TL: ‘Deal or No-Deal, Brexit Dooms the Euro’

The pound has continued to fall on currency markets as the government insists that the UK is prepared to leave the EU without a deal. …

Under new Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the government has toughened its stance on a no-deal Brexit, which it has said is “now a very real prospect”.

The pound – which was trading at about $1.50 against the dollar before the EU referendum in June 2016 – has dropped by 2.4% since Monday, when a spokeswoman for Downing Street said that the UK would not enter talks with Europe unless the so-called Irish backstop is scrapped.

She said that because the EU has said it is not willing to renegotiate on this point, “we must assume there will be a no-deal Brexit on 31 October.” https://www.bbc.com/news/business-49162356

The final negotiators on the UK side with the EU were against Brexit. So, they got a deal that was not truly a BRitish EXIT (from which the term Brexit derives) from the European Union. The current set of UK negotiators are in favor of Brexit and hope that being serious about a no deal departure will persuade the EU to cave on key points.

The EU has since stated that it will not change the key points.

Some believe the Brexit will cause economic harm to the EU. I am one of them.

Some have also indicated that Brexit will severely harm the Euro. Tom Luongo (TL) posted the following:

With 10 Downing St. now saying No-Deal is acceptable, the hard line negotiating tactics of the European Union have hit a rocky shore.

Because it looks like Boris Johnson is ready to give as good as he gets.

I’ve been saying this for a long time. The EU is not a tough nut to crack. They have no leverage in these Brexit negotiations.

What they had was a stacked deck of British officials negotiating with Brussels on Brussels’ terms.

It’s not a negotiation if both sides agree on terms. It’s a surrender. …

The pound is falling out of bed today below $1.24 because Johnson looks serious about re-opening negotiations or opting for No-Deal.

But here’s the thing. The eurozone is facing a recession. I‘ve talked about Germany’s freefalling economy before. It’s not getting any better. And it won’t if a no-deal Brexit occurs. …

No-Deal Brexit is very much on the table.

Would Macron allow a no-deal to hurt rival Germany since Germany’s trade deficit with the U.K. is more important to them than France?

I think so.

Johnson would be happy to sit down with Trump and cut a free-trade deal yesterday. But being in the EU forbids this. …

Europe can’t and won’t respond to Johnson until the last possible minute. Its hardball tactics on Brexit are all it has.

“Deal or No Deal” was the name of a television game show that was popular in the USA and UK for a time. It was essentially a high risk game that was based upon luck. Brexit is more complicated and serious. The EU does not want to renegotiate it’s Brexit offer–and that is the one that Boris Johnson says he will not accept.

Furthermore, Boris Johnson said he would not even sit down and negotiate with the EU until it eliminates something called the Irish backstop. The EU has stated that it will not drop it:

Boris Johnson and Leo Varadkar have clashed over the Irish backstop in their first phone call, with the Irish taoiseach saying the EU is united in the view that it cannot be scrapped and the withdrawal agreement will not be reopened. …

Johnson made clear his view that the UK would be leaving the EU on 31 October regardless of whether a deal has been struck and any new agreement must be “one that abolishes the backstop”.

Leo Varadkar is Ireland’s Taoiseach, which basically means Prime Minister.

I warned years ago that the situation with Ireland would be be a problem with Brexit and we are seeing that now.

Consider also that the European Union’s two presidents have said that the EU will not renegotiate a better deal with the UK (though the newest one Ursula von der Leyen has indicated more flexibility).

That may well be.

However, there still will be some talk of negotiations for a ‘no deal’ Brexit as both the EU and the UK will have to discuss various trade, immigration, and financial matters. Ireland will want to talk, but at this moment both sides are very far apart.

We could have a hard Brexit.

A no deal Brexit is often referred to as a hard Brexit.

As far as the EU’s real feelings go, BBC’s Kevin Connolly reported a while back (see EU states that UK must pay a price for Brexit and be worse off than EU member states):

The 27 EU Remainer states are adamant that Britain will pay a price for leaving and will be worse off outside than the union than it is on the inside.

The EU does not want other nations thinking that they can, should, or might leave.

Yet, the EU itself is subject to being severely damaged economically from how it may handle a no deal Brexit.

It is also floating new banking and investment rules that may also be intended to punish the UK for Brexit:

The European Commission will be blocking five countries from accessing parts of the European Union’s financial markets — in a move that could hit the United Kingdom after it leaves the bloc … The move is seen by some as a warning to Britain that it needs to be aligned with EU rules if it wants its trading platforms and financial firms to continue having direct access to customers in the bloc. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/29/eu-to-strip-canada-brazil-singapore-of-market-access-rights-ft.html

The EU is pushing rules that it hopes will give it more power to set the financial standards for the world.

Germany’s highest court on Tuesday rejected a legal challenge to the European Central Bank’s (ECB) supervision of large banks and structural fund for failing institutions. …

What is the ECB’s banking union? It refers to the ECB’s power to check whether the biggest banks in the eurozone are following banking rules and help any of them that are failing to overcome their financial difficulties.

While the EU will have some administrative success with that, EU rules and standards also may put the EU in a position where it will have a major banking crisis.

The late Pastor General of the old Worldwide Church of God, Herbert W. Armstrong, had a view about banking matters and European unity. Here is something he said in a sermon on July 7, 1984:

And I can see now, the event that is going to trigger the formation of the reunification in Europe; the resurrection of the medieval Holy Roman Empire that we’ve been looking forward to that is prophesied to come…

But I believe that some event is going to happen suddenly just like out a blue sky that is going to shock the whole world and is going to cause the nations in Europe to realize they must unite! … Well now I think I can see what may be the very event that is going to trigger…that is the economic situation in the world…

The whole banking structure in the United States is a network all jointed together. But not only that, one nation has to deal with other nations and imports and exports. And so they have to have a means of transforming money from one nation to another. And so the banking structure is international and interwoven…

Now when the financial structure breaks down, all civilization is going to break down…

So, an economic or banking crisis is what Herbert W. Armstrong concluded would drive Europe to unite. Economic factors will be a reason that Europe will reorganize and put in place the Beast power:

12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)

Europe will reorganize.

One day the European Beast power will arise and take actions that most of those in the UK (as well as USA and Canada) will not consider possible (cf. Daniel 8:24-25, 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).

Although the EU may compromise on some points with Boris Johnson, a ‘no deal’ or ‘hard Brexit’ will tend to speed-up European resolve against the UK, its British-descended allies, and the USA.
