12/31/08 p.m. LCG reported the following news item:
The Public View of Homosexual Rights: A Turning Tide? When California, Florida and, more recently, Arizona approved the banning of homosexual marriage, homosexual activists lamented. However, a recent Newsweek poll found that “Americans continue to find civil unions for gays and lesbians more palatable than full-fledged marriage. Fifty-five percent of respondents favored legally sanctioned unions or partnerships, while only 39 percent supported marriage rights. Both figures are notably higher than in 2004, when 40 percent backed the former and 33 percent approved of the latter. When it comes to according legal rights in specific areas to gays, the public is even more supportive.” Interestingly, two-thirds of those who view homosexual marriage as a “legal” matter support it; and two-thirds of those who see homosexual marriage as a “religious” matter oppose it. Additionally, more in the younger generations support homosexual marriage than do those in the older generations. All of this is especially interesting given an incoming President who supports much of the homosexual agenda (Newsweek, December 5, 2008). As the Israelite-descended nations increasingly move further away from fearing God, is it any wonder that they will become increasingly more accepting of ways of life that the Bible condemns? God warned that “in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves… proud… unholy… without self-control… despisers of good… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:1-4). God also warned that the concepts of good and evil would be turned upside down (Isaiah 5:20). Our society today increasingly reflects these dire warnings.—

12/28/08 a.m. Here is the latest update from Dr. Winnail. In it, he mentions executive meetings, updates from Barbados/Florida/South America/East Africa, income, world news items, and Christian moderation.
Here is the comment on Christian moderation:
Christian Moderation: Jesus taught His disciples that they should be “lights” to the world (Matthew 5:14-16). During the world’s mad scramble of holiday shopping and year-end parties, Christians have an opportunity to set a very different example. The Bible warns against over-indulgence in food (Proverbs 23:1-3, 20-21; 25:16, 27). It also warns about the dangers of liberal alcohol consumption (Proverbs 20:1; 1 Timothy 3:8; Titus 2:3). The Scriptures encourage Christians to set an example of moderation and balance in all things to everyone with whom they come into contact. “Let your moderation be known to all men” (Philippians 4:5, KJV; see also 1 Timothy 3:2, 7-8). As the world goes its deceived merry way during the year-end holidays, let’s be thankful for the Truth about the real purpose of life and the guidelines that God has provided to enable His servants to be balanced lights of Christian moderation to a darkened and confused world.

Here is one of the world news items:
Big Brother May Be Watching. In Britain,“Since April 1, hundreds of thousands of State employees, from police to teachers, youth and nursery workers, social workers and sports coaches, have been entitled to interrogate children aged up to 19, using the ‘Common Assessment Framework’ (CAF)… [an] eight-page, 60-section questionnaire.” Children, ages 12 and up, can agree to the framework, even if parents do not. “CAF includes eyewateringly intimate questions about children’s sexual behaviour, their family’s structure, culture and religion, their views on ‘discrimination’, their friends, secret fears, feelings and family income, plus ‘any serious difficulties in their parents’ relationship’.” Data will be stored in a central government data base. The Every Child Matters project, behind the assessment framework, “claims that nearly half of Britain’s 11 million children have ‘additional needs’, so must continuously be assessed for the [government’s] giant database...” Personal family information will apparently help the government better meet children’s needs than can their own families. According to the Daily Mail, “The Government’s decreed desirable ‘outcomes’ for children are so frighteningly broad that many decent parents could find themselves labeled failures or abusers.” A Huddersfield University professor recently warned regarding the new legislation, “What we are witnessing is the emergence of the ‘preventive-surveillance state’, with ‘major implications for the civil liberties and human rights of the citizen, particularly for children and parents” (Daily Mail, December 7, 2008). God warned of a future when the Israelite-descended nations would face unprecedented cursings for rejecting Him. He noted that “You shall beget sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours; for they shall go into captivity” (Deuteronomy 28:41). The recent creation of this state database may be one more way in which God’s prophesied cursings will come on Israel.

Zimbabwe’s nightmare … a lesson for us
Not too many years ago, Zimbabwe was a flourishing nation and a net food exporter. In the capital of Harare, educated businessmen and businesswomen sent their children to private schools. The government was stable. Crime was low. People had hope. Zimbabwe’s cities were similar in size and infrastructure to cities in Europe and America.
Today, however, Zimbabwe is falling into chaos. Its cities and towns are becoming strewn with refuse, violence is skyrocketing and schools and hospitals are abandoned. The military is feared by the local population which reports murders, abductions, and imprisonment for possessing foreign currency (BBCNews, December 10, 2008). Half-dead cholera victims wander the streets – victims of unsanitary drinking water, the result of an economic and an infrastructure breakdown. Click here to read more.

Good friends are precious, and a Christian should have many good friends. Often what is most cherished in someone’s life will ultimately not be ones possessions or physical accomplishments, but will be the good friends one has made.
In the summer of 1811, aged, ill, and reflecting upon his own life, Thomas Jefferson wrote to one of his good friends. He was very thankful for their friendship. He wrote in his letter, “I find friendship to be like wine, raw when new, ripened with age, the true old man’s milk and restorative cordial.”
Jefferson understood that friendship is good. It is strengthening and healing. It grows stronger and better over time. Good friendship is also very important to God. He wants us to become His friends, and has shown us how.
Jesus said that if we do whatever He commands, then we are not servants (or “slaves”), but we are His friends, and we have a special relationship with Him (John 15:14-15). Click here to read more.

