‘Democracy vs. Monarchy’
Daily Reckoning published the following:
Democracy vs. Monarchy
Today we trample sacred ground… trumpet a message of heresy… and offend the pieties. For we challenge the cherished and soothing assumptions of democracy.
In 2001, academic Hans-Hermann Hoppe scribbled a book bearing the soaring title Democracy: The God That Failed. Hoppe’s work is a dart leveled against that holiest of secular divinities.
Hoppe’s primary tort against democracy?
It wastes. It exhausts its capital. It forever takes the short view. …
Democracy, in Hoppe’s regard, “wants it now.” It is a spendthrift, a profligate, a child at large in a candy store.
As the drunkard cannot see beyond the next drink… democracy cannot see past the next election.
The problem, says Hoppe, is that democratic leaders do not own the machinery of government. It is theirs on temporary loan. Thus the democratic politician is a mere placeholder. …
But because a leader under democracy does not own the government apparatus, argues Hoppe, he has no incentive to maximize its value. Instead, he tends to deplete it. His limited time horizon forces him toward immediate gratification.
That is, he must get while the getting is there to be gotten. …
And who, may we inquire, has ever run a rental through a wash?
Here Hoppe applies the theory to democratic government:
It must be regarded as unavoidable that public-government ownership results in continual capital consumption. Instead of maintaining or even enhancing the value of the government estate, as a king would do, a president (the government’s temporary caretaker or trustee) will use up as much of the government resources as quickly as possible, for what he does not consume now, he may never be able to consume… For a president, unlike for a king, moderation offers only disadvantages.
Hoppe speaks of a king.
Unlike democracy, Hoppe contends, monarchy takes the long view. The monarch owns the apparatus of government. As will his heirs. So he naturally inclines to policies that increase the value of his property over time. …
In brief, monarchy may be better with money than democracy. It is a superior steward of wealth — at least by this theory.
Once again, Hoppe:
While a king is by no means opposed to debt, he is constrained in this “natural” inclination by the fact that as the government’s private owner, he and his heirs are considered personally liable for the payment of all government debts (he can literally go bankrupt, or be forced by creditors to liquidate government assets). …
In distinct contrast, Hoppe argues, we find the democratic president:
A presidential government caretaker is not held liable for debts incurred during his tenure of office. Rather, his debts are considered “public,” to be repaid by future (equally nonliable) governments.
Perhaps this explains — pandemic aside — why the national debt of the United States runs to some $31 trillion?
It is a capital fact beyond all dispute …
Hoppe’s book is actually no call for monarchy. As the author himself states at the onset — “I am not a monarchist and the following is not a defense of monarchy.”

That does not mean that monarchs cannot be selfish (pretty much all humans are) or short-sighted, but there is a greater tendency for monarchs to think for more than let’s say, four years.
Anyway, this is NOT posted here to be for or against King Charles III, but to point out that there are major flaws with democracy.
The fact of USA debt is consistent with some of the flaws of democracy.
As far as democracy goes, In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 15 the International Day of Democracy. Since then, the day has become an annual opportunity to review the status of democracy around the world. But democracy and the United Nations are not the solution this world needs.
Although precisely who said the following is related to voting and democracy can debated, there is truth in the statements:
“When the people discover they can vote themselves money [welfare], that will herald the end of the republic.” – Benjamin Franklin*
‘Bread and Circuses’ is the cancer of democracy, the fatal disease for which there is no cure. Democracy often works beautifully at first. But once a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader – the barbarians enter Rome. – Robert A. Heinlein
That said, the Bible shows that a highly indebted nation will be taken over:
5 “Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man, And he does not stay at home. Because he enlarges his desire as hell, And he is like death, and cannot be satisfied, He gathers to himself all nations And heaps up for himself all peoples. 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his — how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you, Because of men’s blood And the violence of the land and the city, And of all who dwell in it. (Habakkuk 2:5-8)
Actually, with an admitted debt of almost $31 trillion dollars and plans to increase that much further, the USA has increased pledges more than any nation in the history of the planet. And on a per capita basis, the United Kingdom is one of the most indebted nations on the earth itself.
The above prophecy in Habakkuk will be fulfilled at the time of the end (cf. “The message was true, but the appointed time was long…in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come”, Daniel 10:1,14). Daniel 8:19, 11:27, 29,35 uses the same Hebrew term for “appointed time” as Habakkuk 2:3, while Daniel 10, using a different term, ties the latter days to the time in Daniel 8:19. Habakkuk 2 was not fulfilled in its entirety, anciently. Also, it makes little sense that Habakkuk would be directed towards the modern nation of Israel as it does not have enemy creditors. It must be a nation or group of nations with some prominence at the appointed time of the end. As far as “violence of the land” as a contributing factor, this would seem to include crime, military missions, and perhaps riots/civil unrest, but might it also include promotion of violent sports? Is the USA government not giving shameful counsel regarding matters such as homosexuality and abortion?
Notice also the following from the Commentary on Habakkuk from the ancient Dead Sea Scrolls (roughly 2000 years old; translated in the 1950s by F.F. Bruce):
God commanded Habakkuk to write the things that were coming upon the last generation, but the fulfilment of the epoch he did not make known to him. (1Q p Hab. vii 1-5)
While ancient commentaries like this are NOT scripture, this particular one shows that those who understood the Hebrew language around 2000 years ago believed that Habakkuk’s words had NOT then been fulfilled and were for the time of the end.
Hence, as the largest debtor nation in the history of humanity, it should be clear that democracy will not save the USA.
It should also be pointed out that in Europe, they will turn to the rule of a dictator (Revelation 13:1-10, 17:12-13) who will one day destroy the USA (Daniel 11:39) and its British-descended allies (cf. Daniel 8:25-25; Isaiah 17:3a)–hence neither democracy of the British monarchy will be able to save those nations.
So, what is the solution?
While national repentance would work, that is not expected.
Jesus warned:
21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. (Matthew 24:21-22)V
So, the solution?
Well, other than personal repentance (which all should do), the solution is the good news of the coming KINGDOM OF GOD! Here is some information from our free online booklet: The Gospel of the Kingdom of God:
The Bible teaches that a utopian society, called the Kingdom of God, will replace human governments (Daniel 2:44; Revelation 11:15; 19:1–21).
When Jesus began His public ministry, He began by preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God. Here is what Mark reported:
14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:14–15).
The term gospel, comes from the Greek word transliterated as euangelion, and means “good message” or “good news.” In the New Testament, the English word “kingdom,” related to God’s kingdom, is mentioned approximately 149 times in the NKJV and 151 in the Douay Rheims Bible. It comes from the Greek word transliterated as basileia which signifies the rule or realm of royalty.
Human kingdoms, as well as God’s kingdom, have a king (Revelation 17:14), they cover a geographic area (Revelation 11:15), they have rules (Isaiah 2:3–4; 30:9), and they have subjects (Luke 13:29).
Here is the first public teaching from Jesus that Matthew records:
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom (Matthew 4:23).
Matthew also records:
35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom (Matthew 9:35).
The New Testament shows that Jesus will reign forever:
33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end (Luke 1:33).
So, according to the Bible, the solution to the world’s problems will not be democracy, but a divine monarchy.
