UNITED NATIONS – The Biden administration on Thursday rescinded former President Donald Trump’s restoration of U.N. sanctions on Iran, an announcement that could help Washington move toward rejoining the 2015 nuclear agreement aimed at reining in the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
Acting U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills sent a letter to the U.N. Security Council on behalf of President Joe Biden saying the United States “hereby withdraws” three letters from the Trump administration culminating in its September 19 announcement that the United States had reimposed U.N. sanctions on Tehran.
Mills said in the letter obtained by The Associated Press that sanctions measures terminated in the 2015 council resolution endorsing the nuclear deal with six major powers, but restored by Trump in September, “remain terminated.”
Trump pulled the United States out of the agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, in 2018, accusing Iran of serious violations.
Biden has said the United States wants to rejoin the pact, and the State Department said Thursday that the U.S. would accept an invitation from the European Union to attend a meeting of the participants in the original agreement — Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and Iran. …

“The United States would be ready to hold talks with Iran if the European Union extended an invitation, a senior U.S. official said on Thursday, sketching out a possible diplomatic path to restore the 2015 Iran nuclear deal,” Reuters reports late in the day Thursday.
Further the official said the administration’s “goal is to get both sides back into compliance with the nuclear deal” and has extended the invitation to Iran: “Let’s talk about how to get there.”
Previously the administration appeared to balk when initially just such an offer was made two weeks ago by Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif for the European Union to coordinate a piecemeal approach for dropping sanctions and Iran’s return to conformity.
But now Reuters has cited a top admin official to say “We are ready to show up if such a meeting were to take place” – in what’s clearly an invitation for Iran to signal the same.
Iran has indicated it will begin blocking IAEA inspectors from its nuclear facilities starting Sunday, February 21st, hence this new scramble out of the Biden administration to find a way forward before this next escalation measure that many fear would be hard to roll back takes effect. Both the US and Europe are warning against such a step. …
At the start of this month State Department spokesman Ned Price appeared to shrug off EU-backed talks when asked directly about Tehran’s expressed willingness to engage through the Europeans. He said there are “many steps” that had to be taken before engaging “directly with Iran” and before the US is willing to “entertain any sort of proposal.” Later the White House appeared to walk back the comments.
The central point of controversy since Biden took office was over who would “move first”. The Biden White House has been adamant thus far that Iran must return to compliance with enrichment caps and walking back breaches of the terms of the JCPOA. At the same time Iran has pointed to US hypocrisy of backing out of the deal in the first place (under Trump in May 2018) but now demanding Iran’s conformity. Yes, Europe is involved. The USA is concerned it may be targeted by Iran if things do not go well:
The U.S. military is looking for fallback bases in Saudi Arabia to prevent its troops deployed there from becoming obvious targets in the event of tensions with Iran, a senior U.S. military official said Thursday.
“We are not looking for new bases. I want to be clear on that,” said Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, head of the U.S. Army Central Command, during a tour of the Middle East.
“What we would like to do, without shutting down these (current) bases … is to have the ability to go to other bases to operate in a period of heightened risk,” he explained.
“These are things that any prudent military planner would want to do to increase their flexibility, to make it more difficult for the adversary to target them,” he said.
The Wall Street Journal reported on plans for ports and air bases in the kingdom’s western desert, which the U.S. military would seek to develop as positions to be used if war were to break out with Iran.
At the year’s end, the U.S. military deployed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz to the region and had two B-52 bombers overfly the area.

While Iran does not have the power to truly defeat the USA militarily, it has the capacity to cause damage. It also has EMP and other capabilities (like dirty bombs) that could even harm those in the USA.

Israel warned that the United States was helping Iran develop a nuclear weapons arsenal with its decision late Thursday night to push to rejoin the 2015 Iran deal.
“Israel remains committed to preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons and its position on the nuclear agreement has not changed,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.
“Israel believes that going back to the old agreement will pave Iran’s path to a nuclear arsenal. In Iran, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Friday the Biden administration action meant that the U.S. had acknowledged moves made under Trump “had no legal validity.”
“We agree,” he added, urging the Biden administration to lift U.S. sanctions “imposed, reimposed or re-labeled by Trump. We will then immediately reverse all remedial measures.”
In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office expressed worry, saying it believes that “going back to the old agreement will pave Iran’s path to a nuclear arsenal.” It said in a statement on Friday that it it remains “committed to preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons” and was in close contact with the United States on the matter. https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-iran-iran-nuclear-middle-east-united-nations-d261fbe927984d9328db0e0f74b62410
Iran is aware of Netanyahu’s position–which is shared also, by some of Israel’s Arab neighbors. And Netanyahu’s position seems to include the idea of a preemptive strike by Israel against Iranian nuclear facilities.
In the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament, is the following prophecy about peoples that look to be in Iran (Elam below) and Syria (Kir below; cf. Isaiah 15:1) damaging the tiny nation of Israel in the end times:
6 Elam bore the quiver With chariots of men and horsemen, And Kir uncovered the shield. 7 It shall come to pass that your choicest valleys Shall be full of chariots, And the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.
8 He removed the protection of Judah. You looked in that day to the armor of the House of the Forest; 9 You also saw the damage to the city of David, That it was great; (Isaiah 22:1-14)
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would do well to better understand the scriptures.
It is not that Israel cannot damage Iran and Syria (cf. Isaiah 17:1).
But the cost to Israel, to one day be greatly damaged, looks to be the result. Yes, I expect that Iran will use missiles against Israel. Perhaps with a nuclear component.
To be clear, in Isaiah 22: 8, “Judah” is a reference to those in the land commonly called Israel–God will allow Israel to be attacked! In Isaiah 22:9, consider that “the damage to the city of David” is a reference to at least part of Jerusalem–and notice that the damage will be great. This, in turn, would be expected to result in a massive Israeli, possibly with US involvement, attack against Iran and its allies, like Syria.
More death and destruction is prophesied to come.
The Iranian nuclear deal and lifting sanctions will NOT bring permanent peace.
We may be in the early stages of the ride of the second horseman of the Apocalypse–that is the horseman that takes peace from the earth.
Removing sanctions and/or lack thereof may be interpreted by Iran or Israel to attack militarily against one another.
A regional war will come to the Middle East and it could be very soon.
