ROME, FEB. 2, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The subject of Down syndrome has appeared many times in this column, much to do with the fact my son has Trisomy 21. The stories have rarely been cheerful, mostly because the prognosis for the future of people with Trisomy 21 is poor. The abortion rate for those with Down syndrome is even higher in places like Japan. Not only are they “charming,” as Elizabeth Lev put it, most with Down syndrome are also sweet and loving.

Abortion kills an unborn person. And yes, it now intentionally happens more for those who happen to have 47 chromosomes (like those with Down syndrome) than those with 46 (most everyone else). But that does not make it right.

There is a price to pay for sins like abortion.

Unborn humans, including those with Down syndrome, still are people. Abortion is wrong.
