Canada’s election on the Last Great Day

COGwriter

On October 21, 2019 (which is a biblical holy day, commonly referred to as the Last Great Day) Canada has scheduled its federal election. My family and I actually expect to be in Canada that day, as I plan to give a sermon in Montreal then.

Anyway, here is some information about some hoping to become Canada’s Prime Minister:

10 October 2019

When a brash businessman-turned-politician won a majority government in Canada’s most populous province in 2018, Conservatives in the country wondered if they could ride a similar populist wave to national victory in this year’s general election.

Promising to slash income tax, cut fuel prices and repeal carbon pricing, Doug Ford took 41% of the vote and ended 15 years of Liberal rule in Ontario.

In the weeks after his win, Conservative leaders flocked to his side, bathing in reflected electoral glory – and speculating that similar tactics might take them to victory over Justin Trudeau.

But as the federal election draws near, Canada’s Conservatives have adopted a very different tactic: avoiding Ford at all costs.

In less than a year, Ford’s stock as an electoral asset has plummeted: the Conservative leader, Andrew Scheer, hasn’t appeared at a single campaign event with the premier, even when canvassing in Ford’s own neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, the Conservatives have struggled to build momentum outside their base. Scheer has failed to draw crowds to his campaign events, and has been forced to defend past remarks on same-sex marriage and abortion.

And even after the prime minister became entangled in two scandals – ethics violations and images showing him in racist blackface, polls show Scheer and Trudeau locked in a dead heat. Conservative strategists worry that Scheer has failed to galvanize voters – and that Ford has become so toxic that he is hampering the party’s chances of forming a government. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/10/canada-election-doug-ford-ontario-premier-kryptonite-conservatives

When Trump came into power, Canada was on its typical “we’re better than America” high horse, having newly elected Justin Trudeau, a self-proclaimed feminist prime minister, who had just sworn in the country’s first gender-balanced cabinet. But, as an orange-hued, hate-fuelled political hurricane ripped through the States, the “Trump effect” didn’t stay confined to U.S. borders. “Trump was like this huge road-runner anvil dumped in the middle of everybody’s path,” says Sarah Goldfeder, a former U.S. diplomat turned political commentator with Earnscliffe Strategy Group. As we near the Canadian federal election, she adds, “there is a sense of being an observer of history and voters fearing we will fall into the same traps as the U.S. electorate did.” How exactly will this all play out on Oct. 21? And what has pushed certain women voters to step up and organize in ways they never have before?

Not only are the federal parties running against each other, they’re running in opposition to Trump-era ideologies. Well, the NDP, Green and Liberal parties are at least, with New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh publicly calling for Trump’s impeachment and both Trudeau and Green Party leader Elizabeth May knocking Conservative Andrew Scheer for sharing values with the U.S. president. Scheer denied the claim at the first national leaders’ debate, but if you look at his foreign policy, his past statements on LGBTQ marriage and his refusal to participate in Pride events, plus his personal anti-abortion stance, the connection is not a stretch.

We’ve already witnessed the Trump effect at the provincial level. Since 2015, five provinces have changed from Liberal or NDP to Conservative — six out of ten Canadian provinces have Conservative governments, five of them majorities. “And these are not Progressive-Conservative governments,” says Kate Bezanson, an associate professor at Brock University who specializes in political economy, sociology and gender. “They have a strong resonance to the kind of right-wing populism we see in the U.S.” Think “big Republican” Doug Ford in Ontario and Jason Kenney in Alberta. 10/09/19 https://www.refinery29.com/en-ca/2019/10/8515131/trump-effect-on-canadian-voters-federal-election

The Conservatives and the Liberals have been locked in a dead heat for the entire campaign, so this was a chance to get some momentum before Canadians head to the polls on 21 October. …

Andrew Scheer attacked Mr Trudeau straight out of the gate – slamming him as “a phony” and “a fraud” who doesn’t deserve to be re-elected, and continued to go after him repeatedly on two issues that have been his Achilles heel with voters: the SNC-Lavalin affair and the blackface scandal.

