The first total solar eclipse in 99 years will be an unprecedented test of an American power grid that has become rapidly reliant on solar energy, according to Bloomberg. Power grids, utilities and generators are bracing for more than 12,000 megawatts of solar power to go offline starting around 9 a.m. in Oregon as the moon blocks out the sun across a 70-mile-wide (113-kilometer) corridor.
The eclipse has arrived at a time when the American power grid is becoming increasingly reliant on solar, wind and hydroelectric power.
“This is the first major test of the power grid since America started bringing large amounts of intermittent solar and wind resources onto the system. It comes just as the grid is undergoing an unprecedented transformation whereby flexible resources such as battery storage will complement growing supplies of solar and wind. Solar installations have grown ninefold since 2012 and renewable sources are forecast to supply just as much of America’s electricity demand as natural gas by 2040.”
… Anyone interested in watching the eclipse should use the proper precautions. Experts have warned that looking directly at the sun during the eclipse, while wearing sunglasses. The power grid could have problems, but a solar eclipse is not a massive risk to it.
But the eclipse is expected to permanently damage many people’s vision.

The “eclipse show” for land-dwellers begins on the Oregon coast at 09:05 local time (16:05 GMT; 17:05 BST) when skywatchers will see the moon start to traverse the Sun. Totality is reached at 10:16 (17:16 GMT; 18:16 BST), and, assuming none of the region’s famous coastal fogs are in attendance, people will get one minute and 59 seconds of full darkness.
The Moon’s shadow then races across the continent through 13 more states (less than two square kilometres of the extreme southwest of Iowa is in the path) – a journey that will take roughly 90 minutes.
The place that will experience the longest period of totality (2 mins, 40 sec) is about 10km south of the city of Carbondale, Illinois.

As noted by Karl Denninger at The Market Ticker, while the August 21st solar eclipse may be a once in a lifetime sight to see, the actual act of seeing it may cause serious damage to your eyesight:
You’ve probably seen various sites talking about safety issues. Please do not be one of the people that have that happen.
Because the eyes do not have pain receptors, if you are looking at the eclipse you will not know that your eyes are literally burning.
There will be no forewarning that you are about to lose your eyesight. And there will be nothing a doctor can do to restore your vision once the damage has been done.
Sun glasses will not help.

So, those who plan to try to view the solar eclipse need to exercise caution so that they do not injure their eyes.
As far as prophecies go, some have falsely claimed that this solar eclipse is or marks the ‘end of the world’ or is an important ‘sign from God’ (watch Solar Eclipse and the Apocalypse).
The latest edition of the Protestant TBN program Christian World News bounced around whether or not this solar eclipse has prophetic ramifications.
It does not.
Mark Biltz, who was one who improperly promoted the ‘blood moons’ a couple of years ago, is also promoting a supposed prophetic significance of this eclipse. He was wrong before and remains wrong again.
Let’s look at the BIBLICAL prophecies related to the sun being darkened in the end times:
29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. (Matthew 24:29-31)
12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.(Revelation 6:12)
Notice that both accounts are of something that takes place AFTER the Great Tribulation (which is the fifth seal in Revelation).
The solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 is simply a natural phenomenon. But can be dangerous. Be cautious and do not look directly at parts of it.