Culture Clash Coming in Europe. “Europe is heading towards a major cultural clash with an ever-growing Muslim population that does not want to adopt European culture, former Mossad chief Ephraim Halevy said Monday… [Mr. Halevy continued] More and more we see that Muslims [living in Europe] are not interested in adapting to the local European culture but seek to live by their own way of life within the European framework.” Mr. Halevy added that by 2050, the nations in Europe as well as Russia could be 50% Muslim. And because of Muslims’ refusal to integrate, they will impact society and politics in a major way (Jerusalem Post, December 1, 2008). Daniel 11 describes a struggle between the kings of the North and South, which Muslim immigration may impact. Additionally, God warned the Israelite-descended nations (many of whom exist as European nations) that, because of their disobedience, “those who hate you shall reign over you” (Leviticus 26:17). God also warned that “the alien who is among you will rise higher and higher…” (Deuteronomy 28:43). Here are his comments on mistakes:
We all make mistakes, but we often cover them with excuses. Perhaps we didn’t consider our mistakes to be too serious. Perhaps we misunderstood what we were supposed to be doing. Oftentimes we justify ourselves by putting the blame on someone else. Such reasoning pleases the carnal mind. Blaming others for our own shortcomings is very easy and tempting. We do it at home, we do it at work, we do it in public life, and we sometimes even do it in the Church.
This tendency began with Adam and Eve. Adam blamed Eve, and she blamed the serpent who, actually, is the accuser of God’s people (Revelation 20:10). Throughout the Bible, we can find many such examples. For instance, when Aaron was confronted by Moses for allowing the Israelites to build the golden calf, he put the blame on the people (Exodus 32:22). When King Saul disobeyed God’s order to annihilate the Amalekites, he justified himself by shifting the blame to those under him (1 Samuel 15:21). Esau did not take responsibility for having lost his birthright blessing (Genesis 27:41).
As the end of this age approaches, Satan’s influence is becoming stronger. We must resist him. Instead of blaming each other, we need to grow closer and closer to God. As brethren in Christ, we must work together, hand in hand, without looking for excuses to cover our shortcomings or justifying ourselves. By so doing, we will continue to grow in grace and in knowledge, as the Apostle Peter exhorts us, under God’s inspiration (2 Peter 3:18).

You probably have heard by now through The World Ahead that Dr. Meredith has approved a four-week trial of our television program on CNBC (Europe). This is the European cable subsidiary of the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) of America. This is one of the three big networks in the U.S. Its European arm targets the top 20% of income-earners. The footprint covers all of Europe, as far as Russia and the former Soviet satellite countries; Israel and the Gulf States, as well as parts of North Africa. CNBC has a subscription base of 113 million homes, which translates to around 280 million possible viewers. According to Mr. Wayne Pyle, “this could be the biggest door that has ever opened to God’s Work in the end times…. This is not a religious channel, so we can expect to reach a far wider audience than the religious channels we are now on ….” As you can also imagine, we are going to need help with responses, so please pray that God will provide laborers in all of the languages that will respond. By using the English language on our program, we should be able to serve future subscribers with English-language literature.
At the same time, we have a new opportunity in South Africa with a channel called Channel G. This will cost the same as our present channel, with which we have had problems. It has pre-empted (that is overridden) our slot with sport whenever it suited them. Channel G’s viewing audience also has a greater scope.

The world has certainly entered a very dynamic period with the election of a new President in the United States, financial shockwaves surging around the world and now the major automakers in the USA facing bankruptcy, which could affect more than a million jobs. The “time of Jacob’s trouble” appears to be on the horizon.
And here is it last item:
Children Are their Oppressors. A major English newspaper reports, “There were more than 4,000 suspensions of children aged 5 and under in England last year… Of the 400 suspensions of children aged 2 and 3 from nursery last year, 310 involved accusations of physical assault or threatening behavior against a child or an adult, government figures show.” These children throw chairs, “bite, hit, and shout abuse at teachers.” The British Shadow Education Secretary commented, “[Government] Ministers have eroded teachers’ ability to keep order by restricting their powers to deal with disruptive and violent children.” The General Secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers observed, “Some of these children seem never to have heard the word no. It’s down to poor parenting” (The Times, November 7, 2008). In today’s society, too many children grow up not knowing their “boundaries” or how to follow the rules and submit to authority. They do not learn right from wrong and are not taught to share and treat others properly. Because parents themselves are not taught how to parent, because children are not taught properly by parents and grandparents (Deuteronomy 4:9, 40), and because the “whole head” of our governmental structures is “sick” (Isaiah 1:5) and fails to reinforce sound principles, we are experiencing the fulfillment of God’s end-time prophecy, “As for my people, children are their oppressors…” (Isaiah 3:12). We need to pray for the fulfillment of another Bible prophecy that tells of a time when the hearts of the fathers and children will turn to each other (Malachi 4:6). Imagine what THAT time will be like!
We are getting near the end of this age. And article discussing the time of Jacob's trouble would be Anglo - America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel.

