‘The danger of wishful Western thinking’ and ‘EU Steps Back From Impractical Russia Oil Embargo’
The BBC posted the following:
Katty Kay: The danger of wishful Western thinking
26 March 2022
Forty four million brave Ukrainians seem to have risen to the challenge and given us cause for hope in the power of the underdog.
We root for them. We are amazed by their resilience. We long for them to survive and stay free. So it’s understandable that we may fall victim to what one analyst eloquently described as Western wishful thinking. …
In the suburbs of Ukraine that have become Putin’s latest battlefield, David has indeed given Goliath an almighty shock. But, make no mistake, Russia is still a daunting adversary.
One senior European diplomat who understands Putin is convinced that the Russian president has no interest in negotiating any settlement. Rather, he thinks, Putin is using this moment to regroup and resupply, ready for another, potentially more devastating assault. Were hopeful Westerners at risk of underestimating Russia’s military chances, I asked? Yes, he nodded. …
Russia’s military boasts 900,000 active duty troops and two million reservists – more than eight times that of Ukraine. It still has a massive arsenal and a satellite state in Belarus from which it can draw more troops, as well as the ability to recruit mercenaries from countries like Georgia, or Syria. It has cyber warfare capabilities it has not yet fully unleashed. It has 4,500 nuclear weapons it has threatened to use, and chemical weapons that the West has warned it might.
The Russians have performed much worse than anyone expected, but they have made some territorial gains, making slow but steady progress around Mariupol and threatening to cut off Ukrainian forces near the breakaway eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Often, this progress has come by flattening civilian neighbourhoods. Ignoring or diminishing those gains, or the remaining power of the Russian military, won’t help Ukraine. Indeed it could hurt it. …
This is no time to be unrealistic. Wide-eyed realism will help Zelensky more than wishful thinking. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-60881915
Yes there is a lot, that many people want to believe related to Ukraine, that is not necessarily so.
One thing that is known is that Vladimir Putin is a student of Russian history and wants to take steps for the “glory of Russia.” Thus, he is not expected to “give up” with nothing more than an agreement with Ukraine to not join NATO. It is wishful thinking to conclude otherwise.
Furthermore, another aspect of wishful thinking is that sanctions, embargoes, etc. will have no real cost to the West. That is not true. Consider the following:
26 March 2022
Western nations should prepare their peoples for a long-term drop in living standards if their standoff with Russia continues, the Britain’s former Assistant Chief of Defence Staff, Jonathan Shaw, has said.
“We in the West have the wrong mentality” about the conflict in Ukraine, he said. Once one of the British Army’s most senior officers, Shaw was speaking on talk radio station LBC on Saturday. …
“We’ve now decided that as far as Russia’s concerned we’re going to play geopolitics ahead of economics and we’ve to pay a price for that,” he explained.
And, according to the Major-General, governments in the UK and elsewhere aren’t doing enough to ready their citizenry “for that sort of hardship and that attitude.”
“We need to be psychologically preparing our people for a long-term degradation of standard of living and a long-term confrontation with Russia,” he argued.
“Our quality of life back home absolutely depends on them – cheap fuel, cheap access, doing deals with Saudi Arabia, and things like that,” Shaw pointed out. https://www.rt.com/news/552752-ukraine-uk-west-sanctions/
Many leaders in continental Europe realize this and have been reconsidering how to handle matters such as fuels from Russia.
While most of the media is pushing the narrative that Europe will be trying to eliminate Russian oil and natural gas, a reporter from Reuters, named John Kemp, wrote the following:
EU Steps Back From Impractical Russia Oil Embargo: Kemp
March 26, 2022
EU leaders have stepped back from imposing an immediate embargo on Russian crude and petroleum product imports as the impracticality of the policy has become clear. Imposing an immediate embargo on Russia’s fossil fuels “from one day to the next would mean plunging our country and the whole of Europe into a recession,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz told German lawmakers this week.
Russia’s exports of crude and petroleum products to Europe are the second largest bilateral flow of oil between any two trading partners in the world, behind the United States and Canada, according to data from BP.
Russia supplied 29% of Europe’s crude imports and 51% of the continent’s petroleum product imports in 2019, the last year before the pandemic (“Statistical review of world energy”, BP, 2020).
No other trading partner came close to Russia’s share, which would make it extremely hard to replace in the short term.
So even speculation about a possible ban drove oil prices sharply higher this week, as traders weighed the practical difficulties, before prices retreated as it became clear EU policymakers were backing away from the idea.
New Oil Order?
Some embargo advocates have suggested the EU could ban Russian petroleum imports, then encourage the redirection of international flows to minimize the net loss of supplies from causing a spike in prices. In this scenario, sanctioned Russian crude would be left to buyers in China and India, freeing up crude from the Middle East to be delivered to refineries in Europe.
On the product side, Russian fuel oil and distillates could be sent to South America, Africa and Asia, while Europe takes more unsanctioned products from the United States, China, India and the Middle East.
But there are multiple serious obstacles to making this work, which is likely why it has been deferred for the time being.
For producers and consumers, supply routes would become much longer, increasing the number of freight tonne-miles, pushing up demand for tankers and raising transport costs significantly. More importantly, crude oils are only semi-fungible. Most refineries are optimized to work with specific qualities of oil. Swapping Russian and Middle East crudes would reduce efficiency, raising costs and prices. …
With little spare capacity, EU policymakers have concluded the price risks from embargoing Russian petroleum exports are too high, and have backed away from the idea for now. https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/eu-steps-back-impractical-russia-oil-embargo-kemp
Oil embargoes are tough for the whole world as they can lead to inflation, food shortages (oil is used to make fertilizers), recession, and possibly economic depression.
Germans realize that they still need Russian oil to support their economy. Germany and other parts of the European Union have concluded that they need to continue to import oil and natural gas from Russia. It is wishful thinking to conclude otherwise.
The Russians want to cooperate with the Europeans. Many in Europe see the need to continue to buy from Russia–in the future they will find other ways to cooperate with Russia.
Back in 1962, notice something that the old Radio Church of God published:
Germany, those living in Germany, even the German government, may not yet know that they are going to join in a treaty with the Russians to destroy the United States and bring it to its knees-it is not in his “heart” to think so, but on the other hand it IS in his “heart” to destroy-the very characteristic of the Assyrian, the modern German, is a harsh, cruel, iron, dedication to militarism and destruction! … (Hill DJ,What is Germany’s Destiny? Plain Truth, March 1962, pp. 28-29)
The German people are now asking themselves: “Can we rely on the Americans and British?” … These questions lead to the logical conclusion that maybe the only people the Germans can rely on themselves. They are now thinking: “Perhaps we can strike a better bargain with the Russians ourselves.” …
Once a German-dominated Europe is fully established, Germany will be ready to negotiate and bargain with Russia- and behind the backs of the Western Allies if necessary. ..
Most Americans and Britons are not aware of what Germany and Europe are planning against them. This is partly due to the cunning of German politics. …
World events are moving swiftly toward the climax when Great Britain and the United States will be attacked, conquered and DESTROYED! (Boraker R. Are the Germans Secretly Dealing with Moscow? Plain Truth, May 1962, pp. 45-47)
Yes, I, too, expect that Russia will make a deal with the Europeans that will lead to the end of the USA and its British-descended allies.
Do not think that Europe will not cooperate with Russia in the future against the USA, UK, and Canada.
To believe otherwise is wishful thinking that is inconsistent with various end-time biblical prophecies.
Last Fall, the BBC ran an article about lying to oneself, which is essentially a major form of “wishful thinking.” Related to that, the Continuing Church of God (CCOG) put together the following video on our Bible News Prophecy YouTube channel:
‘The Atlantic’ ran an article titled “Quit Lying to Yourself.’ It explained that this was not good and does not lead to happiness. The BBC ran an article about dangers of self-deception. The Bible warns about lies, self-deception, and pride. Does the New Testament warn that Christians can be deceived? What did Jesus say was the truth? What did Jesus tell end-time Laodicean Christians to do? Dr. Thiel addresses these issues and more in this video.
Here is a link to the sermonette video: Pride: Quit Lying to Yourself.
Although He did not use the term “wishful thinking,” Jesus warned and chastised Laodicean Christians (who represent the bulk of Christians today) when He stated the following:
14 “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write,
‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ — and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked — 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. (Revelation 3:14-19)
Sadly, most Laodicean Christians have so much wishful thinking, thinking that they are in a better spiritual condition than they are, to change and truly become Philadelphian. Here are links of possible assistance:

7. The Laodicean Church Era has been predominant circa 1986 A.D. to present. The Laodiceans are non-Philadelphians who mainly descended from the old WCG or its offshoots. They do not properly understand the work or biblical prophecies and will face the Great Tribulation if they do not repent. One video of related interest is 17 Laodicean Errors in Prophecy.
