Karl Guttenberg on USA espionage and damage to US-German relations; He calls Obama the ‘most detached President’ in decades

Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg spoke to CNN about the problems that the USA has caused with Germany regarding the espionage scandals:

Germany needs U.S. partnership on spying but must first see a change from Washington and “probably the most detached President [in] decades,” former German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday.

There is “a level of mistrust that needs to be fixed, and it needs to be fixed from Washington,” Guttenberg told Amanpour in London.

Trust between the two countries has fallen to dangerous lows as new allegations emerged that the U.S. recruited a spy inside Germany’s secret service.

Berlin has since ordered the top U.S. spy in the country to leave – the first time a close American ally has expelled a CIA station chief…

Germany of course is a country with its own dark history of government spying, and public opinion on America has soured as a result of the revelations…

The outrage in Germany now is not just about the Americans “getting caught,” he said.

“It’s a process now that has developed over the last couple of months, since last year, since the NSA revelations. And it is serious when you look at the general mood right now in Germany.”

Guttenberg served as minister under Chancellor Angela Merkel, and is still in regular touch with her.

Asking the CIA station chief to leave is “a serious matter,” but one that was necessary, he said, “because there was no reaction in the last couple of months from Washington.”

President Obama, he said, is “not seemingly capable to communicate properly on an eye-to-eye level with other heads of state.”

Case in point: The tapping of Merkel’s phone.

“[President Obama] knew it already last summer; what do you do in such a moment? You pick up the phone, you call the Chancellor, tell her, ‘Well, we messed up; let’s try to fix it.’ Didn’t happen.”

“After that, she campaigned, here at a campaign in Germany, defending the U.S. after the NSA revelations. It was a high risk for her.”

“And then the press revealed the phone tapping of Angela Merkel’s … cell phone.”

“Did he call then? No, it was her calling.”

Even with American presidents “the Germans struggled with,” such as George W. Bush, “we had on the top level a relationship that functioned, so that they may have bashed each other in public, but they could pick up the phone” and have cooperation.

On the substance of intelligence sharing, Guttenberg said that Germany needs U.S. support.

“We have an urgent need for cooperation looking at the challenges we are facing right now. Europe is still not capable of handling the crisis around Europe by itself – look at Ukraine, look at the Middle East at the moment.”

Baron Guttenberg was once the Defense Minister for Germany until he was embarrassed by a plagiarism scandal in 2011, then voluntarily resigned (Angela Merkel had said that he did not have to leave or resign) and went on a self-imposed exile to the USA.

His points that the USA President did not handle this as he should have, resonate around the world. The Europeans and Germans are quite upset about this and will not forget.

This will not bode well for the USA.

Mr Obama shares one problem that could cripple what remains of his presidency – most people no longer trust him. The sentiment spans foreign allies as well as domestic critics. When trust goes, respect is seldom far behind.

The most surprising example is Germany. It was in Berlin in 2008 that then Senator Obama unveiled his global promise – an America that could once again be trusted. Germans no longer believe it. In the wake of the “friendly spying” ring allegations, less than 40 per cent of Germans consider the US a trustworthy partner, according to one survey. …

Senior German figures cannot agree whether Mr Obama was unaware of Washington’s double agents, or dissembling. Either way, when Mr Obama spoke to Angela Merkel the day before the initial revelations he did not raise it. It was enough to make you want to cry, said Wolfgang Schäuble, the finance minister. Never before has a close US ally expelled a CIA station chief.,,,

Mr Obama promises something will happen – say a tightening of data surveillance safeguards, or a drive to overhaul US immigration policy – people are no longer inclined to take him at his word. They may believe he means what he says. But they do not trust his ability to deliver. …

Most Americans say they no longer personally trust Mr Obama. And fewer than 30 per cent express trust in the office of the presidency. …

According to Mark Knoller, who chronicles the habits of US presidents, Mr Obama has now played golf 179 times – considerably more than George W Bush, his golf-loving predecessor. Mr Obama dislikes spending time with fellow politicians. But he seems happy to attend endless fundraisers. He has now clocked up 393 fundraising events since becoming president, almost double that of Mr Bush.

Barack Obama’s apparent hypocrisy is a problem. This is and the espionage are serious problems. This will not simply be forgotten by the Germans after Barack Obama is no longer the USA president (see also Germany in Biblical and Catholic Prophecy) ultimately it will help lead to World War III (see also World War III: Steps in Progress).

The Bible warns that the end time descendants of Assyria (including the Germans) will go against ‘an hypocritical nation’ (Isaiah 10:6, KJV).