In it, the Council of Elders' meeting was discussed, public Bible lectures were mentioned, succession plans were discussed, the fact that LCG now has over 300 congregations is mentioned, telecast records were mentioned, world news items were included, as were comments on working together.
Since some have asked about succession in LCG should Dr. Meredith be unable to continue as Presiding Evangelist, I thought that I would report here what he wrote about it:
One of the issues we discussed that the Council and I felt we needed to review with everyone was the procedure that has been in place in case the Presiding Evangelist becomes incapacitated through some infirmity or death or becomes disqualified to serve in the office. We addressed this issue because of questions that we have received. If the Presiding Evangelist appoints a successor, he will inform the Council of his decision and no further action will be required. In the absence of an appointed successor, the Council of Elders will convene, and after prayer and fasting, will seek God’s guidance to discern who He wants to be the successor to the Presiding Evangelist—based on the fruits of God’s Spirit that are obvious in the life of the person designated to be the next Presiding Evangelist.
Hopefully, this answers peoples' questions. The above is the way I had long understood LCG would handle this.
Here is one of the more shocking world news items:
Homosexual Rampage at Michigan Church. “Worshippers at a Bible-teaching [Protestant] church in Lansing, Mich., were stunned Sunday [November 9] when members of a pro-homosexual, pro-anarchy organization named Bash Back interrupted their service to fling propaganda and… [prophylactics] around the sanctuary, drape a profane banner from the balcony and feature two lesbians making out at the pulpit.” One town newspaper was contacted ahead of time and provided a reporter, but chose not to notify the church of the demonstration. Members of the gay activist group marched down aisles shouting profanities. They pushed and shoved church members in attempt to get them to “push back.” The demonstration quickly broke up when the sheriff arrived. A statement on Bash Back’s website read, after the event, “Let it be known: So long as bigots kill us in the streets, this pack of wolves will continue to BASH BACK!” (WorldNetDaily.com, November 11, 2008). Difficult times are coming for those who hold fast to God’s teachings. God warned the modern Israelite-descended nations, “The way of peace they have not known, and there is no justice in their ways; they have made themselves crooked paths; whoever takes that way shall not know peace” (Isaiah 59:1-8). However, there is a way to peace, and that way is spelled out in the laws of God (Psalm 119:165).

Here are the comments related to Christian fellowship:
The Key to Christian Fellowship: Fellowship involves communication, companionship, participation and the mutual sharing of common interests and activities. The Bible reveals that the foundation of our fellowship in God’s Church involves our common belief in the Gospel preached by Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:5; Mark 1:14-15), repenting, receiving and using God’s Spirit (Philippians 2:1) and sharing the trials and sufferings experienced by Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:10). Our fellowship also includes participation in the activities of the Church as fellow workers (Colossians 4:11), fellow servants (Colossians 1:7; 4:7) and fellow soldiers (Philippians 2:25). However, the real key to fellowship in the Church of God means having “no fellowship” with the unfruitful ways of this world (Ephesians 5:11), and developing a closer relationship with God, with Jesus Christ and with each other (1 John 1:3, 6, 7). God’s weekly Sabbath is designed to make this possible.

Here is the part on God's plan:
God’s Great Plan on Earth: Many professing Christians assume that God’s purpose is simply to get people to believe in Jesus so they can go to heaven. However, the Scriptures and the history of the early Church reveal something quite different! God told Isaiah, “My counsel [plan, purpose] shall stand” (Isaiah 46:10). The Apostle Paul proclaimed the “whole counsel [plan, purpose] of God” during his ministry (Acts 20:27). Paul also explained that Christians are called to be part of God’s great plan, “being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel [plan, purpose] of His will” (Ephesians 1:3-11). Paul reveals that this “eternal purpose” is a “mystery” that has been “hidden” from this world, but has been revealed to God’s Church (Ephesians 3:8-11). The plan of God is outlined in the biblical Holy Days that we are commanded to observe every year to help us remember God’s great plan of salvation for all mankind. We must never forget that it is God’s Spirit that enables Christians to understand His plan and purpose (see John 14:15-17, 26; 16:13; 1 Corinthians 2), and that God gives His Spirit to those who obey Him (Acts 5:32). Let’s rejoice, be thankful and nourish that Spirit during the coming year so we can grow and be ready to rule with Jesus Christ to usher in the coming Kingdom of God.

Tired of politics? Sick of the political commercials attacking the other candidate or party? Had enough of the sarcasm, innuendo, half truths and spin? Fed up with the endless analysis by the talking heads on the networks and cable channels? You are not alone! What does the future hold for the United States’ space program? Will our children and grandchildren explore planets and moons beyond our solar system? The answer may surprise you...
Budget constraints are now forcing NASA to plan more than 8000 job cuts and retire its aging space shuttle fleet years before the agency has an alternate transport vehicle in place. So, how do we intend to put astronauts and payload into space?
Planners now intend to rely “entirely upon Russian Soyuz capsules and rockets to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station for half a decade.” Director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University noted, “It is our fault for not having a replacement for the shuttle much earlier than Orion will be available. It puts Russia in a very powerful position” (CNN.com, August 14, 2008).
What an embarrassment for the once-mighty US space program! And, how long can we depend on friendly support from Russia, China or others to transport our astronauts and our payloads into space? Click here to read more.
It may even be more embarrassing than that. The reality is that the EU is launching its own alternative to the US GPS system (called Galileo) and with its Large Hadron Collider, Europe and not the USA will become predominant in space prior to the mid-21st century.