With SNC-Lavalin, a federal ethics commissioner found the prime minister improperly tried to influence his former minister to prevent the construction company being prosecuted for corruption – a political crisis that caused Mr Trudeau to slump in the polls earlier this year.

But the Liberal leader’s electoral fortunes seem to have recovered, despite old images of him in blackface surfacing in September.

And pivoting on Mr Trudeau’s frequent attempts to link the federal Conservative leader with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has made unpopular budget cuts in the vote-rich province, Mr Scheer snapped: “You seem to be oddly obsessed with provincial politics”.

Mr Trudeau proved willing to fight back and make his Conservative political rival his rhetorical punching bag, forcing him to defend his stance on social issues such as abortion rights.

Mr Scheer is “personally pro-life” but has repeatedly said that, if elected, his party will not put forward or support legislation that would regulate abortion. 10/08/19 https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49901453

It does not seem like any of the candidates are pushing biblical morality or national repentance for Canada. But that is what Canada needs.

Since the election is on the Last Great Day, let’s see some of what Jesus said about on that day, probably in 30 A.D.:

37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:37-38)

According to an old, but probably modified in the 4th century document, it seems that Polycarp observed the Feast of Tabernacles in the second century including the Last Great Day:

I will give the narration in order, thus coming down to the history of the blessed Polycarp…

So also he pursued the reading of the Scriptures from childhood to old age, himself reading in church; and he recommended it to others, saying that the reading of the law and the prophets was the forerunner of grace, preparing and making straight the ways of the Lord, that is the hearts, which are like tablets whereon certain harsh beliefs and conceptions that were written before perfect knowledge came, are through the inculcation of the Old Testament, and the correct interpretation following thereupon, first smoothed and levelled, that, when the Holy Spirit comes as a pen, the grace and joy of the voice of the Gospel and of the doctrine of the immortal and heavenly Christ may be inscribed on them. And he said that they could not otherwise receive the impression of the seal which is given by baptism and engrave and exhibit the form conveyed in it, unless the wax were first softened and filled the deep parts. So also he thought that the hearts of the hearers ought to be softened and yield to the impress of the Word. For he said that it unfolded and opened, like closed doors, the minds of recent comers; and accordingly the prophet was bidden by God, Cry out mightily and spare not, Raise thy voice as a trumpet. What must one say, when even He that was gentler than all men so appeals and cries out at the feast of Tabernacles? For it is written; And on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, If any man thirsteth, let him come to Me and drink. (Pionius, Life of Polycarp (1889) from J. B. Lightfoot, The Apostolic Fathers, vol. 3.2, pp.488-506.)

Although it is adjacent to the Feast of Tabernacles, this eighth day is considered a separate Feast (Leviticus 23:36, 39. This eighth day helps picture the coming “Great White Throne Judgment” at which all of humanity that had not previously been truly called will have the chance to hear the real Gospel and accept God’s offer salvation (see also Universal OFFER of Salvation, Apokatastasis: Can God save the lost in an age to come? Hundreds of scriptures reveal God’s plan of salvation and Hope of Salvation: How the Continuing Church of God differ from most Protestants).

It may be of interest to note that the same basic Greek term for ‘great’ is used in both John 7:37 (for the day) and in Revelation 20:11 (for the white throne). In John 7, Jesus was quoting from the Book of Isaiah 55.

While pagans have had holidays for the dead, the Last Great Day is really the “Day of the Dead.” That is those that were spiritually and physically dead will be resurrected to have their opportunity for salvation (see also Hope of Salvation: How the COGs differ from most Protestants and Universal OFFER of Salvation, Apokatastasis: Can God save the lost in an age to come? Hundreds of scriptures reveal God’s plan of salvation).

All who were not called in this age and given a real opportunity for salvation will get one on the Last Great Day–which in the future will last one hundred years (cf. Isaiah 65:20).

Canadians, and others, who failed to repent in this age, will have an opportunity to do so then.

Elections in Canada, and elsewhere, will not solve the problems facing human-kind.

Canada and the rest of the world need the Kingdom of God.
