The United States wants to put tariffs on $11.2 billion worth of EU goods — from airplanes to Gouda cheese and olives — to offset what it says are unfair European subsidies for plane maker Airbus.

While the size of the tariffs is small compared with the hundreds of billions the U.S. and China are taxing in their trade war, it suggests a breakdown in talks with the European Union over trade at a time when the economy is already slowing sharply.

The U.S. and EU have been negotiating since last year about how to avoid tariffs that President Donald Trump has wanted to impose to reduce a trade deficit with countries like Germany. But experts warn that tariffs lead to higher consumer prices in countries that impose them and can hurt overall economic growth.

The U.S. Trade Representative’s office released late Monday a list of EU products it would tax in anticipation of a ruling by the World Trade Organization this summer.

The U.S. had in 2004 complained to the WTO, which sets the rules for trade and settles disputes, that the EU was providing unfair support to Airbus. The WTO ruled in May last year that the EU had in fact provided some illegal subsidies to Airbus, hurting U.S. manufacturer Boeing.

The White House on Monday threatened to impose new tariffs on European products over subsidies to aerospace giant Airbus.

Relations between the US and the European Union have dived under President Donald Trump, in part because of his “America First” approach that emphasizes protectionist policies aimed at shoring up American industry.

Trump commented on the tariffs on Twitter on Tuesday, saying “The EU has taken advantage of the US on trade for many years. It will soon stop!”

The World Trade Organization finds that the European Union subsidies to Airbus has adversely impacted the United States, which will now put Tariffs on $11 Billion of EU products! The EU has taken advantage of the U.S. on trade for many years. It will soon stop!

Europe slams ‘exaggerated’ US tariff threat and prepares to retaliate

The EU has hit back at new U.S. proposals to target European goods with tariffs, following a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling over subsidies for Airbus.

Trade tensions between the EU and U.S. flared Monday after the U.S. said it’s considering $11 billion worth of retaliatory tariffs on a range of goods in response to illegal subsidies the EU granted to the aerospace firm. …

“The EU is confident that the level of countermeasures on which the notice is based is greatly exaggerated. The amount of WTO authorized retaliation can only be determined by the WTO-appointed arbitrator,” a Commission spokesman said.

The European Commission spokesman also said Tuesday that Brussels is ready to retaliate in kind, noting that in the parallel Boeing dispute, “the determination of EU retaliation rights is also coming closer and the EU will request the WTO-appointed arbitrator to determine the EU’s retaliation rights.”

Some analysts have accused the U.S. of double standards. GAM’s Investment Director for Global Equities, Ali Miremadi, said the U.S.′ tariff proposal was “quite bold.”

The USA is still having massive trade deficits (see WSJ: U.S. Posts Record Annual Trade Deficit) and its President Trump has repeatedly pointed to tariffs as a way to deal with trade imbalances.

But the European Union and China have been upset by such threats. The EU and China have scheduled meetings that begin today:

EU-China Summit and the subsequent 16+1 gathering a few days later mark a new era for Eurasia where the East is coming to the West with trade and services and not vice-versa like before. The first-mentioned will take place on 9 April in Brussels while the second will commence on the 12^th in the Croatian port city of Dubrovnik, and both events are occurring against several significant strategic backdrops.

Firstly, the trans-Atlantic rift between the US and the EU has widened over the past two years and pushed the bloc to strengthen its partnership with China. Secondly, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe are rising as important voices of reform within the EU and have also interestingly become China’s economic launch pad into the continent. The Trump Administration has helped push China and the EU closer together on trade matters.

For a time, Babylon will dominate world trade:

2 And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.” (Revelation 18:2-3).

While ‘Babylon’ will not fully reign in 2019, with the USA pulling out of trade deals and/or wishing to change them, steps are occurring that are pushing Europe to dominate trade (watch Trade Wars: Are COG warnings coming to pass?). The Europeans have been working with Latin America, China, Russia’s Eurasian Union, and other areas of the world to try to set up its dominance of world trade as well as standards for world trade.

Threats of tariffs and sanctions by the USA are getting the Europeans to work to try to develop trade in Asia (see EU makes world’s largest ‘free trade deal’ as some see EU moving towards totalitarian fascism and watch China’s Silk Road and Babylon the Great) and Latin America (see EU looking to make world’s biggest trade deal with South America).

The Bible prophesies the following in the Book of Revelation:

2 … Babylon … 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury. (Revelation 18:2,3)

The above is referring to the fact that nations of the world are prophesied to get wealthy trading with end time Babylon, which will be a European entity. This European power will have religious ties to the City of Seven Hills–the Church of Rome:

1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.” (Revelation 17:1-2)

9 Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. … 18 And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.” (Revelation 17:9,18)

The Bible tells of a trading power arising in Europe that is tied to the City of Seven Hills. Europe, the United Nations, and the Vatican have stated that they have agreed on essentially the same future for the world.

China is also frustrated with the USA under Donald Trump and is pushing for trade matters like the Europeans.

Ultimately, this will not go as well for the USA as the Trump Administration hopes. I have been warning since before Donald Trump became president that there would be “unintended consequences” of his policies.

Trade will be a factor in what can be called World War III–and this war will be a conflict with Europe (but the ‘shooting’ aspect of this will not happen before 2023; for some details, see When Will the Great Tribulation Begin?).