The harsh reality is that the financial crisis capturing today’s worldwide headlines will seem irrelevant in the years ahead if there is not a massive change in global precipitation.
In many places, the earth is suffering from severe drought that is unprecedented in modern history. And while most people in “wealthy nations” fail to understand the severity, food prices are already noticeably rising because of this very real crisis. From Italy to China to New Zealand, global drought is a dire problem, but a quick review of just four regions will paint the desperate picture.
Australia: Seven years into an “epic drought,” Australia is suffering catastrophic environmental damage...
Israel: The Sea of Galilee (which provides 27% of Israel’s water) and Israel’s coastal and mountain aquifers (each providing 20%) are at crisis levels and getting worse (IsraelNationalNews.com, July 3, 2008)...
Argentina: This summer, Argentina saw more than 700,000 livestock and vast amounts of crops perish from severe drought (Mercopress, October 7, 2008)...

10/08/08 a.m. Last night, LCG's Richard Ames reported:
Tuesday is the day the Executive Team usually has lunch with Dr. Meredith in his office to discuss Church business and to update him on various projects.
Even though he is still recovering from his recent stroke, he was able to come in to the office for the luncheon today and conduct our meeting. Dr. Meredith was in good spirits and enjoyed hearing what has been going on in his absence, while offering his guidance and comments on the various reports that were presented. He did ask that we continue to pray for his complete recovery, since his progress is going much slower than he would like. His mental acuity is fine, but he is physically weak, and becomes fatigued easily. He is eager to get back to work and to serve with full vigor at the helm of the Church.
In the meantime, the Work is going well, with outstanding responses to the Tomorrow’s World television program. We can also report increased attendance in the USA and Canada, but attendance figures are incomplete for other international areas at this writing.
Encouragingly, even in this uncertain economic climate, God’s people have responded to the needs of His Work, and as a result we are slightly ahead of budget for the Holy Day offering for Trumpets and regular income, year to date.
Have a wonderful Day of Atonement and an inspiring and bountiful Feast of Tabernacles.

World leaders have often been at odds with the USA lately, but as America continues to be the epicenter of a global financial meltdown, the language is becoming increasingly hostile...and prophetically meaningful. In it, he mentions the Feast of Trumpets, Atonement, Dr. Winnail in the Caribbean, a Canadian update, a public Bible lecture in Haiti, GOTS, public lectures, world news items, and how the Feast of Trumpets could be called the Feast of Overcomers.
Here is one of the world news items:
Pride of Your Power Will Be Broken. “The US will lose its status as the superpower of the world financial system. This world will become multipolar” with the emergence of stronger, better capitalized centers in Asia and Europe, Mr. Steinbrück (the German Finance Minister) told the German parliament. “The world will never be the same again” (The Financial Times, September 25, 2008). “‘Absurd, absurd, absurd,’ said one German diplomat [following President Bush’s recent address to the UN General Assembly]. A French woman called him ‘yesterday’s man’ over coffee… There is another way to put it, too: Bush was a laughing stock in the gray corridors of the UN... But the ridicule was a new thing. It marked the end of respect… A new America is on display, a country that no longer trusts its old values and its elites even less: the politicians, who failed to see the problems on the horizon, and the economic leaders, who tried to sell a fictitious world of prosperity to Americans… The Americans are now paying the price for their pride” (Der Spiegel, September 30, 2008). In the wake of the U.S.-induced global financial crisis and other powerful geopolitics, the above comments ring powerfully of God’s warning to the Israelite-descended nations. Addressing the result of Israel turning their back on God, He warned, “I will break the pride of your power…” (Leviticus 26:19). We are now witnessing the powerful reality of this sobering prophecy develop.

Commentary: A gentle bull?
Buried in the British press this week, amongst the stories of the global financial tsunami, comes one of a new ID card that is being stealthily introduced. It has all the makings of yet one more directive from Brussels to the British government. What does it portend for an uninformed British public? Will it be another step toward a totalitarian European federal super-state?
The British public is still mainly oblivious to what Brussels is up to. The ID card is being issued initially to some non-British citizens who want to stay in the country. Home Affairs minister Jacqui Smith has played down the fact that there is no Union Jack or recognizable British icon other than the coat of arms to be found. There is, however, a symbol used that is being seen more and more on European Union documents.
What is the symbol and what does it mean?
The motif of a bull moving forward amidst five stars of the European Union harks back to the ancient Greek myth of Europa. This romantic story has it that a lovely young Phoenician princess is seduced by Zeus, who has manifested himself as a bull. “Uncommonly gentle, the bull inspired no fear. Decking its horns with flowers, Europa climbed upon its back, whereupon the bull – Zeus – took off at a trot and dived into the sea.” (European Union Law, Chalmers et al., Cambridge University Press, page vii). Here is some of what Dr. Meredith wrote in the update:
Thank you all again for your prayers, encouragement and support during this time of recuperation from my stroke. I deeply appreciate the various letters and cards I am beginning to receive, and I am so thankful that God’s people are so loyal and enthusiastic about the Work. For we have a fine team of dedicated men and women here at HQ and around the world to carry on the Work. So, with or without me, Christ’s Work will continue as we sincerely strive to obey Him and walk with Him...
I will continue to try to “push” myself as best I can, and I hope all of us will do this in the right way so that we may let God know where we truly stand. May He continue to guide and bless each of you as you walk with Him. I deeply thank you for your response and for your prayers and support. May God bless and guide you and the entire Church over this coming Holy Day season.

