Theresa May asks for a no later than June Brexit delay; Donald Trump Jr. says she should have listened to his father

Instead of having another Brexit vote today (which basically got blocked, see ‘Britain – Hard Exit or Cancellation of BREXIT’), UK Prime Minister Theresa May has asked the European Union (EU) for a delay:

LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Theresa May formally asked the European Union on Wednesday to postpone Britain’s departure from the bloc — due in nine days — until June 30. But a frustrated EU has warned it could keep Britain waiting for an answer.
In a letter to European Council President Donald Tusk, May said the Brexit process “clearly will not be completed before 29 March, 2019” — the date fixed in law two years ago for Britain’s departure.
She asked for a delay until June 30, and said she wanted to set out her reasons to EU leaders at a summit in Brussels on Thursday.
Opposition politicians, and pro-EU members of May’s Conservative government, had urged a longer extension, saying a delay of just a few months could leave Britain once again facing a cliff-edge “no-deal” Brexit this summer.
But a long extension would infuriate the pro-Brexit wing of May’s divided party, and would require Britain to participate in the late May election for the European Parliament.
May said that would be unacceptable.
“As prime minister I am not prepared to delay Brexit any further than June 30,” she said in the House of Commons.
She said a longer delay would result in Parliament spending “endless hours contemplating its navel on Brexit.”

Mrs May said Commons votes had already been held on different Brexit options and the “one positive thing” that had been agreed was to rule out a no-deal departure on 29 March.

The EU has already stated that the UK would need to give a strong reason for a delay for it to consider such a request. Well, the request has been made, and presumably Theresa May will give her strong reasons tomorrow.
When he was still a candidate for the presidency of the USA, Donald Trump was one to the two most well known personalities outside the UK that publicly urged the UK to vote to leave the EU (the other was France’s Marine Le Pen). As US President, he later met with Theresa May and gave his view of how she should handle Brexit.

With just over a week to go until the deadline for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union, the son of President Donald Trump says that everything would be on track had British Prime Minister Theresa May taken his father’s advice on Brexit.
In an op-ed published Tuesday in the London-based Telegraph, Donald Trump Jr. said the failure of the country to navigate an exit from the EU by the deadline is an example of how establishment elites try to subvert the will of the people. …
Nearly three years after the U.K. approved Brexit, the details of the planned exit are still in flux. Because May “ignored advice from my father,” he said, a process that “should have taken only a few short months has become a years-long stalemate, leaving the British people in limbo.” Now, Trump Jr. said, “the clock has virtually run out and almost all is lost – exactly as the European elites were hoping.” …
This week President Trump’s former adviser Steve Bannon elaborated on the advice Trump allegedly gave May. “Trump sat there and said ‘Listen — number one — overshoot the target on your deal because it will come apart,” Bannon said in an interview with Sky News. “‘Number two get on with it — you ought to be on terms agreed within six months; and number three use every arrow in your quiver even if you have to do litigation later.'”

The EU was always opposed to Brexit.
Its basic position seems to be that the UK caused this, they tried to negotiate with the UK, they worked out a deal with UK representatives, the UK Parliament has repeatedly rejected the deal, and if the UK does not want a no deal Brexit, its government needs to officially accept the deal that was offered.
Theresa May thought when she got a letter of clarification from the EU over the Irish border matter, that she would get the votes in Parliament to approve the Brexit deal. But when a top UK legal person said that the letter was not sufficiently legally binding, she did not get enough votes for that last week (see also Brexit: Parliament turns down PM May’s plan: Some say ‘chaos,’ while Europeans are not pleased).
Theresa May now seems to be hoping that if she can get legally binding assurances related to the Irish border situation from the EU, that the UK Parliament will approve the deal.

Brexit is a mess.
Whether or not Donald Trump’s advice would have helped the UK (it certainly would have increased the anger of the EU), the reality is that the Brexit matter is a mess and the EU is not happy with the UK.

The EU will only agree to a short delay to Brexit if MPs approve the current withdrawal agreement next week, Theresa May has been told.
EU Council President Donald Tusk said an extension, requested by the prime minister on Wednesday, was possible.

THIS IS THE SAME DEAL THAT UK MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT (MPs) HAVE TURNED DOWN TWICE. If the EU really holds to this, then if the UK does not approve the existing deal next week, then the UK is apparently out of the EU without a deal and with almost no warning to prepare for it. This has massive chaotic potential for the UK and even parts of Europe. This type of departure, or even if the UK accepts the deal, would set a powerful example to any other nations in the EU who would consider the possibility of leaving it.
The end result of Brexit, no matter what happens this week or next, and even if there is no actual exit, will not end well for the UK (cf. Daniel 8:24-25).
