Jobless rate spikes to 14.7%, highest since Great Depression

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. unemployment rate hit 14.7% in April, the highest rate since the Great Depression, as 20.5 million jobs vanished in the worst monthly loss on record. The figures are stark evidence of the damage the coronavirus has done to a now-shattered economy.
The losses, reported by the Labor Department Friday, reflect what has become a severe recession caused by sudden business shutdowns in nearly every industry. Nearly all the job growth achieved during the 11-year recovery from the Great Recession has now been lost in one month. …
The collapse of the job market has occurred with stunning speed. As recently as February, the unemployment rate was a five-decade low of 3.5%, and employers had added jobs for a record 113 months. In March, the unemployment rate was just 4.4%
The jump in the unemployment rate didn’t capture the full devastation wrought by the business shutdowns. The Labor Department said its survey-takers erroneously classified millions of Americans as employed in April even though their employers have closed down. These people should have been classified as on temporary layoff and therefore unemployed. If they had been counted correctly, the unemployment rate would have been nearly 20%, the government said. …
“What I can do is I’ll bring it back,” Trump said. “Those jobs will all be back, and they’ll be back very soon. And next year we’ll have a phenomenal year.”
But economists increasingly worry that it will take years to recover all the jobs lost. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office expects the jobless rate to be 9.5% by the end of 2021.
The government’s report noted that many people who lost jobs in April but didn’t look for another one weren’t even counted in the unemployment rate. Their exit helped drive down the proportion of working-age Americans who were employed in April: It’s now just 51.3%, the lowest proportion on record.
In addition to the millions of newly unemployed, 5.1 million others had their hours reduced in April. That trend, too, means less income and less spending, perpetuating the economic downturn. A measure of what’s called underemployment — which counts the unemployed plus full-time workers who were reduced to part-time work — reached 22.8%, a record high. …
In France, about half the private-sector workforce is on a government paid-leave program whereby they receive up to 84% of their net salary. I read a couple of days ago that 4.2 million Californians had applied for unemployment. Across the USA, around 40 million have lost their jobs in the past couple of months. This is worse than most ‘experts’ were expecting.

Let me add that the ramifications for the long-term of the economy of the USA will be worse than pretty much all the pronouncements that I have heard from experts, politicians, and pundits as they do not seriously consider biblical prophecies, such as Habakkuk 2:6-8 as relevant.
But they are wrong.
Why?
Because the ‘solution’ that the USA has decided to pursue is NOT national repentance (which is what it needs) or the Kingdom of God (which it does not believe in), but in increasing debt.
It improperly believes that it can continue to massively create electronic money to ‘bail out’ businesses, state and local governments, and citizens for what the lockdown and some of its other policies related to COVID-19 have caused.
The Bible says that will end in the destruction of such a heavily indebted nation (Habakkuk 2:6-8).
And Europe?
It is reeling from COVID-19 issues as well.
Yet, overall, experts seem to believe that Germany will fare better than most there. In this case, I tend to agree with the experts as that is consistent with various biblical prophecies (see also Germany in Biblical and Catholic Prophecy).
Today is the 75th anniversary of what is called VE (Victory in Europe) Day. Adolf Hitler’s forces finally surrendered. Could something like Nazism happen again?
Could COVID-19 be some type of trigger for the rise of an Adolf Hitler like figure?

Adolf Hitler rose after a major depression in was affecting Germany.
Consider the following:
A new, highly publicized research paper linking the economic devastation caused by the Spanish flu pandemic to the rise of the Nazi Party suggests that the coronavirus outbreak might lead to another bout of political extremism, particularly in the United States. But an expert on that era of Germany’s history is casting doubt on its findings, saying that the research is “shoddy” and inaccurate.
The study, published Monday by Federal Reserve Bank of New York economist Kristian Blickle and unveiled in the Wall Street Journal, examines the effects of the Spanish flu, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide between 1918 and 1920.

Economic problems in Europe will get people to look for someone to save them.
Adolf Hitler was credited for pulling the German economy out of the Great Depression and restoring German prestige.
The Bible teaches that Europe will reorganize and turn power over to a dictator:
12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)

Boris Johnson, the former Mayor of London, stated that the European Union wanted to be what Adolf Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte tried to create. Duncan Smith agreed. But European Council President Donald Tusk called Johnson’s comments absurd and then stated that the EU was the answer to the problems facing Europe. But what does the Bible teach about the future of Europe? Is European unity the answer or will it usher in something worse than Adolph Hitler? The Bible shows that the coming Beast power will restore European power and wealth, as well as make much of the world wealthy for a time (cf. Revelation 18:3-18).
And what about the coronavirus?
It is helping push aspects of totalitarianism, such as moving away from physical currency and accepting severe governmental restrictions.
The biblical reality is that Europe will NOT stay as it is.
Whether or not it is even called the European Union in the future is not specified in scripture.
COVID-19 has wounded the economies of most nations around the world. This includes the USA and Europe.
While COVID 19 is NOT the End, could it be a sign of The End Of The World As We Know It?
Record unemployment, economic disruptions, and health scares related to COVID-19 are happening.
But you do not need to be fearful. Remember, Jesus said:
