Boris Johnson takes strong lead in race for next UK leader

LONDON (AP) — Boris Johnson took a commanding lead Thursday in the contest to become Britain’s next prime minister, winning by far the largest share of support in first-round voting by Conservative Party lawmakers.
Johnson, a former foreign secretary and leading Brexit campaigner, secured 114 of the 313 votes cast in the round, which reduced the field of candidates from 10 to seven. His successor as foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, trailed with 43 votes, followed by Environment Secretary Michael Gove with 37.
Johnson thanked supporters and tweeted: “I am delighted to win the first ballot, but we have a long way to go.”
The result exceeded the expectations of Johnson’s team and makes him almost certain to be among the final two candidates who will be put to a vote of 160,000 party members nationwide. The winner will become Conservative leader and British prime minister.
Three candidates were eliminated. Lawmakers Esther McVey, Mark Harper and Andrea Leadsom all failed to reach the threshold of 17 votes needed to get to the next round. …
Johnson vowed Wednesday that as prime minister he would “get Brexit done,” either by renegotiating May’s rejected Brexit deal or by leaving the EU on Oct. 31 without an agreement.

Voting will continue over the following days to whittle the race down to two candidates.
The next ballot is scheduled for Monday when candidates must win the support of 33 Conservative lawmakers.

A UK government led by Boris Johnson could not be dragged through the courts if it refused to pay the country’s multibillion-pound Brexit bill, the EU’s German budget chief has admitted, but Britain’s economy, security and universities would be made to suffer.
Günther Oettinger, European commissioner for the EU’s finances, linked the settling of Britain’s debts as agreed by Theresa May to Brussels’ approach to the prospects of the country retaining any kind of beneficial relationship with the bloc.
Johnson, who remains the clear frontrunner in the race to be the next prime minister, has threatened to hold back on payment of the UK’s financial settlement with the EU, estimated to be around £39bn, claiming the sum could be used as “lubricant” to improve Britain’s bargaining position in trade talks.
The EU’s position is that the British government has already agreed to the settlement and that even in a no-deal scenario, Britain would need to pay both liabilities relating to the existing EU budget, which runs until the end of 2020, and unspent commitments that Britain signed off on as a member state.

Boris Johnson resigned his position as Foreign Minister in Theresa May’s government as he opposed the Brexit deal she had agreed to with the European Union (EU).
The EU does not want to renegotiate its Brexit offer–and that was the one that Boris Johnson was opposed to (see Boris Johnson disses May’s Brexit plan, while PM’s office claims he has no new ideas).
Leaders in the EU were unhappy with Boris Johnson’s appointment as Foreign Minister back in 2016 (see Europe upset about Boris Johnson’s appointment).
It is likely that the EU is less than thrilled with Boris Johnson’s position as the now leading candidate to become the next UK Prime Minister.
In the past, the European Union’s two presidents have said that the EU will not renegotiate a better deal with the UK.
We will see.
The reality is that there still would be some talk of negotiations for a ‘no deal’ Brexit as both the EU and the UK will have to discuss various trade, immigration, and financial matters.
The deal that Theresa May agreed to failed to pass in the UK Parliament numerous times.
This led to her resignation as well as the rise of a new party in the UK, led by anti-EU leader Nigel Farage. With the recent emergence of Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party there is, in some circles, more support for a no-deal Brexit.
US President Donald Trump had suggested that Theresa May take a harder stance in negotiating with the EU related to Brexit, but apparently she felt that she could not really do that (see Theresa May asks for a no later than June Brexit delay; Donald Trump Jr. says she should have listened to his father).
The EU, itself, has long opposed Brexit and will not be pleased with what is considered to be a no-deal, or otherwise somewhat negotiated, Brexit. The EU is also upset with US President Trump for supporting Brexit, pulling out of the Paris climate accords, threatening tariffs, pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal, pressuring on NATO, etc.
One day the European Beast power will arise and take actions that most of those in the USA and UK (as well as Canada) will not consider possible (cf. Daniel 8:24-25, 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).
Getting Boris Johnson as Prime Minister will not save the UK from what is prophesied to come to pass (see also Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel).
A Boris Johnson Prime Ministership will mainly tend to speed-up European resolve to push for something that the current Anglo-American domination that the world has seen for the past two or so centuries.

The UK and USA have further estranged themselves from the EU since that video came out. A Boris Johnson prime ministership would be another step in that direction.
To delay the coming destruction (Daniel 8:24-25, 11:39; Isaiah 17:3-4), the USA and UK need repentance (Hosea 11:3a, 5b-7). Yet that is not expected in this age, and all need the Kingdom of God.
