HONG KONG (Reuters) – Virologists warned on Tuesday that there was no vaccine against a mutant strain of H5N1 bird flu now spreading in China and Vietnam and called for closer monitoring of the disease in poultry and wild birds to stop it .

Sydney Morning Herald – Julia MedewWhile the federal government yesterday said it was well prepared for an outbreak of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, leading scientist and Nobel prize winner Peter Doherty said the increasing spread of the virus in and around Asia was ”dangerous” because it could rob developing countries of food while creating a new pandemic.

H5 stands for the fifth of several known types of the protein hemagglutinin.

N1 stands for the first of several known types of the protein neuraminidase.

Thus, there is another bird flu that seems to have come from Asia. Because of agricultural practices related to raising of livestock, including poultry, Asia (often China) is traditionally the place where new flu viruses originate. But, of course, they then have a tendency to spread around the globe.

Relatively soon, serious pestilences are prophesied as we are prophetically at/near the point Jesus called “the beginning of sorrows”–which includes famines and pestilences (Matthew 24:7-8). Whether or how birds may be involved is not mentioned in scripture–but a reduction in poultry can certainly affect food supplies. We will see what happens with this strain of the “bird flu.”
