europe will dominate trade and world economy after it eliminates the USA (cf. Daniel 11:39; Revelation chapters 13, 17, 18). Steps to make that happen are going on now!
That is not all that is happening with Europe.
Former US Presidential advisor Steve Bannon expressed concerns yesterday about Europe and cryptocurrencies:
Steve Bannon Lauds Cryptocurrency As A Tool To Resist the ‘European Establishment’
Steve Bannon, former Chief Strategist to US President Donald Trump, said that cryptocurrencies could be an asset to the European anti-establishment movement at an event sponsored by the Swiss newspaper Die Weltwoche on March 6.
At his lecture in Zurich, Bannon stated that cryptocurrencies and the Blockchain will “empower [the populist] movement, empower companies, [and] empower governments to get away from the central banks that debase your currency and makes slave wages.”
With cryptocurrency “We take control of the central banks away. That will give us the power again.” Bannon sees broad use and integration of cryptocurrencies and the Blockchain as means of emancipation from establishment forces that have created “a new serfdom.”
“Once you take control of your currency, once you take control of your data, once you take control of your citizenship, that’s when you’re going to have true freedom,” said Bannon.
Bannon accused governments, central banks, and tech companies of taking away the rights and identities of ordinary people and using them for their own purposes.
Bannon is travelling in Europe on a speaking tour following right-wing victories in the recent Italian elections. Steve Bannon does not seem to realize how this will end. The European establishment will change, but not quite as Steve Bannon hopes–Europe will end up under a dictator:
12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)
Europe will end up with the dictatorship of the Beast the Bible warns against.
But yes, Steve Bannon, I do expect digital/cryptocurrencies to be used in Europe.
Yet, this will not result in independent nationalism, but instead will assist in the fulfillment of the following prophecies:
1 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. 2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. (Revelation 13:1-2, ESV)

A cashless society is one where buying and selling can be controlled. This is not something that was possible when Jesus had the Apostle John pen the above. But it is possible now with technology–but that does not necessarily mean a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, but simply digital money. More and more in the world, in general, and Europe in particular, are moving that way.
666 will arise in Europe.
Digital currencies, along with political and trade disputes with the USA and UK, will help bring this about.
