Australia snubs EU terms for free trade deal

Australia has rejected European Union proposals for a free trade agreement, and a deal is now unlikely to be reached for several years, Australian government ministers said Monday.

The country’s largest farm industry group thanked the government for refusing to “throw Aussie farmers under a bus” by signing a deal it said would not have let enough of their products into the EU.

The two sides have been negotiating since 2018, with Australia eager to boost agricultural exports by removing EU tariffs and expanding quotas, and Europe keen to gain greater access to Australia’s critical minerals industry.

Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell said after a meeting of Group of Seven (G7) trade ministers in the Japanese city of Osaka over the weekend that no progress had been made.

“I came to Osaka with the intention to finalize a free trade agreement,” Farrell said in a statement.

“Unfortunately we have not been able to make progress,” he said. “Negotiations will continue, and I am hopeful that one day we will sign a deal that benefits both Australia and our European friends.”

Australia’s agriculture minister Murray Watt said the EU — one of the world’s largest markets — had only slightly tweaked the proposal it put on the table three months ago.

“We just weren’t able to see the EU increase its offer for things like beef, sheep, dairy, sugar enough for us to think that this deal was in Australia’s national interest,” he told ABC Radio.

EU trade chief Valdis Dombrovskis said the bloc had “presented a commercially meaningful agricultural market access offer to Australia, while being mindful of the interests of the European agricultural sector.” …

In other words, Australian farmers are upset that Europe is overly protecting European farmers against increases in imports from Australia.

As far as trade, Australia, the EU, and others go, notice number 8 of my list of 23 items to prophetically watch in 2023:

8. Trade

Not all warfare is militaristic. There is also economic warfare.

This often involves trade.

The major use of sanctions, mainly pushed by the USA, has been continuing.

This is affecting trade and pushing trade away from the USA. But also encouraging the Anglo-nations to try to increase trade with each other.

Back in 2008, I posted the following:

In the spirit of accommodation and personal interest, many of the “standards” of the European Union will be adopted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as by nearly all of the countries of the world. The Arab nations will most likely agree with many of the standards as they seem to be destined to form a brief end-time alliance with the Europeans (The Arab World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy).

However, over time, it will become increasingly clear that the British will be in more agreement with the Canadians and Americans and that the European Union in more agreement with the Mexicans than the EU will have with the English-speaking nations.

Trade wars and/or serious trade disputes will most likely arise.

The Brits will ultimately decide that they are more supportive of the Americans and Canadians. They will be so much more supportive that they will end up in a trading agreement with them (with the Australians and New Zealanders probably also becoming part of that agreement).

The EU will decide that Mexico and the rest of Latin America are in more agreement with it and thus make some type of serious trading agreement with most (or all) of Latin America. The Vatican will also have influence here as Latin America is highly Roman Catholic.

The Europeans and Americans, however, will continue to have military agreements, though many will be tense about them. (Thiel B. A Combined EU & North American Trade Block Coming? COGwriter.com, March 3, 2008)

Since the above was posted, the Europeans and Americans continue to have military agreements, the UK essentially reduced its trade from the rest of Europe because of Brexit, today we see a UK-NZ trade deal, the EU has made trade deals with Mexico and Latin America (see EU’s Juncker essentially verified accuracy of 2008 COGwriter prediction on trade), the USA made a new trade deal with Canada (see Brexit: ‘The end is nigh’ and Donald Trump signs Canada-Mexico trade deal), the UK and EU continue to have trade friction (see DW: EU-UK trade war looming as Northern Ireland Protocol tensions hit boiling point), and the EU has continued to push its standards (which is one of the reasons there is an issue related to Brexit and Northern Ireland). In 2021, the UK made deals with New Zealand (see CNN: New Zealand and the United Kingdom reach free trade deal) and Australia (see UK & Australia make trade deals, so?). And the USA made a special deal with the UK and Australia (see AUKUS alliance; EU wants its own stronger military).

Expect the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to try to increase trade with each other.

And Europe?

In 2018, I wrote:

The Europeans have been working with Latin America, China, Russia’s Eurasian Union, and other areas of the world to try to set up its dominance of world trade as well as standards for world trade. (19 items to prophetically watch in 2019)

Such deals have been happening.

Related to other EU trade deals, some happened this past Spring (see Ursula von der Leyen making trade deals in Latin America). The EU also threatened tariffs against the USA this past Summer (see ‘EU parliament trade chief calls for tariffs on US hydrogen’).

While the EU will continue to have trade with Australia, the UK, USA, Canada, and New Zealand (and it does have a recent deal in place with New Zealand), expect the EU to become more upset with the USA and its British-descended allies.

But also consider that Europe will continue to take steps to increase trade around the world. Its ‘Global Gateway’ program and the India-Middle East connection announcement last month (see India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) to connect India and parts of Asia to Europe via the Middle East for trade) show that it is making progress to do so.

The Bible prophesies that end-time Babylon will be an economically and warringly-successful European entity

The Bible tells of a trading power arising in Europe that is tied to the City of Seven Hills.

Ultimately, this will not go as well for the Australia or its English-speaking allies of the USA, Canada, the UK, and New Zealand.

And yes, the Europeans will remember Brexit as well.

Trade will be a factor in what can be called World War III–and this war will be a conflict with Europe (but the ‘shooting’ aspect of this will not happen before 2026; for some details, see When Will the Great Tribulation Begin?).
