VOA: Russia Sees ‘Brexit’ Weakening European Resolve
(Source: http://masterinvestor.co.uk/category/brexit/)
Officially, Russia has not taken a position on the vote in the UK to exit the European Union (EU). But many believe it favors a Brexit. Voice of America (VOA) reports the following:
Russia Sees ‘Brexit’ Weakening European Resolve, Analysts Say
June 4, 2016
MOSCOW—As Britain contemplates leaving the European Union with a June 23 referendum, Russia is seen as one of the few countries in Europe favoring a so-called “Brexit” from the EU.
While pubs in Britain are buzzing with debate over whether to leave the European Union, at those in Russia, many locals support a Brexit.
“I think England is such a distinctive country that they really don’t need the European Union, because they are already distanced from those union governments,” radio presenter Marina Karpova said while tucking into some traditional pub food at Molly Gwynn’s in Moscow. “I think they’d get on wonderfully outside the European Union.”
Other Muscovites disagree.
“They have support from all of Europe,” said amateur athlete Farukh Mukhmadeev, across from the British Queen pub and just around the corner from Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater. “If they exit, then they’ll become independent and thus economically vulnerable and maybe more. So I think it’s better for them to stay in the EU.”
More frequent rhetoric
The Kremlin has taken no official position on the Brexit, or any other possible departures from the EU. But since Western sanctions were enacted over Russia’s actions in Ukraine, there is more frequent anti-EU rhetoric from Russian politicians and state-controlled media.
Some Russians repeat Kremlin propaganda claims that Britain, as part of the West, aims to weaken Russia, regardless.
“Even if formally England exits the European Union, its connections will remain intact. It will still work and do everything it can to harm Russia,” said Nadezhda Stepanova, standing just meters from where a Congolese man dressed as a British ceremonial guardian known as a Yeomen Warder, also called a Beefeater, hands out fliers for the British Queen pub.
Russian support for European politicians and groups who want their countries to break away from the EU, or Brussels-centralized policies, and its Western allies has been evident. Russian state bank loans have gone to the French far-right party of Marine Le Pen, and the Kremlin has courted Euro-skeptics across the political spectrum.
“Russia is openly supporting political forces on the radical left and on the radical right that are openly against the idea of the European Union and calling for the abolition of the European Union,” said Peter Kreko, director of the Political Capital Institute research institution in Budapest, via Skype.
Political analysts say the Kremlin hopes a British exit will weaken European resolve against a resurgent Russia and lead to the lifting of Western sanctions. Although still marginal, European political voices have grown in France, Germany, Greece and other nations calling for the sanctions to be removed.
Departure of a foe
With a Brexit, the EU would lose one of its strongest opponents of Russian influence in Europe, Kreko said.
“So it’s partially about disintegrating the European Union as a whole and destabilizing it,” he said. “On the other hand, this is also about Great Britain, which is one of the fiercest critics of Vladimir Putin’s Russia.”
Weakening the EU as such, however, is not so much the Kremlin’s goal, according to Alexander Baunov of the Carnegie Moscow Center.
Despite the sanctions and political tensions, the EU remains Russia’s largest trading partner. “So poorer European Union means poorer Russia, actually,” Baunov said. “And weaker European Union, economically at least, means weaker Russia.”
The Kremlin’s goal is to quiet those voices in the EU it considers hostile toward Russia. “Less hostile mean(s) … turning some blind eye(s) toward some Russian ambitions, like integration of the post-Soviet space … around Russia,” Baunov said.
An EU without Britain might waver on sanctions against Russia and further embolden Putin’s ambitions. http://www.voanews.com/content/russia-sees-brexit-weakening-european-resolve/3361128.html
A Brexit means a BRitish EXIT from the European Union. Something that those in the UK are to vote on June 23, 2016–this is very soon as it is less than three weeks from now.
Many in Russia believe that the UK is more anti-Russian and influential that most in the EU.
What Russia seems to want is a Europe with less ties to the USA, and since the UK is closer to the USA in many ways than the other EU nations, if the UK leaves the EU, Russia undoubtedly sees this as helpful in various ways.
Now, officially, Russia has not taken a position. This is likely because 1) if it took an official position those opposed to a Brexit would be able to point to a Russian position as a reason to stay in the EU and 2) Russia wants to make more of an alliance with the EU, essentially hoping to pull it away from the USA, hence coming out publicly against the EU’s position for the UK to remain in would be badly perceived by the EU.
