Putin calls for cease-fire in Nagorno-Karabakh: a step toward Eurasian military unity?

Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a cease-fire between Azerbaijan and Armenia today related to Nagorno-Karabakh:

Azerbaijan and Armenia accused each other of starting the fighting, with both sides reporting casualties.

Here is some background about this:

The predominantly Armenian-populated region of Nagorno-Karabakh was claimed by both the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and the First Republic of Armenia when both countries became independent in 1918. After the Soviet Union established control over the area, it created the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) within the Azerbaijan SSR in 1923. In the final years of the Soviet Union, the region re-emerged as a source of dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In 1991, a referendum held in the NKAO and the neighbouring Shahumian region resulted in a declaration of independence. Large-scale ethnic conflict led to the 1991–1994 Nagorno-Karabakh War, which ended with a ceasefire that left the current borders.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is a presidential democracy with a unicameral parliament. The de facto country is very mountainous, averaging 1,097 metres (3,599 ft) above sea level. The population is predominantly Christian, most being affiliated with the Armenian Apostolic Church. Several historical monasteries are popular with tourists, mostly from the Armenian diaspora, as most travel can take place only between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. The basic reality is that the overwhelming majority in Nagorno-Karabakh are Armenian and either want to be fully part of Armenia or at least no longer subject to the Islamic-dominated government of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan wants to consider the area part of its nation, but those in Nagorno-Karabakh do not want to be. So much so, those there declared a separate country called the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Armenia itself is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, dominated by Russia. Russia’s President Putin would like to see Azerbaijan in the EAEU, but sees this conflict as a problem for unity.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic uses the currency of Armenia.

Perhaps Russia will one day be able to persuade Azerbaijan that it is not in its interest to try to control the region, and to come to peaceful terms in the area. But that may not happen for a time.

Now, the Bible tells of a time of a vast Eurasian confederation. This confederation will include Russia, China, and many of their allies.

The Bible shows that a Eurasian military union will happen involving those from the north AND the east and frighten the European King of the North:

…the king of the North… 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. 44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him (Dan 11:40,43-45).

Places like Armenia (called Ararat and Minni below) are prophesied to be involved with the Northern power (king of the Medes below):

27 Set up a banner in the land, Blow the trumpet among the nations! Prepare the nations against her, Call the kingdoms together against her: Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a general against her; Cause the horses to come up like the bristling locusts. 28 Prepare against her the nations, With the kings of the Medes, Its governors and all its rulers, All the land of his dominion. 29 And the land will tremble and sorrow; For every purpose of the Lord shall be performed against Babylon, To make the land of Babylon a desolation without inhabitant. (Jeremiah 51:27-29)

Armenia looks, therefore to play a role. The peoples of Azerbaijan also seem to be part of those lands listed above. Hence, both Armenia and Azerbaijan may be part of the final confederation of Eurasian nations.

The New Testament shows that a group of nations known as the Kings of the East will form:

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).

While most in the West pay little attention to places like Azerbaijan and Armenia, they seem to be prophesied to have a role in the end times.
