Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg says Donald Trump presidency should be a wake-up call for Germany/Europe to arm

Back in December 2015, former German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg called Donald Trump “that blonde lunatic named Donald” (Guttenberg KT. Wish List or Reality? Now, he seems to see Donald Trump as a motivator for Europe to arm.

The election in the USA has a clear winner: Donald Trump. One is rightly shocked that someone with such a character could hold one of the highest offices in the world, said former Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg in an interview with FOCUS online.

But Trump’s re-election is also a final “wake-up call” for the democratic states to tackle the homework that they had sometimes left to the USA in certain areas.

“We will be treated more harshly. We will no longer be able to rest on our laurels when it comes to security, but will have to take care of it ourselves,” says zu Guttenberg. It would have been similar if Harris had won. The fact that Germany now has to “come out of complacency” is “actually good news.” …

According to zu Guttenberg, the designated US president has “two obsessions”. Firstly, punitive tariffs on imports, and secondly, Trump wants to go down in history as a peace president. …

The former minister is also convinced that Trump is keeping a close eye on the collapse of the traffic light coalition. An unstable Germany could be a godsend for him.

“The more we fly apart, the more divided we are within our country, the more his interest is aroused to the point where he says: Okay, they are an easy target for the things I have in mind.”

Essentially Herr Guttenberg, like some others in Europe, sees the reelection of Donald Trump as a wake-up call for Germany and the rest of Europe to arm. Arming is what he meant by, “We will no longer be able to rest on our laurels when it comes to security.”

He also is warning that if Germany does not take quick and bold steps, that Donald Trump will hurt Germany with tariffs, etc.

Other Germans in Europe, such as European Union Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have voiced the view that the reelection of Donald Trump necessitates that Europe unite more in order to be able to deal with the USA (e.g. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/nov/07/european-leaders-struggle-for-show-of-unity-in-wake-of-trump-victory).

As regular readers of this page are aware, I have had my eye on one-time, German Defense Minister Baron Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg since late 2009 as one who could possibly fulfill the role of the final King of the North.
