Record 22 million have sought US jobless aid since virus

WASHINGTON (AP) — The wave of layoffs that has engulfed the U.S. economy since the coronavirus struck forced 5.2 million more people to seek unemployment benefits last week, the government reported Thursday.

Roughly 22 million have sought jobless benefits in the past month — easily the worst stretch of U.S. job losses on record. All told, roughly nearly 12 million people are now receiving unemployment checks, roughly matching the peak reached in January 2010, shortly after the Great Recession officially ended.

All businesses deemed nonessential have been closed in nearly every state as the economy has virtually shut down. Deep job losses have been inflicted across nearly every industry. Some economists say the unemployment rate could reach as high as 20% in April, which would be the highest rate since the Great Depression of the 1930s. By comparison, unemployment never topped 10% during the Great Recession.

Layoffs are spreading beyond service industries like hotels, bars and restaurants, which absorbed the brunt of the initial job cuts, into white collar professional occupations, including software programmers, construction workers and sales people.

Collectively, the job cuts could produce unemployment on an epic scale. Up to 50 million jobs are vulnerable to coronavirus-related layoffs, economists say — about one-third of all positions in the United States. https://apnews.com/fb33b19770c945bf19a40456f060e593

The outbreak has infected more than 2 million people worldwide and killed more than 137,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, though the true numbers are believed to be much higher. The death toll in the U.S. reached about 31,000, with over 600,000 confirmed infections.

Fallout from the virus spread in ways both predictable and devastating, from police torching an illicit food market in Zimbabwe, to emergency flights carrying foreign farm workers to Britain and Germany, and protests at U.S. state capitols against job losses.

In France, Amazon suspended operations after a court ruled it wasn’t doing enough to protect its workers in the country. The online retailer has six warehouses in France.

In Britain, a government survey found that a quarter of companies had suspended business. Cargo traffic at Europe’s massive port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands sank 9.3% in the first quarter from the same period a year ago, and its CEO warned of worse to come.

The World Health Organization’s European chief said optimism that the spread of the virus is declining in Italy, Spain and France has been tempered by the knowledge that it is rising or remaining at a high level in Britain, Russia and Turkey. …

“The storm clouds of this pandemic still hang heavily over the European region,” Dr. Hans Kluge said.

On Wednesday, the U.S. reported that American industrial output shriveled in March, registering its biggest decline since the nation demobilized in 1946 at the end of World War II. Retail sales fell by an unprecedented 8.7%, with April expected to be far worse.

The International Monetary Fund said fallout from what it calls the “Great Lockdown” will be the most devastating since the Depression. …

In the U.S., thousands came out in Michigan and Oklahoma to protest the lockdowns they say have destroyed livelihoods.

In Michigan, some were masked and armed with rifles, but many unmasked people defied stay-at-home orders and jammed nearly shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the Capitol building in Lansing. Increased unemployment means decreased productivity, increased government spending, dissatisfaction, and increased government debt.

Worst Recession in 150 Years

With his collaborator, Carmen Reinhart and others, he has shown that debt-to-GDP ratios greater than 90% negate the Keynesian multiplier through behavioral response functions.

At low debt ratios, a dollar borrowed and a dollar spent can produce $1.20 of GDP. But at high ratios, a dollar borrowed and a dollar spent will produce only $0.90 of GDP.

This is the reality behind the phrase “You can’t borrow your way out of a debt crisis.” It’s true.

Meanwhile, the U.S. debt-to-GDP ratio was about 105% even before the crisis. It’s only going higher. We’re just digging a deeper hole for ourselves.

So when Ken Rogoff talks (or writes), I listen. In his latest article, Rogoff offers a dire forecast for the recovery from the New Depression resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

He writes, “The short-term collapse… now underway already seems likely to rival or exceed that of any recession in the last 150 years.”

That obviously includes the Great Depression and many other economic crises. …

Get Ready for Social Disorder …

An economic breakdown is more than just economic. It leads quickly to a social breakdown that involves looting, random violence, fraud and decadent behavior.

The Roaring ’20s in the U.S. (with Al Capone and Champagne baths) and Weimar Germany (with riots and cabaret) are good examples.

Looting, burglary and violence in the midst of a state of emergency are the shape of things to come.

The veneer of civilization is paper-thin and easily torn. Most people don’t realize how fragile it is. But they’re going to learn that lesson, I’m afraid.

The economic mishandling of COVID-19 by various governments is causing many problems.

Now, one of the major steps that the US government is doing related to COVID-19 is to massively increase debt, since the US Treasury is basically debt notes–hence any increased federal government spending increases debt. It has been estimated that between the Federal government and US Federal Reserve that the US expects to print another $10 trillion in debt (see Trump cutting off WHO funding, Germany, EU, and parts of the world upset; $10.5 trillion added to US debt?).

I have repeatedly warned that under Donald Trump, the USA would increase debt.

Furthermore, number 11 of my list of 20 items to prophetically watch in 2020 was the following:

US debt will increase in 2020. The US is moving more and more towards insolvency.

According to the US Treasury, the day before Donald Trump became US President, the debt of the USA as of 01/19/2017 was $19,944,429,217,106.77 (https://treasurydirect.gov/NP/debt/current).

According to the US Treasury, the debt of the USA as of 04/14/2020 was $24,301,778,443,949.21 (https://treasurydirect.gov/NP/debt/current).

Now, perhaps it should be pointed out that the Barack Obama Administration also vastly increased US debt as it was a total of $10,628,881,485,510.23 the day before Barack Obama became US President.

Yes, the debt is rising at a very dangerous level (cf. Habakkuk 2:2-8).

What about social disorder? Here is something from my list of 20 items to prophetically watch in 2020:

7. Strife … We expect to see …. civil unrest.

Unemployment, economic desperation, business closures, government policies, and fear all can be factors in fomenting civil unrest.

Now, is more civil unrest and/or civil war going to hit the USA?

Yes.

The Bible prophesies “There shall be terror within” (Deuteronomy 32:25).

Consider the following from Jesus related to what has been happening in the USA:

25 Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. (Matthew 12:25)

17 Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls. (Luke 11:17)

Former US President Abraham Lincoln cited one of these scriptures in a famous speech he gave prior to becoming USA president. The situation worsened and the American civil war began not too long afterwards.

Increasingly, there is a cultural divide between those who profess some type of morality based upon scripture and those that have decided that political issues matter more than moral ones. Many are outraged about matters such as homosexual marriage and abortion, while others are outraged that everyone will not support homosexual marriage and abortion. And then enter the policies related to COVID-19.

Increasingly, the political parties are becoming more polarized. While politicians were always partisan, there is less they seem willing to do for the ‘good of the country’ together. And when they do seem to agree on something, it tends to increase the debt of the USA, which according to biblical prophecies like Habakkuk 2:6-8, will mean the end of the USA.

Various ones in the media have been fanning the flames of strife and division, and are expected to fan them more.

The USA is not exempt from falling, and Jesus taught that “a house divided against a house falls” (Luke 11:17).

Ultimately, the USA will fall.

Increased government spending and debt is not the solution. Only national repentance can change the direction and that is not anticipated.

But personal repentance is possible and the ultimately solution to what is happening in the world is the coming Kingdom of God.
