AP: Hong Kong police make first arrests under new security law

The tweet above is dangerous as rising up against China will not end well for those in Hong Kong who do so.

Arrests have already been made under the new security law for Hong Kong:

Hong Kong police make first arrests under new security law

July 1, 2020

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong police made their first arrests Wednesday under a new national security law imposed a day earlier by China’s central government, detaining at least seven people suspected of violating it during protests by thousands of people.

Police said one man with a Hong Kong independence flag was arrested at a protest in the city’s Causeway Bay shopping district. Police arrested another woman for holding up a sign displaying the British flag and calling for Hong Kong’s independence. Three other women were detained for possessing items advocating independence. Further details were not immediately available.

Hong Kong police said on Facebook that they arrested more than 180 people on various charges, including unlawful assembly, possession of weapons and violating the national security law.

The arrests come as thousands took to the streets Wednesday in an anti-government protest on the 23rd anniversary of Britain’s handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997. For the first time, police banned this year’s annual march. Protesters shouted slogans, lambasted police and held up signs condemning the Chinese government and the new security law.

The law, imposed by China following last year’s anti-government protests in the semi-autonomous territory, makes secessionist, subversive, or terrorist activities illegal, as well as foreign intervention in the city’s internal affairs. Any person taking part in secessionist activities, such as shouting slogans or holding up banners and flags calling for the city’s independence, is violating the law regardless of whether violence is used. https://apnews.com/481e4051462954f6ddc3bb3079f14ad4

July 1, 2020

Hong Kong was facing up to a new reality on Wednesday, after China’s central government imposed a sweeping national security law late the night before that critics say has stripped the city of its autonomy and precious civil and social freedoms, and cements Beijing’s authoritarian rule over the territory.

Hundreds turned out to protest the legislation in the busy shopping district of Causeway Bay but were met with a heavy security presence. Riot police fired pepper spray into the crowd, kettled and dispersed protesters, and deployed water cannons.

During the protest, Hong Kong Police made the first arrest under the new law — a man who was holding a black flag carrying the words “Hong Kong independence,” police said on Twitter.

… people were arrested under the charges of illegal assembly, violating the national security law, obstruction of police, and possession of offensive weaponry, according to police.

The national security law came into effect in Hong Kong in the lead-up to July 1 — the 23rd anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong from British rule to China — and dramatically broadens the powers of local and mainland authorities to investigate, prosecute and punish dissenters.

In vague language, the law criminalizes secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign powers. People convicted of such crimes can face sentences of up to life in prison.

July 1 is traditionally a day of protests in the city but for the first time since handover, police did not give permission to protesters to hold peaceful demonstrations. https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/hong-kong-protests-first-arrest-made-under-new-security-law/ar-BB16bCPq?ocid=ientp

The new security law was approved in China in late May (see China approves Hong Kong National Security Law).

Here are some views of it from some who oppose it:

VOA Cantonese Service reporter Iris Tong talked with three pro-democracy activists about their reaction to the law and the future of Hong Kong.

Tony Chung, 19, Student localism

Chung is the organizer of Student localism, a political organization of mostly middle school students that advocated Hong Kong’s independence. He said the organization would no longer be effective if members risked breaking the law by handing out leaflets and shouting slogans.

“We want to hand over our operations to those members who are abroad,” he said. “They can keep promoting our ideas through online articles and pages.”

Chung thinks the law will foster more political polarization in Hong Kong.

“One group of people will just be more obedient. They understand you can’t speak your mind or have to be extremely careful when expressing your opinions. The other group will resort to extreme force. They will say, ‘Talking is useless,’ and might resort to force. So, I think some armed attack and small conflict can’t be ruled out,” he said.

Ventus Lau, 26, Hong Kong Civil Assembly Team

Lau is the spokesman for the Hong Kong Civil Assembly Team, which supported other civil rights groups in last year’s anti-extradition protests. He said the fact that no one knows the details of the new law is absurd.

“The ridiculous thing is we don’t even know if we have violated the law. For example, if you steal something, you know you have committed a crime and might face arrest. But with the national security law, we don’t know if we have committed a crime, or if any past actions would be subject to this law. We are all guessing here. This is not a law — this is an excuse for the CCP to suppress dissidents,” he said.

Albert Ho, 68, HK Alliance

Ho is vice chairman of HK Alliance, a democratic organization formed in 1989 to support the Tiananmen Square demonstrations in Beijing.

“I don’t need to go into exile, nor do I need to dissolve my organization,” he said. “We have never advocated for Hong Kong independence, and we have always advocated the use of peaceful methods to promote reform. We have never been in favor of using violence to change the status quo.”

He said people must be more flexible to continue their fight. https://www.voanews.com/east-asia-pacific/voa-news-china/hong-kong-activists-react-chinas-national-security-law

So, some expect violent protests, while others hope other means will be effective.

