Pope speaks & CGBS attendee published about sex scandals
Pope Francis
Pope Francis made more statements about his church’s sex scandals:
August 29, 2018
VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis lamented Wednesday how Irish church authorities failed to respond to the crimes of sexual abuse, speaking during his first public appearance at the Vatican after bombshell accusations that he himself covered up for an American cardinal’s misdeeds.
Francis presided over his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square and spoke about his weekend trip to Ireland, where the abuse scandal has devastated the Catholic Church’s credibility.
The final day of the trip was overshadowed by release of a document from a retired Holy See diplomat accusing Vatican authorities, including Francis, of covering up for ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick despite knowing for years that he regularly slept with seminarians.
The author of the document — retired Vatican ambassador to the U.S., Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano — said Francis should resign for his complicity in the McCarrick scandal, which has implicated two decades’ worth of U.S. and Vatican church leaders.
Francis referred Wednesday to the Irish culture of cover-up, but he omitted from his remarks a line in his prepared text noting how he had prayed in Ireland for the Virgin Mary to intervene to give the church strength to “firmly pursue truth and justice” to help victims heal.
U.S. bishops, as well as rank-and-file Catholics, have called for an independent investigation to find out who knew about McCarrick’s abuse and when, and how he was able to rise through the ranks even though it was an open secret that he regularly invited seminarians to his New Jersey beach house and into his bed.
Francis last month removed McCarrick as a cardinal and ordered him to live a lifetime of penance and prayer after a U.S. church investigation determined that an allegation he groped a teenage altar boy in the 1970s was credible.
Vigano’s 11-page j’accuse alleges that Francis knew of McCarrick’s penchant for adult seminarians starting in 2013, but rehabilitated him from sanctions that Pope Benedict XVI had allegedly imposed on him in 2009 or 2010. The claims have shaken Francis’ five-year papacy.
There is ample evidence, however, that the Vatican under Benedict and St. John Paul II also covered up the information, and that any reported sanctions Benedict imposed were never enforced since McCarrick travelled widely for the church during those years, including to Rome to meet with Benedict and celebrate Mass with other U.S. bishops at the tomb of St. Peter.
Vigano provided no evidence that Francis had lifted the alleged sanctions, saying only that McCarrick announced after a meeting with the pope that he was going to China.
But he said McCarrick had become a close adviser to Francis, who was seeking to appoint more pastorally-minded bishops to the U.S. church, which he believed had become too ideologically driven by right-wingers. https://www.voanews.com/a/pope-laments-abuse-in-1st-post-bombshell-vatican-appearance/4548858.html
So, obviously Cardinal McCarrick did not keep his vow of celibacy, but apparently that was widely known, but hushed up. People may be surprised to learn that celibacy WAS NOT a biblical requirement for clergy and is actually discouraged in the Bible (see also Was Celibacy Required for Early Bishops or Presbyters?).

This morning, Reginald Killingsley, a former WCG member that regularly attends with the Church of God Big Sandy, sent me the following which he wrote and that was published as a ‘letter to the editor’ yesterday:
Letter: Unanswered questions for Catholic Church
Stories raise questions
The seemingly never-ending stories of sexual abuse and cover-up in the Catholic Church raise a couple of questions I have not seen discussed.
First, were such abuses limited to a handful of countries such as the U.S., Ireland, Chile, and Australia? One imagines that a church culture that permitted such abuses to occur is not constrained by geographic boundaries. So, as the word “catholic” denotes, abuse must undoubtedly have been universal.
In addition, and following from that conclusion, is this scourge peculiar to our times only? Again, it is difficult to avoid the further conclusion that this kind of moral depravity must have afflicted countless innocents in the Catholic Church throughout its history. Of course, we have no written record to buttress that conclusion but that cannot be surprising since it is only in our day that victims have spoken out with any possibility of being heard and believed.
It has been 500 years since Martin Luther sought to purge the Catholic Church of abuses he saw in his day and began the Reformation. How long before the church today comes completely out of denial, repents, and reforms itself?
— Reginald Killingley, Longview
Well, the Church of Rome knows that it should do something bold at this stage.
Pope Francis could resign.
But even if he does not, the Vatican will likely announce policy and/or procedural changes.
Yet, there is no way that the Church of Rome will reform itself as deeply as it should. Nor did Martin Luther advocate sufficient and proper reforms.
Now, regarding scandals in the 21st century, consider (as I posted here before) that the Catholics have a couple of prophecies about it facing scandals:
Ven. Holzhauser (17th century): The Great Monarch will come when the Latin Church is desolated, humiliated, and afflicted with many heresies (Dupont Y. Catholic Prophecy: The Coming Chastisement. TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1973, p. 114).
Nicholas of Fluh (15th century): The Church will be punished because the majority of her members, high and low, will become so perverted. (Dupont, p. 30)
We have seen that many perverted have been associated with the Church of Rome. These pedophile and other sex scandals have humiliated the Church of Rome (“the Latin Church”). So, if the first prediction above is correct, then we are very near the time that the “Great Monarch” will rise up. I believe he will do so this century, and likely within a decade or so.
Also, according to an Eastern Orthodox writer, the “Great Monarch” is also supposed to rise up during the time there are “very impious priests” (Tzima Otto, p. 53; see also The Great Monarch: Biblical and Catholic Prophecies)–which would be consistent with the whole sex scandal issue among the Catholic priesthood.
Many may find it of interest to realize that the Great Monarch that various Eastern and Roman Catholic prophecies look forward to seems remarkably similar to the King of the North Beast power that the Bible warns against. For details, check out the article The Great Monarch: Biblical and Catholic Prophecies. We are getting closer to the time when that Beast will arise. The Great Monarch, for a time, will restore a CHANGED and even more ecumenical version of Eastern and Roman catholicism and many will go for it.
But irrespective of Catholic prophecies, the revelations about the sex scandals and how the Church of Rome has handled many of them is showing major problems with the Church of Rome.
According to Bible prophecy, the Church of the City of Seven Hills/Mountains will be in league with the governments of this world, but then be destroyed:
1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters,2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”3 So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.5 And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.6 I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.7 But the angel said to me, “Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.9 Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. …
12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast.13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. …
15 Then he said to me, “The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.16 And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire.17 For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.18 And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.” (Revelation 17:1-9, 12-13, 15-18)
Despite the sex scandals, there will be some public image changes for the Church of Rome. The Church of Seven Hills will be in league with the Beast power that will rise up.
But eventually it will turn against that church and it will be destroyed.
That will, in essence, be the final reformation of the Church of Rome.