09/24/08 a.m. LCG's Dr. Meredith reported:
Dear Fellow Ministers and Brethren,
I want you all to know that I suffered a mild stoke this past Friday night, September 19. I decided to have my son and my wife take me to the hospital as I was feeling unbalanced and my left leg felt wobbly.
After an extensive series of tests, and a MRI, the neurosurgeons said that I had suffered a “mild stroke,” but should be okay within a few weeks. But everyone said I should “take it easy” for a few months, and not push myself as I am used to doing. And we are concerned that I may not be able to preach for a few months—though I hope to go to the Feast and at least make a few announcements. I know that God is in charge and that He will be with me if I do my part.
So, brethren, I will really appreciate your prayers. My wife is much better and your prayers for her have been heard! However, please do not send me any flowers as I would rather you use any extra money to increase your offerings for the Work of Christ. Many new “doors” to preach the Gospel are now opening and I hope with all my heart that all of us will increase our offerings this fall Holy Day season. Let us all be generous with the Work of God and—in every way—follow the Apostle Paul’s instruction, “press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:14).
Thank you, brethren, in advance, for your prayers and for your part in the very Work of our Savior and living Head—Jesus Christ! We must always remember that this is His Work, not ours. And in spite of all these trials and tests along the way, in the end, “We win!” May God bless you and inspire you as you prepare for His Holy Days!
With Christian love,
Roderick C. Meredith
When Dr. Meredith and I spoke late on Friday, we discussed the mini-stroke, and it was officially diagnosed a bit later by the MDs. He should recover fine. I also spoke to Richard Ames on this two days ago as well.
Additionally, I should also add that later Dr. Meredith also wrote the following:
I am sure that I will be fit for service in a week or two or three.
However, in the mean time, after consulting with the Council of Elders and Board I am designating Mr. Richard Ames as acting CEO. He should make all necessary decisions in the operation of the office and the Work as a whole—in consultation with Messrs. Winnail, Apartian, Crockett and others. I ask all of you to give him your full support and prayers.
For more details, visit the COG News page. I am not expecting any major issues with the fact that Dr. Meredith is recovering and will probably simply be taking a few weeks off.

Commentary: Have we learned the wrong lessons from 9/11?
Another September 11 anniversary has come and gone. It is a day when our country cannot help but recall the horrific attack we suffered seven years ago. As we all surrounded our television screens watching smoke pouring out of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon in attacks that eventually cost some 3,000 lives, we came to the realization that something had changed. Click here to read more.
On other matters, I would like to make a few comments indirectly related to yesterday's post about Sheryl Meredith.
Over the years I have had communications with some who were part of the late Herbert W. Armstrong's entourage. Because of his travels and his advancing age, Herbert W. Armstrong had and needed a fair amount of people assisting him in his travels. After he died, his "successor" Joseph Tkach, Sr. had an entourage of his own.
Over 13 years ago, I was invited by Joseph Tkach, Sr. to meet with him in his Pasadena home (which presumably was owned then by the WCG). He, too, had an entourage, but it was not that clear to me why he needed one as he was not as aged as Herbert W. Armstrong had been, nor was he traveling and necessarily needing one. The entourage seemed to be a bit pretentious to me.
This contrasts with my first meeting with Dr. and Mrs. Meredith. We met them at the Feast of Tabernacles in Fiji nearly two decades ago. They were unpretentious. About a year after my meeting with Joseph Tkach, I ran into Roderick Meredith at a GCG church service in Southern California.
As GCG president, he had no entourage--but most of the time I met him at some type of church service, his wife Sheryl was with him. And his lack of an entourage has been true all the times that I have met with him since (though a few of those times I was in meetings with him and several of the other LCG evangelists some of times I have met with him in Charlotte, NC). Dr. and Mrs. Meredith both have always been friendly and willing to help the work.
Because Dr. Meredith has a high priority on proclaiming the gospel and is cautious about spending the tithes that LCG receives, he simply does not spend them to have an entourage around him. But that does not mean that at 78 years of age he does not ever need any assistance. But he does have assistance, and that is his wife Sheryl.
Sheryl Meredith has tended to mainly work behind the scenes at both the old GCG and the current LCG. And while she does not go to work in Charlotte everyday like her husband does, she does meet with many who do visit Charlotte. And when Dr. Meredith needs to travel (which is relatively frequently) she is his "entourage". She helps take care of many of the details that are necessary for this portion of LCG to work (and other portions as well).
Sheryl Meredith has a more vital part in the work of LCG than most people probably realize. And as Dr. Meredith announced (see post below), she needs our prayers now.
09/11/08 a.m. Dr. Meredith announced:
Dear fellow servants at Headquarters,
I want to tell you that my wife, Sheryl, has come down again with breast cancer. She has been checked and diagnosed thoroughly and an operation is scheduled for this Friday at 2:00 pm. We do not know the extent the surgery will take, but will ask all of you to pray that God would heal her ahead of time—according to His will—or at the very least guide the hands of the surgeon and protect her life through the operation. I love her and need her very much and will deeply appreciate your prayers for her in every way at this time. It is certainly okay to tell others about it now—as everyone’s prayers will be deeply appreciated. Thank you very much.