In December 2019, I posted an article titled 20 items to prophetically watch in 2020. Here is something from number 7 of those items:

7. Strife and the Red Horse of War

Notice the following:

3 When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.” 4 Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword. (Revelation 6:3-4)

Somewhat paralleling the ride of the second horseman of Revelation 6:3-4, Jesus warned about wars and disturbances … Notice how the Orthodox Jewish Bible translates the first half of Matthew 24:7:

For there will be an intifada of ethnic group against ethnic group, …

We expect to see more wars, rumors of war, and civil unrest.

We are seeing this.

Intifada is an Arabic word literally meaning, as a noun, “tremor”, “shivering”, “shuddering.” It is derived from an Arabic term nafada meaning “to shake”, “shake off”, “get rid of.” (Intifada. Wikipedia, accessed 06/11/20)

The call for people in Hong Kong to arise is not the solution. Hong Kong simply does not have the physical might, etc. to be able to stop China from asserting influence. The ultimate solution, of course, for Hong Kong and China will be the Kingdom of God.

Although many in Hong Kong want to cast off control from China, that is not going to be successful. Even if there are temporary ‘victories.’

Hong Kong was mentioned in the following video on our Bible News Prophecy YouTube channel:

14:10

Riots and the Red Horse of the Apocalypse

We are seeing riots and protests across the USA, protests and skirmishes in Hong Kong, and another potential intifada with the Palestinians over Israel’s annexation plans. Could any of this be related to the beginning of sorrows Jesus mentioned in Matthew 24? What about rider of the red horse of war of the apocalypse? Is ethic group prophesied to be against ethnic group according to the Orthodox Jewish Bible? Did the red horse begin the ride in the 20th century? What is the relationship of the seals of Revelation 6 and the start of the Great Tribulation? Will a warring ‘Beast’ leader arise in Europe? Might he quell civil unrest? Might he militarily destroy the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada? What about the Islamic nations of the Middle East and North Africa? Will Jesus have the King of the North Beast defeated? After Jesus returns will this be the time when people will not learn war? What about the other seals in the Book of Revelation? Dr. Thiel address these and more in this video.

Here is a link to the video: Riots and the Red Horse of the Apocalypse.

It was only because of a 99 year lease entered into in 1898 with the UK that Hong Kong was separate. During the time of that lease, it was considered a British colony. But that lease ended. While officially, Hong Kong is supposed to be separate until 2047 because of treaty negotiated between the British and the Chinese, it had a security provision which the government of the People’s Republic of China has decided to exercise, but in a manner protesters in Hong Kong did not want.

I have long warned that the situation in Hong Kong would change. People in Hong Kong need to see “the handwriting on the wall” (Daniel 5).

Consider something I posted here related to Hong Kong protests in 2015:

The protesters have asked for more separation of systems than the Chinese government currently prefers, but ultimately Hong Kong will be even more dominated by China. …

Hong Kong, because of its … its apparent prophetic place, will closer align with China … despite what today’s protesters may prefer. (Thiel B. Hong Kong protests continue: What will be the result? COGwriter, February 1, 2015)

China does not want protests and will take steps to get them cleared out if it feels that is its best course of action.

And the following was posted here last Summer:

Hong Kong protesters hope to delay China’s influence, but these protests may achieve the opposite effect.

The time will come, relatively soon, when Hong Kong will have much more control from China. (Thiel B. DW: Hong Kong: Chaos ensues as fresh protests kick off. COGwriter, July 28, 2019)

The “new security law” is essentially the opposite effect of what the protesters wanted.

In December 2019, I posted:

So, ‘legally,’ Hong Kong is supposed to be separate until 2047. I believe that its ‘separation’ will end before then–likely within a dozen years from now.

Hong Kong protesters have asked for more separation of systems than the Chinese government currently prefers, but ultimately Hong Kong will be even more dominated by China. (Thiel B. VOA: Hundreds of Thousands of Protesters Pack Hong Kong Streets; COGwriter: But what about prophecy? COGwriter, December 8, 2019)

Yes, as of today, it should be clear that Hong Kong is even more dominated by China.

Why did I write what I did?

Well, partially because Bible prophecy tells of a coming military alliance between the powers in Asia which would include China and almost assuredly Taiwan and Hong Kong (Revelation 9:13-18; 16:12-16):

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).

The literal translation of the expression ‘the kings of the east’ in Revelation 16:12 is “the kings of the sunrise” and thus this would seem to have to include places like Taiwan, which is east of mainland China as well as a place where the sunrise happens first. And there was no biblical reason to believe that Hong Kong would remain separate from China.

Properly understood biblical prophecies are coming to pass.

And this includes those for places other than China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
