U.N. court rules in favor of the Philippines on the South China Sea, but China says it will ignore the decision
Many nations have military presence in the South China Sea
The U.N. arbitration court sided with the Philippines over China related to a dispute in the South China Sea:
July 12, 2016
In a landmark ruling, the U.N. arbitration court is dismissing China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea, saying it has “no historic title” to the vast maritime region.
Tuesday’s ruling by the Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration answers a complaint brought by the Philippines in 2013 that accused Beijing of violating the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) with its aggressive actions on the Scarborough Shoal, a reef located about 225 kilometers off the Philippine coast.
Chinese President Xi Jinping rejected the ruling and said “China’s territorial sovereignty and martime interests in the South China Sea” will not be affected.
The court said Beijing’s claim of virtual sovereignty over nearly all the South China Sea under a so-called “nine-dash line” runs contrary to UNCLOS, which sets a country’s maritime boundaries 22 kilometers from its coast, and control over economic activities up to 370 kilometers from its coast. The court ruled China had violated Manila’s sovereign rights by interfering with Philippine fishing and oil exploration activities in the area.
In Manila, Philippine Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay called the ruling “a milestone decision” in a press conference moments after the announcement. Yasay said the ruling makes “an important contribution” to resolving the ongoing maritime disputes, and urged all parties “to exercise restraint and sobriety.” New Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has called for bilateral negotiations to resolve the controversy.
U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby called the ruling “an important contribution to the shared goal of a peaceful resolution to disputes in the South China Sea.”
China had boycotted the proceedings at the court, saying the body has no jurisdiction over the dispute, and insists it will not accept, recognize or implement any ruling on the South China Sea, despite being a signatory to UNCLOS along with the Philippines. In a statement issued just hours before The Hague panel announced its decision, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry said it would not accept “any so-called material” from the court.
Chinese dissatisfaction
State media Xinhua and online netizens expressed strong dissatisfaction the ruling. A Weibo user said in his posting that “We should unite behind the country’s claim and make no concessions on the South China Sea dispute even if we have to go to war,” while another user said “China should show no fear for any future economic sanction” shall China decide not to comply with the order.
In its harsh-worded editorial, Xinhua even lambasted the international arbitration court to be “the source of chaos.”
Meanwhile, the ruling is coming in the way of the two-day EU-China bilateral talks, which began in Beijing on Tuesday. The EU advised China to stick to rules and abide by the ruling. German think tank, Mecator, said the EU would never grant China’s request for a Market Economy Status if Beijing defies the court decision.
An estimated $5 trillion in global trade passes each year through the South China Sea, which is home to rich fishing grounds and a potentially vast wealth of oil, gas and other natural resources.
About 100 demonstrators marched outside the Chinese consulate in Manila, calling on Beijing to relinquish the Scarborough Shoal, shouting “Chexit Now” – a play on the term coined for Britain’s controversial push to leave the European Union. http://www.voanews.com/content/article/3413156.html

China’s decision to claim it will not abide by the ruling here is no surprise. Last month, China said it would not abide by the decision of this U.N. court (see China refuses to accept U.N.’s decision on the South China Sea), despite its formal acceptance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Now, this may cause China several international problems. Yet, there is an American expression that “possession is nine-tenths of the law.” Meaning, in this case, that if China says it will keep the territory that it claims, that it will likely be able to do so.
The Philippines does not have the military resources to push China away. And neither the USA nor Europe would seem willing to go to war with China about this. However, the USA will likely decide to continue its ‘Asia pivot’ policy that was advocated by former US Secretary of State, now presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton. This will likely lead to a greater demonstration of USA naval ships in the South China Sea.
This ‘Asian pivot’ strategy has greatly concerned the Europeans as it essentially is a USA military shift away from Europe and towards Asia (and Australia). Europe is considering how to better arm itself, and that will not end well for the USA militarily per Daniel 11:39. Europe is trying not to unduly upset China, but also seems to want China to realize that naval vessels do have the right to proceed in what many consider international waters.
China does not just want territory and rights in the South China Sea. It also wants to dethrone the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency (watch also America’s Day of Reckoning 2017 Dollar Collapse?). But it also apparently wants to send a message to the world that it does not fear the USA or the UN. While that may not be entirely correct, all should realize that China hopes to become strong enough that the USA would not dare to take military steps that could provoke it.
The USA, itself, tends to be focusing on how to deal with China and Russia and the Middle East, which is part of why it will not see what is happening in Europe. The current world order dominated by the USA, and formerly by the UK is being changed. The Bible shows that the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7) is getting nearer–and that will greatly affect the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand which have descendants from Jacob also known as Israel. The Bible also tells of the final time of the Gentiles. (Luke 21:23-24; Revelation 11:2), which means the time when the descendants of Israel will no longer dominate the world scene.
Despite the UN court ruling, the Bible tells of a time when there will be a confederation of the ‘kings of the east’ that will get together (Revelation 16:12). This will include China, Korea, Japan, possibly even the Philippines. Things will one day dramatically change, militarily, in Asia, in terms of cooperation (Revelation 16:12).
That being said, China will have its own problems, nor will China, of itself, be the cause of the end of the USA–many of the Asians and the Europeans do want to see the end of USA dominance in the world, both militarily and economically, and that will happen–despite the fact that the USA has such a powerful military (cf. Daniel 11:39).
The main reason to mention all of this about the South China Sea prophetically is to emphasize that the USA has been involved in a ‘pivot’ towards Asia–and that will not save the USA (nor Australia or New Zealand for that matter).
The Bible tells of the final time of the Gentiles. (Luke 21:23-24; Revelation 11:2), which means the time when the descendants of Israel will no longer dominate the world scene. We are getting closer to that time (see also When Will the Great Tribulation Begin?).
