VOA: ‘Americans Think God Made Us Great’

Voice of America (VOA) reported the following today:

Americans Think God Made Us Great

July 8, 2015

Six in 10 agree with the notion that God has granted America a special role in human history.

“Fundamentally, if there is one thing that has been traditionally what makes America unique in the world, it’s this idea that we as Americans have a special relationship with God,” said Dan Cox, research director at the Public Religion Research Institute, which studied the subject, “that we are supposed to make a difference, that we are sort of first among equals in the world and it goes back to the pilgrims really.”

The pilgrims came to North America from England in 1620 to avoid religious persecution and established a colony in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. The pilgrims are credited with leading the way in establishing religious freedom and laying the foundations of American democracy.

John Winthrop, first governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony, delivered a sermon declaring that his fellow settlers must establish a “city on the hill”. This notion of being a beacon of light suggests that the American colonists and the people who followed them were uniquely blessed by God to establish a society that would better all humankind. …

However, not all Americans are on board with the the notion that the United States is inherently unique or exceptional when compared to other countries. One-third do not believe a higher being has given America a special role in human history.

Not surprisingly, religious people are far more likely to believe in American exceptionalism than people who consider themselves to be religiously unaffiliated. Although many Americans are correct that God made the USA great, they really do not know the scriptures why. The most direct scriptures for that point probably are the following:

14 Then Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn. 15 And he blessed Joseph, and said:

“God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has fed me all my life long to this day, 16 The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil, Bless the lads; Let my name be named upon them, And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”

17 Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. 18 And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.” (Genesis 48:14-19)

Notice that the Bible teaches that the descendants of Ephraim (UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) and Manasseh (USA) would be great.

Blessings were promised first.

But cursings were also warned about if they did not obey God’s laws:

14’But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, 15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, 16 I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 I will set My face against you, and you shall be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you shall reign over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you (Leviticus 26:14-17).

Thus terrors (like terrorism) are prophesied for those who were blessed because of God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And these curses have began.

Americans should consider that if they believe that the God of the Bible made their nation great, how do they think God viewed the recent anti-biblical US Supreme Court decision on homosexual marriage (see US Supreme Court declares in favor of homosexual marriage, in spite of the Constitution), the past one on abortion (see Abortion, the Bible, and a Woman’s Right to Choose), decisions related to pornography (see Pornography: A scourge on society), and other anti-biblical views that many Americans now hold.

Americans often claim to read the Bible. They should thus consider that the Bible teaches;

48 For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required (Luke 12:48).

The U.S.A. and its Anglo-allies have been given much. Yet, the three “most sinful nations” according to a 2010 BBC report based on the classic ‘seven deadly sins’—lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride’— were Australia, the United States, and Canada (‘The Most Sinful Nation on Earth,’ February 2010, p. 30). The United Kingdom was 6th on that list. And while one can argue if other nations should be ahead of them on a sin-list, the reality is that the Anglo-Saxon nations promote a lot of sin. And they accept and promote more and more sin. While other nations also promote sin, the Bible shows that they will be dealt with AFTER the USA and its Anglo-Saxon allies are (Isaiah 10).

America which received blessings of greatness, is more and more going to experience the curses associated with promoting massive disobedience to God and His laws.
