As China pushes through a new National Security law that Secretary of State Pompeo has described as a “death knell” for political freedom on the island, the last British governor of Hong Kong, who witnessed the raising of the Chinese flag over the territory’s seat of government back in 1997, is calling on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to “stop kowtowing” to Beijing and instead call out President Xi for violating the joint declaration. …
Hong Kong’s Beijing-installed chief executive has indicated that the local government, which she leads, will adopt and enforce the new laws, which will effectively render HK’s popular street demonstrations illegal.
This is why Chris Patten, best-known in the UK as the last governor of HK, believes it’s time for the West to take a harder line with Beijing. China has betrayed Hong Kong, Patten said. Beijing has no intention of ‘playing ball’ with the West, and it’s time for American and British industry to stop holding out for the “pot of gold” – ie unfettered access to the Chinese market. Because Beijing would never allow that to happen.
“The Hong Kong people have been betrayed by China,” Patten was quoted as saying by The Times newspaper. Britain, he said, had a “moral, economic and legal” duty to stand up for Hong Kong.
China’s plans to impose the new security law mentioned above is destroying the declaration, Patten said, and establishing a “Chinese dictatorship” (when the treaty was struck, the west hoped the government in Beijing would liberalize by the time Hong Kong was officially handed over in 2047. Instead, it’s China that’s imposing changes in Hong Kong’s culture from the top down). Hong Kong police warned protesters against unauthorized marches against China’s plans to impose a sweeping national security law, as the measure drew criticism from the U.S., the U.K. and other Western governments.
The foreign ministers of the U.K., Australia and Canada said they were “deeply concerned” by China’s proposal, while U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo called it “disastrous” and urged Beijing to reconsider.
China said it will introduce a law to prevent and punish any acts of secession, subversion or terrorism in the city that threaten national security. On the first day of China’s biggest political event of the year, Xi Jinping sent a clear message to Donald Trump: We’re going to do what we want in Hong Kong, and we’re not scared of the consequences.
China confirmed on Friday that it would effectively bypass the city’s legislature to implement national security laws, which have long been resisted by residents who fear they will erode freedoms of speech, assembly and the press. The announcement, which came on the same day China refrained from setting an economic growth target for the first time in decades, triggered immediate calls for fresh protests and sent the MSCI Hong Kong index to its worst loss since 2008.
For Xi, the move allows Beijing to reassert dominance over a piece of Chinese territory where his government was rendered impotent during sometimes-violent protests last year. Facing rising unemployment in the mainland due to the Covid-19 outbreak and the potential for a big loss in Hong Kong legislative elections set for September, the Communist Party decided it had more to gain by acting decisively to stem any potential threats.
“Xi feels threatened, the leadership feels threatened — this is a crisis,” said David Zweig, an emeritus professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and director of Transnational China Consulting Ltd. “This is, ‘We’re not going to give an inch, we’re going to tighten up, and Hong Kong’s national security as a potential subversive center is greater than its economic value.’ …
No matter what, U.S. actions won’t have much impact on how China governs Hong Kong given the recent decisions in Beijing, according to Antony Dapiran, a lawyer based in the city and author of “City on Fire: The Fight for Hong Kong.”

The United States is condemning China’s push to impose a new security law on Hong Kong, with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying if the law passes it would be a death knell for the territory’s autonomy. https://www.voanews.com/episode/us-chinas-security-law-would-be-death-knell-hong-kongs-autonomy-4298821
Hong Kong was long a part of China. Because of a 99 year lease entered into in 1898 with the UK, it was considered a British colony. But that lease ended. Some in the UK wish to extend the right to be British to those in Hong Kong, presumably so they can leave that territory. Hong Kong does not have the same ties with the USA.
I have long warned that the situation in Hong Kong would change.

China would prefer that Hong Kong authorities defuse the matter without its direct intervention.

Since 1997, Hong Kong was once again officially part of China. But Hong Kong also is to enjoy a special separative status a treaty guarantees until 2047:
In the Joint Declaration, the People’s Republic of China Government stated that it had decided to resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong (including Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories) with effect from 1 July 1997 and the United Kingdom Government declared that it would restore Hong Kong to the PRC with effect from 1 July 1997. In the document, the People’s Republic of China Government also declared its basic policies regarding Hong Kong.
In accordance with the “One country, two systems” principle agreed between the United Kingdom and the People’s Republic of China, the socialist system of the People’s Republic of China would not be practised in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and Hong Kong’s previous capitalist system and its way of life would remain unchanged for a period of 50 years. So, what it ahead for Hong Kong?
Bible prophecy tells of a coming military alliance between the powers in Asia which would include China and almost assuredly Taiwan and Hong Kong (Revelation 9:13-18; 16:12-16):
12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).
The literal translation of the expression ‘the kings of the east’ in Revelation 16:12 is “the kings of the sunrise” and thus this would seem to have to include places like Taiwan, which is east of mainland China as well as a place where the sunrise happens first.
Hong Kong will change. Because of its treaty as well as its apparent prophetic place, Hong Kong will more closely align with China militarily later, despite what its protesters and certain politicians may prefer.