On the idea of Europe pulling away from the USA, notice the following that I read earlier today:
June 4, 2016
Polls in Europe and elsewhere taken by Pew and other such organizations show that majorities in many places identify America as the primary cause of global disorder. http://www.salon.com/2016/06/04/we_cant_have_more_of_the_same_the_very_real_dangers_of_hillary_clintons_foreign_policy/
Notice that the above did not say that the Europeans mainly view Russia as the cause of global disorder, but the USA.
Now, what will happen if the UK votes to leave the EU?
Well, despite Barack Obama’s comments that the UK would be at “the back of the queue” to negotiate a trade agreement with the U.S. if it votes to leave the European Union (see Germans again protest TTIP; Might Obama’s successor negotiate post-Brexit trade with the UK?), the reality is that if the UK votes to leave the EU, the USA and UK will likely come closer together.
US Presidential candidate Donald Trump is scheduled to be in the UK the day after the Brexit vote, and he has already stated he would happily negotiate a trade deal with Britain if it voted to leave the EU. He may well be expected to say something similar while he is in the UK.
What about Russia and the EU?
This is a bit tricky, but basically despite military concerns in Europe about Russia, I believe that there will ultimately be a deal between Europe and Russia to eliminate the USA.
Russia has long wanted Alaska back, despite selling it to the USA in the 1800s.
Even Stalin may have wanted to regain it according to the following story:
Atlanta Journal Constitution – Aug 7, 2010 excerpt…
Nearly 60 years ago, Alexander Vitebsky was a young Soviet officer stationed in Siberia, part of a massive force assembled to try to fulfill Joseph Stalin’s dream of invading Alaska.
“It was very secretive,” said Vitebsky, who, for decades afterward, also carried a secret — he dreamed of coming to America. “We didn’t buy what we were told about America.” (http://www.ajc.com/news/atlanta/atlantas-public-housing-is-587310.html)
Notice a different news story about a Russian prediction:
MOSCOW — For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart…Prof. Panarin, 50 years old, is not a fringe figure. A former KGB analyst, he is dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s academy for future diplomats…
When the going gets tough, he says, wealthier states will withhold funds from the federal government and effectively secede from the union. Social unrest up to and including a civil war will follow. The U.S. will then split along ethnic lines, and foreign powers will move in.
California will form the nucleus of what he calls “The Californian Republic,” and will be part of China or under Chinese influence. Texas will be the heart of “The Texas Republic,” a cluster of states that will go to Mexico or fall under Mexican influence. Washington, D.C., and New York will be part of an “Atlantic America” that may join the European Union… Hawaii, he suggests, will be a protectorate of Japan or China, and Alaska will be subsumed into Russia.
“It would be reasonable for Russia to lay claim to Alaska; it was part of the Russian Empire for a long time.” A framed satellite image of the Bering Strait that separates Alaska from Russia like a thread hangs from his office wall. “It’s not there for no reason,” he says with a sly grin. (Osborn A. As if Things Weren’t Bad Enough, Russian Professor Predicts End of U.S. Wall Street Journal, Dec 29, 2008 http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123051100709638419.html).
Now, although the Russian is not specifically predicting an attack on the USA, notice that Igor Panarin believes that USA economic issues will likely cause it to be divided up. How he believes that the USA will be divided up is, though somewhat inaccurate, interesting none-the-less. The idea of the USA being divided up is biblically supported (e.g. Daniel 11:39, for more for details, see Will the Anglo-Saxon Nations be Divided and Have People Taken as Slaves?), and this idea apparently is starting to have a little support among certain internationalists.
Because of military and political considerations, the European King of the North might be inclined to give Russia all or parts of Alaska as well as possibly parts of Canada, as well as some people from those lands.
Europe will likely believe this will cause peace and improve trade with Russia. And that is likely (cf. Revelation 18). Russia may also be interested in the British Antarctic Territory, and perhaps may be granted that someday.
Later, however, Russia will split from Europe, and prophetically lead a force to attack it. Notice the following:
50:41 “Behold, a people shall come from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Shall be raised up from the ends of the earth.
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance;
They are cruel and shall not show mercy.
Their voice shall roar like the sea;
They shall ride on horses,
Set in array, like a man for the battle,
Against you, O daughter of Babylon.43 “The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands grow feeble;
Anguish has taken hold of him,
Pangs as of a woman in childbirth…”(Jeremiah 50:41-43).44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him (Daniel 11:44-45).
A power from the north (Russia) will lead an Asian (eastern) confederation that will come against the end time daughter of Babylon (Europe), also referred to as ‘him’ in Daniel 11:44.
What does any of this have to do with a possible Brexit?
Well, biblical prophecy will be fulfilled and a Brexit may well accelerate end time prophetic events.
No matter how the UK votes this month, a split between the EU and UK is coming. And Russia likely feels this will be a good thing.