Here is one of the world news items:
Strong Words from Russia. European leaders met Monday to decide on their future relationship with Russia. The meeting adjourned with member states suspending future meetings with Russia until it pulls out of Georgia. In reaction to the meeting, Russia issued a number of deep-meaning comments. “The EU is not in a position to throw Russia out of anywhere,” Russia’s ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, told Reuters, describing any attempt to isolate Russia as “short-sighted and unrealistic” (EU Observer, September 1, 2008). “Russia does not want confrontation with any country. Russia does not plan to isolate itself,” Russian President Medvedev stated on Sunday. He also added: “Everyone should understand that if someone launches an aggressive sortie, he will receive a response” (Reuters, August 31, 2008). Currently, the EU is hastily reexamining its energy policies, as Russia has intimated cutting off oil and gas to Europe if the EU imposes sanctions. Europe currently depends on Russia for 25% of its energy, and this is forecast to increase to nearly 75% by 2020 (Daily Telegraph, September 1, 2008). Both Russia and Europe continue to point fingers. Each says it is “up to” the other to avoid another cold war (Associated Press, September 1, 2008). Bible prophecy indicates that a Beast power will rise in Europe, yet Europe has had great difficulty uniting, as do iron and clay (Daniel 2:33-35). Will God use pressure from Russia to aid in the creation of a stronger, more unified Europe?
I do believe that the Russian actions will move Europe to strengthen its military.

Increase in Global Grain Demand. Rice is the most political grain in the world! “2008 has seen a remarkable level of turbulence and chaos resulting from rice demand. Thailand was the stage for a surreal scene where armed guards marched along with combines harvesting rice. In the Philippines, heavy prison sentences were mandated for anyone caught hoarding rice. In Haiti, the prime minister was removed following protests due to high rice prices.” Rice will always be a staple in poorer nations. To put things in perspective, China could deplete the entire annual U.S. rice supply in 3.5 weeks. Interestingly, as poor nations move forward economically, they are converting fertile farm land to cattle grazing land. China has already converted seven million acres from farmland to cattle and poultry land this year… and farm animals consume the grain too (Delta Farm Press [Nebraska, USA], August 22, 2008). God warned that, at the end of the age, global famines and other circumstances would lead to hyperinflation of grains! In fact, there will come a point that one day’s supply of grain will cost a family an entire day’s wages (Revelation 6:5-6). Grain forecasters predict that grain costs will continue to rise worldwide, including the politically-important grain: RICE.

Urgent Prayer Request—Violence in the Philippines
For some time, the Armed Forces of the Philippines have been in conflict with Muslim breakaway factions in the south, on the island of Mindanao. When a recent peace accord with the government fell through, Muslim militants attacked communities they deemed pro-Christian. Some of our brethren live within these localities. Mr. Gideon Benitez, our Area Pastor in central and northwestern Mindanao (Philippines), described their experience on the evening of August 19:
“While we were talking outside the house at 8:30 in the evening with our Muslim neighbors, we heard shouts along the streets followed by women running, carrying their children, babies and bags. According to them, Iligan City was under [attack] by MILF, just a few kilometers from our compound and heavy fights were going on and, suddenly, the lights on the streets were off and people started screaming [...] Our Muslim neighbors left our discussions and prepared themselves for eventualities because they did not know where to go. We immediately went inside our house and closed the doors and windows for our protection. After an hour, the City Mayor spoke on the radio asking the people to calm down, stay at home, not to panic, for the city of Iligan is surrounded with four Battalions of Philippine Army with six military tanks for assaults [...] Today, Iligan City is full of military personnel on patrol on the streets, city exits, entrances and in big government installations, and heavy guards on check points. All classes are suspended and city government offices are closed. The whole city is under [threat]. Yesterday establishments were already closed at 5 pm and very few people can be seen on the streets, even in big supermarkets. So far the brethren are not affected nor were they harmed by the on-going fights. All are safe and sound, but please don’t forget to include us in your prayers.”
Your urgent prayers are requested for our brethren around Iligan City and other parts of Mindanao affected by the recent fighting. Please also pray that brethren in Mindanao will be able to keep the Feast in peace and safety.

