Donald Trump threatens China with an additional $100 billion in tariffs; China declares the European Union must act with it

Donald Trump announced more possible tariffs against China, so China is turning more towards the European Union:

BRUSSELS: China on Friday (Apr 6) called on the European Union to take a joint stand against US protectionism as the tit-for-tat trade rift between Washington and Beijing threatened to entangle Europe.

The call to Brussels came as US President Donald Trump warned that he could slap another US$100 billion of extra tariffs on China’s imports, fanning fresh fears of a global trade war.

“China and the EU … should take a clear stance against protectionism, jointly preserve the rules-based multilateral trade order, and keep the global economy on a sound and sustainable track,” Zhang Ming, the head of the Chinese mission to the EU, said in a statement sent to AFP.

“This is a joint responsibility of China and the EU. We must act together to make that happen,” Zhang said.

In his statement, Zhang firmly defended multilateralism and said “the United States turns its back on these globally recognised rules and its own commitment.”

These “protectionist moves under the pretext of national security will undermine the credibility of the WTO-centred multilateral trade system, and the rules-based global trade order,” he added.

BRUSSELS, April 6 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday he had asked the U.S. Trade Representative to consider slapping 100 billion U.S. dollars worth of additional tariffs on China, a dramatic move that threatens to undermine the global trade system.

As staunch supporters of free trade and multilateralism, China and European countries would bear the consequences of U.S. trade protectionism if Trump topples the global order, experts have said.

DIVIDE-AND-RULE TACTICS

Resorting to protectionist moves the likes of which haven’t been seen in decades, Washington announced last month that it would impose a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum.

The White House then decided to grant the European Union (EU) and six other economies a temporary exemption from the tariffs before Trump signed a memorandum that imposes tariffs on Chinese imports worth up to 50 billion dollars. …

Trump was obviously trying to get Germany and France to side with him. In fact, he was using “divide-and-rule tactics,” said Wang Yiwei, an expert on European studies at Renmin University in Beijing.

SELLING SNAKE OIL

However, due to Trump’s increasingly isolationist policy, the United States is no longer Europe’s go-to guy. What’s more, his trying to sell his European partners on the so-called “China trade threat” is nothing short of “selling snake oil,” according to some European media.

“Trump questioned the global trading order after the Second World War. And he wants to go back to nineteenth-century nationalist protectionism,” said DPA, a leading press agency in Germany, in an analytical report published after Trump’s phone conversation with Merkel.

“If they (European countries) play games with the Americans at the expense of free trade with China, then Europe would have practically taken over Trump’s protectionism,” DPA said. …

A bilateral agreement between the EU and the United States would “enable Trump to drive a wedge between the EU and the other WTO (World Trade Organization) members,” said Gabriel Felbermayr, director of the Center for International Economics at the Ifo Institute for Economic Research, a Munich-based institution. …

“It is no longer the United States, but China that has become Europe’s most important trading partner,” said Felbermayr. …

“In a world of great uncertainties, a stable China-EU relationship is an invaluable asset,” said Zhang Ming, head of the Chinese Mission to the EU.

“China and the EU, as major members of the WTO and comprehensive strategic partners, should take a clear stance against protectionism, jointly preserve the rules-based multilateral trade order and keep the global economy on a sound and sustainable track,” Zhang said in a signed article published on the Politico website Wednesday.

So, China considers the European Union as a source of trade stability compared to the USA under its President Donald Trump.

Europe will get more involved.

While ‘Babylon’ will not reign in 2018, with the USA pulling out of trade deals and/or wishing to change them, steps are occurring that are pushing Europe to dominate trade (watch Trade Wars: Are COG warnings coming to pass?). The Europeans have been working with Latin America, China, Russia’s Eurasian Union, and other areas of the world to try to set up its dominance of world trade as well as standards for world trade.

And now we see the Chinese calling for European help.

The USA will not like it if the Europeans cooperate much with the Chinese.

Trade issues will be a factor that will trigger WWIII. A war that will be against the USA, Canada, and UK and led by a power that will reorganize (Revelation 17:12-13) and then rise in Europe. A Europe that is angry at the UK for Brexit and one that is mad at the USA for a host of reasons (including decisions of its former President Obama and statements by its current President Donald Trump).

Trade wars tend to increase prices and affect jobs. Tariffs are a tax, directly or indirectly, paid for by consumers.

China, itself, would like to dominate the world.

China is really concerned that a trade war will hurt it and its ambitions.

Though many are focused on China, let me make it clear that the power that the Bible reveals that will dominate trade later this century is not China or the USA, but Europe (cf. Revelation 18). China’s call out to the European Union today is additional evidence that the world is moving in the direction that the Bible prophesies.
