WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The Trump administration lashed out at some of America’s closest traditional allies on Thursday, accusing Britain, France and Germany of trying to “break” U.S. sanctions against Iran and calling on European nations to join the United States in withdrawing from the landmark 2015 Iranian nuclear deal.
In an unusually blunt speech to a Middle East conference in Poland, Vice President Mike Pence slammed the three countries and the European Union as a whole for remaining parties to the agreement after the Trump administration withdrew from it last year and re-imposed tough sanctions on Iran.
The harsh criticism threatened to further chill U.S.-European ties, already badly strained, including over the Iran focus of the Warsaw conference, co-hosted by the U.S. and Poland. France and Germany had declined to send their top diplomats to the foreign minister-level meeting and E.U. foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini also stayed away.
Pence was especially critical of Britain, France and Germany for unveiling last month a new financial mechanism that U.S. officials believe is intended to keep the nuclear deal alive by evading American sanctions. Pence praised other nations for complying with the sanctions by reducing Iranian oil imports but said the Europeans fell short.
“Sadly, some of our leading European partners have not been nearly as cooperative,” Pence said. “In fact, they have led the effort to create mechanisms to break up our sanctions.”
He said the mechanism, known as the “special purpose vehicle,” is “an effort to break American sanctions against Iran’s murderous regime.” ″It’s an ill-advised step that that will only strengthen Iran, weaken the E.U., and create still more distance between Europe and the United States.”
Pence then called for Europe to abandon the nuclear agreement.
“The time has come for our European partners to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and join with us as we bring the economic and diplomatic pressure necessary to give the Iranian people, the region and the world the peace security and freedom they deserve,” he said. https://www.apnews.com/edb531aaea264f5682b4ebe82bdb3414
The fact that certain high level European leaders did not attend should show the US that the Europeans are not interested in being lectured to by the Americans on these matters.
Europe wants to trade with Iran without using US dollars and via bypassing US financial controls.
Vice President Pence does not like this.

The European Union is going to ditch the US dollar and use its own currency in oil contracts worth 300 billion euros, an Iranian official said, quoting a European commissioner.
“Based on the news I recently received and was confirmed by a European commissioner, from now on, the EU is going to ditch the US dollar and just use the euro in the financial transactions of all European oil deals with other countries,” said Iran’s nuclear chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, on Thursday. …
European capitals are increasingly frustrated with the global dominance of the dollar as a reserve currency, which hands the United States unparalleled diplomatic and economic power in a globalized world.
Governments, banks and multinationals are at the mercy of US authorities, which have the legal power to switch off access to the world economy if any company or country runs afoul of Washington.
“In the current context of incertitudes – trade conflicts, extra territorial sanctions by the US – the market participants are looking for alternative,” said EU economics affairs commissioner Pierre Moscovici at a news conference in Brussels. …
In order to resolve the issue, Europe has promised to establish the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), a mechanism which is supposed to bypass US sanctions against Tehran. … In his Thursday remarks, Iran’s nuclear chief expressed hope that the SPV will be in place by the end of December. …
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who also quoted Europeans as saying that the SPV will be launched very soon.

Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s top foreign-policy official, said in New York on Monday that the plan to create a “special purpose vehicle” for trade with Iran “will mean that EU member states will set up a legal entity to facilitate legitimate financial transactions with Iran, and this will allow European companies to continue trade with Iran.” … it is clear to the Europeans (as well as the Chinese and Russians) that any future transactions with Iran must go through entities insulated from the American financial system. …
Mogherini indicated that Germany, France and the U.K. would set up a multinational state-backed financial intermediary that would deal with companies interested in Iran transactions and with Iranian counter-parties. Such transactions, presumably in euros and pounds sterling, would not be transparent to American authorities. European companies dealing with the state-owned intermediary technically might not even be in violation of the U.S. sanctions as currently written. Professor Abramov: “If Russia succeeds in convincing European Union countries, as our main consumers, to make oil payments in euros rather than dollars, this would be a real, tangible blow to the dollar.

Note the question: “Why would they want to force a confrontation between Europe and the United States?”
Well, because Europe wants to rule the world and it more and more sees that the USA is in its way (watch also PESCO and a Great European Army). Whether it uses the euro, some basket of currencies, or something else, Europe is looking at financial ways to push the USA aside.
As I warned prior to Donald Trump’s inauguration, there will be many “unintended consequences” to some of his policies and statements–several of which are being parroted by Vice President Pence.
There is a cost to US sanctions and various policies.
Europe is getting more and more offended by the US and wants to go its own way.

The Europeans may agree to some of what the US wants, but they are tiring of being bullied by the US.