California’s Drought and Prophecy. California’s Department of Water Resources Director, Lester Snow, recently commented, “…the state will end its water year [October 1] at 58 percent below normal precipitation, but more disturbing is that we will end the year with the lowest water carryover in four decades.” But, forty years ago, the state and world population was markedly lower, as was the overall water demand. Mr. Snow also noted, “2008 is a disaster, but 2009 could be the worst drought in California history…. The resulting impact will affect consumers across the country.” Mr. Snow also warned, “failure to respond to this water crisis puts more than $400 billion in direct support for the state’s economy in jeopardy.” The region’s unemployment rate is currently 30% and is expected to climb at the end of harvest season (California Farm Bureau Federation, July 32, 2008). As homes and business fight with farmers for water rights, forecasters predict water rationing on farms for the first time since the Great Depression (San Diego Union Tribune, August 4, 2008). God warned that because Israel rejects Him, their heavens will become like iron and their earth like bronze, and the land will not yield its produce (Leviticus 26:19-20). God also warned of a time when “we pay for the water we drink, and our wood comes at a price…. We have given our hand to the Egyptians and the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread…. because of the fever of famine” (Lamentations 5:4-6, 10). Difficult times are coming. Prophecies that many simply do not know exist are being fulfilled.

The Russian Bear Is on the Move Again. The Russian economy is booming, thanks to oil and gas, and Russia is investing heavily abroad. Russian firms now own stock in Air Berlin airline, shipyards in the Baltic ports of Wismar and Rostock, and even in Deutsche Bank. This year, some 1,300 Russian firms will do business in Germany—to the tune of nearly 200 billion Euros (Deutsche Welle, August 6, 2008). Due to an abundance of funds, Russia is also making her weight felt on the world scene. Now, because the Georgian government is interested in joining NATO, the southern province of Ossetia wants to break and become a separate nation, and is seeking Russian help to do so. Russia, of course, does not want a former satellite nation to become a NATO member and has threatened to take action against Georgia to prevent this. For decades after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia was considered a “non-player” in geopolitics. But now, with her new-found wealth, Russia has emerged as a powerhouse and nations are paying attention to her moves—including Europe and the United States (TimesOnline, August 6, 2008). Russia is greatly updating its military capabilities, building alliances with large Asian nations like China and India, and is again acting independently of the West. Bible prophecy warns that at the end of the age, a great army will arise to challenge the European Beast power (Daniel 11:44-45, Revelation 9:13-19). We may be watching the beginnings of a future confrontation between Russia and her European counterparts.

Here are the comments on preparing for the future:
The Pope Moves “Back to the Future.” Nearly 40 years ago, the Catholic Church effectively banned the Latin Mass to make people feel more a part of the liturgy. In recent years, the Pope has made the Latin Mass an “option” for Catholic parishes. Now, the Latin Mass “is to be reintroduced into every Roman Catholic parish….” When asked if the Latin Mass would be celebrated in many parishes in the future, the Pope’s senior spokesman stated, “Not in many parishes, all parishes.” This move will achieve the Pope’s wish for the Latin Mass and the “revised” (modern-language) Mass to exist side by side (Sunday Telegraph, June 15, 2008). But how long will it be before the Latin Mass totally replaces the “side-by-side” Mass? The current Pope Benedict XVI is focused on returning the Catholic Church to a more conservative time—a time when the Pope had greater power and influence over the church as a whole, and Europe in general. The Scriptures reveal that at the time of the end harlot daughters will return to their mother church. In addition, this church will grow in power and influence on the world scene (see Revelation 17). The Pope and his Vatican counselors are preparing the Roman church for a much greater role in the future (v. 18). Reinstituting the Latin Mass will force people to worship under the church’s power, while they are kept ignorant by not understanding the church’s teachings.

“Your Highways Shall Be Desolate…” Though the New Zealand dollar has been riding very high in recent years, economists predict an impending “dive” in the value of the currency, due mostly to inevitable reductions in domestic interest rates. New Zealand enjoys some of the highest and most stable interest rates in the world, but as their Reserve Bank cuts rates, what was seen as a “safe” currency may turn into a currency that nations flee away from, causing a major drop in the value of the NZ dollar (Money and Markets, July 12, 2008). One conservative U.S. economist, after examining a broad array of geopolitics, is predicting that when gasoline reaches $7 per gallon in the U.S., a family earning less than $25,000 per year will spend 20% of its income for gasoline. Mr. Broderick notes: “For some people, it simply won’t be worth it to drive to work. Factor in the airlines parking planes, delivery trucks no longer running, fishing fleets staying in port, and car manufacturers going out of business… America has the ingredients for a major economic collapse” (Money and Markets, July 2, 2008). God predicted major inflation at the end of the age as grains, cooking oil and wine become unaffordable to most (Revelation 6:5-6). He also warned of an economic collapse that results in the highways of Israel becoming “desolate” (Leviticus 26:22). Even economists are beginning to use biblical terminology to refer to the anticipated results of future economic turmoil.

Women and Children Rule Over You. “Quebec, Canada: After his 12-year-old daughter posted photos of herself on an online dating service, one Canadian father chose to ban his daughter from using the Internet. Then, after a related altercation with her step mother, the father prohibited his daughter from going on a school field trip. So… the daughter took her father to court and sued him. Thus, in this landmark decision, Justice Suzanne Tessier of the provincial superior court ruled that the father had dealt out ‘excessive punishment’ to his daughter and ruled in favor of the daughter. Even though the field trip was already completed at the time of the ruling, the court set a precedent by becoming involved in the internal affairs of family discipline. The father is appealing the case in order to prevent such an odd ruling from happening again in the future” (Globe and Mail, June 19, 2008). What perverted judgments will this case make way for in the future? God warned Israel and her descended nations of impending national difficulty because of rejecting His ways: “As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths” (Isaiah 3:12).

