After EU meets, Kurds ask Germany for weapons. Islamic State massacres 80.

After not getting what the weapons they wanted from the USA, the Kurds approached the Germans:

BERLIN—The leader of Iraq’s Kurds appealed to Germany for weapons to help Kurdish fighters battling militants of the Islamic State, and said foreign powers must find a way to cut off the group’s funding.

The European Union on Friday gave a green light to EU governments to supply arms and ammunition to the Kurds if it has the consent of the government in Baghdad.

Germany has shied away from direct involvement in military conflicts for much of the post-war era and a survey conducted for Bild am Sonntag newspaper indicated that almost three quarters of Germans were against shipping weapons to the Kurds.

But Germany’s defense minister has said the government was looking into the possibility of delivering military hardware.

Masoud Barzani, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan, said the Kurds needed more than the humanitarian aid that Germany began sending on Friday to support people forced to flee their homes by the Sunni militant group’s advance.

“We also expect Germany to deliver weapons and ammunition to our army so that we can fight back against the IS terrorists,” Barzani told German magazine Focus. He said they needed German training and what they lacked most were anti-tank weapons.

…Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier held out the possibility of sending more than humanitarian help.

Speaking in Baghdad on his way to the Kurdish regional capital Arbil, he said he would use talks with Barzani on Saturday to find out what more the Kurds needed, and would then decide what Germany could do.

How much (and what) Germany will supply is still an open question.

But the Kurds, and others, are starting to realize that there are alternatives to the USA and Russia when it comes to military support.

Europe is a bigger arms supplier than many realize. France and Germany have the world’s fifth and sixth highest defense budgets (USA is first, followed by China, then Russia, then Saudi Arabia).

Five of the world’s fifteenth largest arms sellers are nations in continental Europe. Germany itself is the world’s fifth largest military arms exporter. European military technology will be a major factor in the coming temporal success of the dreaded Beast power of Revelation (see also European Technology and the Beast of Revelation).

The Islamic State continues its killing spree:

(Reuters) – Islamic State insurgents “massacred” some 80 members of Iraq’s Yazidi minority in a village in the country’s north, a Yazidi lawmaker and two Kurdish officials said on Friday.

“They arrived in vehicles and they started their killing this afternoon,” senior Kurdish official Hoshiyar Zebari told Reuters. “We believe it’s because of their creed: convert or be killed.”

A Yazidi lawmaker and another senior Kurdish official also said the killings had taken place and that the women of the village were kidnapped. …

Yazidi parliamentarian Mahama Khalil said he had spoken to villagers who had survived the attack. They said the killings took place during a one-hour period.

The resident of a nearby village said an Islamic State fighter from the same area gave him details of the bloodshed.

“He told me that the Islamic State had spent five days trying to persuade villagers to convert to Islam and that a long lecture was delivered about the subject today,” said the villager. “He then said the men were gathered and shot dead. The women and girls were probably taken to Tal Afar because that is where the foreign fighters are.”

That account could not be independently confirmed.

Islamic State militants have killed at least 500 members of Iraq’s Yazidi ethnic minority during their offensive in the north, Iraq’s human rights minister told Reuters on Sunday.

The brutality and other actions of the Islamic State are getting governments in Europe and North America reasons to change certain policies. The USA did not want to get involved again in Iraq, yet started to bomb last week. Germany has had a policy of not sending arms into areas of active conflict, but is seriously considering do so at this time.

That being said, there will be other changes coming to Iraq. Eventually, at least parts of its will support the coming King of the South of biblical prophecy (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:2-8). Notice a little bit about a coming confederation:

5 Cush and Put, Lydia and all Arabia, Libya and the people of the covenant land will fall by the sword along with Egypt. (Ezekiel 30:1-5, NIV).

So a confederation will form, Iraq will be part of it, and many of the nations that enter into a confederation with Egypt will suffer. This includes Iraqi peoples and possibly the Kurds.

Why the Kurds? The word translated above as Libya, Puwt, may be referring to some of the peoples of Iran as Puwt was a Persian tribe and the Kurds are an Iranian people with mixed heritage.

Although the Kurds themselves have long wanted independence, they have a history of making many alliances. They may well support a future Arabic-Turkish alliance (Daniel 11:40-43). As well as possibly an alliance that has German-influence (Psalm 83:5-8).

We may be seeing some of the first steps towards such an alliance.
