Sometimes known as the Batican, this is where many of the popes were prior to the current location in the Vatican. The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano (Basilica of St. John Lateran) is the official ecclesiastical seat of the Bishop of Rome that contains the Cathedra Romana (papal throne).