Mr. Simon Muthama, our elder serving in Kenya and in Tanzania, reports: “I returned home last night from an uplifting trip to western Kenya, where I visited 32 men and women. They had written a letter to Dr. Meredith requesting a visit. This group is in Migori, about 420 km from Nairobi and 100 km from Kisii town, near the border of Kenya and Tanzania. From Migori town to where they meet for Sabbath services are about 15 km towards Lake Victoria. On my arrival at Migori, I found… the group leader waiting for me…. Through our Official Statement of Fundamental Beliefs, which they downloaded from our website, they were convinced that we are teaching the true gospel which they had at WCG, and especially Church government. From Migori, I went to catch up with the Ndhiwa group for Sabbath services. We were 32 brethren in attendance. From Ndhiwa I travelled back home to Nairobi.”
Situation in Papua New Guinea
Mr. Bruce Tyler, Australasia Regional Pastor, reports: “Here’s a bit of an update on the situation in Papua New Guinea as the world economic meltdown continues to gather pace. Warning signs for us in the West! Our local elder in Papua New Guinea just sent this to me a couple of days ago: ‘Our towns and cities are in a chaotic situation. Most of the vehicles are off the road. The people are using public transport to get to work and now the owners of the public transport have pulled them off the road. The situation is worse; most of the fuel service stations are closed because of no fuel due to rising cost of fuel. The police force cannot do its job due to fuel shortage. People have demanded Prime Minister Mr. Somare to find a way to urgently subsidize the cost of fuel. The food prices have skyrocketed also. The youths have formed gangs roaming the streets with bush knives, attacking innocent people; they break and enter into other people’s properties, plus business houses, it is just chaotic…. The good news is that our members are safe so far.’”
Myanmar Update
Mr. Rajan Moses reports on Mr. Thomas Tial Hoe’s visit to our brethren in Sakahn Gyi village last week: “I just telephoned Thomas Tial Hoe in Myaung Mya town. He left Yangon on Tuesday 1 July at 8:30 a.m. by bus. He arrived safely in Myaung Mya at 3:00 p.m. He said roads were very bad with big holes here and there. He saw many uprooted and fallen trees on the way. Upon arrival, the brethren were very happy to see him. They were very sad when Thomas informed them that I was not able to visit them. Thomas told me none of the brethren were affected by the cyclone. Only trees have fallen in between the brethren’s houses. Due to the price increase in oil, rice and other commodities, they face some financial difficulties. The money I gave him is sufficient for the next two months. I have also given a box of clothing for the brethren. He will be keeping the Sabbath in Sakahan Gyi village and will return home on Monday, 7 July, reaching Kalaymyo on 11 July. Thomas thanked the Church for the financial help and mentioned that the brethren’s houses need some repairs in Sakahan Gyi village.”
South Africa Update

Mr. Louis Bouwer has had visits with some eighteen new people (a few of whom are now attending). Five of these are near candidates for baptism, while three others are potential baptisms a little further into the future. Rajan Moses reports on his visit to Myanmar last week, “I arrived at Myanmar International Airport on Friday 27th June…. Upon arrival, I met Thomas Tial Hoe and he was very happy to see me. We took a private taxi to the Traders hotel, which is about 11 miles from the airport. On the way there, while talking to the taxi driver, we were told that it was possible for us to travel to Myaung Mya town and Sakhan Gyi village. We made arrangements with the driver to pick us up at the Traders hotel on Sunday 29th June to travel to Myaung Mya and back on Tuesday 1st July…. Thomas and I spent the Sabbath discussing world events and had a short Bible study and fellowship…. In the evening after the Sabbath I happened to see the Assistant Manager of the hotel and asked him if it was possible for us to go to Sakhan Gyi village. To our surprise, we were told that people who have a ‘tourist visa’ are not allowed to travel to cyclone-affected Ayeyawady areas. All who are under UNICEF, Red Cross, NGO organizations were allowed to travel. I hold a tourist visa and was told that I should apply for a special visa from the relevant authorities to travel to Sakhan Gyi village… but the locals are allowed to travel there. So Thomas will travel by bus on Tuesday morning [July 1] to Sakhan Gyi village.
“More than 134,000 people are feared dead, and more than 140,000 buffaloes, goats and chickens have perished in the cyclone. We were told that there are hundreds of decomposing bodies rotting, which are not completely cleared. Dengue fever has hit those areas. Uprooted trees can be seen everywhere in Yangon city and in the outskirts. It has been a devastating cyclone in the history of Myanmar…. [Thomas Tial Hoe] will spend a few days and the Sabbath in Sakhan Gyi and will return home next week. There are about 16 families (50 members, including children) in Sakhan Gyi village…. I will be calling Thomas and Mrs. Saw Lay Beh in Myaung Mya on Friday morning and will find out how things are going there…. It has been a sobering experience for me to hear the stories of the storm-hit areas.”
