Park Romney on Mormon History
Mitt Romney (Gage Skidmore, 2011)
A former Mormon and cousin of US presidential candidate Mitt Romney had some comments about his views of LDS history:
The two visions of Mormonism the Romney cousins present could not be more starkly opposed.
Park Romney, 56, is a former Mormon high priest, who turned against the church. On the stump Mitt Romney, 65, has avoided mentioning Mormonism, instead talking generally about his faith, but he has been an active lifelong member of the church…
Park Romney’s criticisms of the church are fundamental.
Along with other ex-Mormons, he questions founder Joseph Smith’s prophecies – for example Smith’s translation of an Egyptian scroll, part of the Mormon book of Abraham, which Egyptologists say is a fraud…
“There’s compelling evidence that the Mormon Church leaders knowingly and wilfully misrepresent the historical truth of their origins and of the Church for the purpose of deceiving their members into a state of mind that renders them exploitable,” says Park. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17487873
While I do not intend to endorse any USA presidential candidate (see Should a Christian Vote?), I, of course, also do not believe that the LDS are somehow the revived remnant of the true church like they claim, and perhaps Mitt Romney believes.
Of course, the same thing applies to the Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seventh-day Adventists, or other Protestants. All should take a closer look at real church history as most simply do not realize that it is only the faithful Church of God that maintains the same basic doctrines from the time of Jesus to present. It is not just the LDS that have a problem here.
A review of early Christianity reveals that the bulk of the early Christians were in Asia Minor and that it was leaders in Asia Minor who often first stood up to many heresies that other churches were more tolerant of. Most would be surprised what the original and faithful early Christians taught and believed when contrasted with what the majority who profess Christ believe today.
