China approves Hong Kong National Security Law

China’s … parliament has approved a new national security law for Hong Kong that critics say threatens the city’s semi-autonomous status.

The National People’s Congress approved the controversial measure Thursday by a vote of 2,878 to one, with six members abstaining.

The new law would prevent and punish acts of “secession, subversion or terrorism activities” that threaten national security. The law would also allow Chinese national security organs to set up agencies in Hong Kong. The legislature’s Standing Committee will begin drafting details of the law, which is expected to take effect in September.

The legislation was widely condemned by business groups and Western nations as the death knell for Hong Kong’s status under the “one country, two systems” concept established after Britain handed over control of the financial hub to China in 1997, especially since it bypasses Hong Kong’s legislature.

Beijing’s announcement of the national security law for Hong Kong last week sparked a new round of protests similar to the massive and often violent demonstrations that engulfed the city during the second half of 2019. The protests were initially provoked by a controversial extradition bill that eventually evolved into a demand for greater democracy for the city.

As many as 360 people were arrested Wednesday night to protest the national security bill.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday he has reported to the U.S. Congress that Hong Kong is “no longer autonomous from China” and “Hong Kong does not continue to warrant treatment under United States laws,” given facts on the ground.

The secretary’s remarks indicate the United States is considering suspending the preferential status that has made the city a top U.S. trading partner.

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy activists are also angry over legislature under consideration in the city’s Legislative Council, dominated by pro-Beijing lawmakers, that would criminalize disrespect of China’s national anthem. The legislature was forced to adjourn Thursday’s session after two pro-democracy lawmakers were ejected from the chamber during an angry debate over the anthem law. https://www.voanews.com/east-asia-pacific/voa-news-china/chinas-parliament-approves-controversial-national-security-law

This move by China was not unexpected.

Hong Kong was long a part of China. Because of a 99 year lease entered into in 1898 with the UK, it was considered a British colony. But that lease ended. While officially, Hong Kong is supposed to be separate until 2047 because of treaty negotiated between the British and the Chinese, it had a security provision which the government of the People’s Republic of China has decided to exercise, but in a manner many in Hong Kong did not want.

I have long warned that the situation in Hong Kong would change. People in Hong Kong need to see “the handwriting on the wall” (Daniel 5) as the situation there will change.

Consider something I posted here related to Hong Kong protests in 2015:

China does not want protests and will take steps to get them cleared out if it feels that is its best course of action.

So, what it ahead for Hong Kong?

Bible prophecy tells of a coming military alliance between the powers in Asia which would include China and almost assuredly Taiwan and Hong Kong (Revelation 9:13-18; 16:12-16):

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).

The literal translation of the expression ‘the kings of the east’ in Revelation 16:12 is “the kings of the sunrise” and thus this would seem to have to include places like Taiwan, which is east of mainland China as well as a place where the sunrise happens first.

Hong Kong will change and become more closely aligned with China, despite what its protesters and certain politicians may prefer.
