Obama pleased with Iran framework, others have concerns

U.S. President Barack Obama says the framework nuclear deal reached with Iran is a “good deal” that was reached through “tough, principled diplomacy.”

Iran has agreed to “not stockpile” the materials needed to build a weapon, Obama said in his weekly address Saturday. The president noted that “international inspectors will have unprecedented access to Iran’s nuclear program because Iran will face more inspections than any other country.

“If Iran cheats, the world will know it…. This deal is not based on trust, it’s based on unprecedented verification,” the president said.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said the framework agreement reached with world powers will protect Iran’s nuclear rights and provide relief from international sanctions.

In a televised address to the nation Friday, Rouhani said the agreement is an acceptance of Iran’s right to enrich uranium on its own territory, saying the country will be pursing peaceful goals. He said centrifuges have to “spin,” while “peoples’ lives and the economy have to move forward.”

He also said the development of Iran’s nuclear program poses no threat to other countries. …

Compliance would relieve sanctions

Different restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program would continue for a quarter-century. In return for compliance, international sanctions will be gradually lifted.

Iran has repeatedly said it is not interested in building a nuclear bomb, and the country’s Islamic leaders have issued rulings banning such weapons. Iran will be able to install significantly more advanced centrifuges for enriching uranium after the first 10 years of a final nuclear deal, it emerged on Saturday, according to a French fact sheet on this week’s accord between Tehran and a group of six world powers.

While there wasn’t detail on how many of the advanced machines Iran would be able to deploy, Tehran’s agreement with the U.S. and its negotiating partners could strengthen concerns among skeptics that a future deal would do too little to prevent Iran’s access to a nuclear weapon over the medium term. …

In the past, Iran has installed but not used IR-2 centrifuges. It hasn’t installed IR-4 machines to enrich uranium. Instead it has relied on older first-generation machines called IR-1s.

The IR-2s are said by experts to be between three and five times more efficient in producing enriched uranium. The IR-4s are several times more sophisticated than the IR2s. …

By being allowed to install IR-2 and IR-4 machines after 10 years, Iran could have the capacity to produce enough nuclear fuel for a bomb significantly faster. Iran wants to develop nuclear weapons. Barack Obama does not see this as a threat. Israel and a lot of the Arab nations do.

Despite what it thinks, this will not end up well for Iran. Israel and the USA itself may also be affected.

We in the Continuing Church of God do not believe that Iran will be the final King of the South of Bible prophecy (cf. Daniel 11:4-43). Because of that, I have tended to believe that Iran may somehow get “neutralized” before this final king rises up. And it may be that provoking some type of conflict with Israel (through an attack or through simply possessing nuclear bombs) may result in Israel hitting Iran hard enough militarily to greatly reduce Iran’s influence in the Islamic world.

That is part of why I do not believe that this deal will work out truly well for Iran.
