Prince Charles to be next Commonwealth head

The Prince of Wales will be the next head of the Commonwealth, the BBC understands.

The Queen had said it was her “sincere wish” that Prince Charles would succeed her in the role “one day”.

Leaders of the Commonwealth have been discussing the issue at a meeting behind closed doors at Windsor Castle.

The non-hereditary role would not have automatically passed to Prince Charles, with some suggestions it might rotate among the 53 leaders.

The BBC’s diplomatic correspondent James Landale said a source had told the BBC that Commonwealth leaders had agreed the appointment.

Prince Charles is the oldest son of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Commonwealth is bigger than many realize, though less influential than the British Empire was in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

By 1913, the British Empire held sway over 412 million people, 23% of the world population at the time, and by 1920, it covered 35,500,000 km² (13,700,000 sq mi), 24% of the Earth’s total land area.

As a result, its political, legal, linguistic and cultural legacy is widespread. At the peak of its power, the phrase “the empire on which the sun never sets” was often used to describe the British Empire, because its expanse around the globe meant that the sun was always shining on at least one of its territories. The Commonwealth covers more than 29,958,050 km² (11,566,870 sq mi), equivalent to 20% of the world’s land area and spans all six inhabited continents. With an estimated population of 2.419 billion people, nearly a third of the world population, the Commonwealth in 2014 produced a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of $10.45 trillion, representing 14% of the gross world product when measured nominally and 17% of the gross world product when measured in purchasing power parity (PPP). Former colonial territories such as India, Singapore and Hong Kong could be embraced as part of an Anglosphere constellation, enabling Britain to exploit its past to strike new trade deals with the markets of the future, proponents argued. By the time of the EU referendum, these growing free-trade markets were regularly offered as a ready alternative to “declining” Europe.

This need to rejuvenate the Commonwealth as a trading bloc, a point referenced by the Queen in her opening address, led to an effort to persuade India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, to end a decade of indifference to the Commonwealth and personally attend the summit.

The UK seems to hope that the Commonwealth might help its trade post-Brexit, but notice the following:

The 53 nations of the Commonwealth account for just 9% of the UK’s global trade whereas the EU takes up 43%. https://www.standard.co.uk/business/carl-mortished-commonwealth-trade-is-not-a-rational-solution-to-brexit-a3819011.html

While the Commonwealth is large on paper, the amount of trade between its members is not expected to fill the gap in the event that Brexit negotiations result in a massive drop in trade between the UK and EU.

Perhaps it should be mentioned that last year, the idea of the USA becoming an ‘associate member’ of the Commonwealth was floated (see USA to join Britain’s Commonwealth?).

Whether the USA does or does not go in that direction, I have long expected that the USA would get closer together with the UK, Australia, and New Zealand on trade and other matters.

Notice something I posted back in 2008:

Negotiations will continue and some type of loose agreements will happen. In the spirit of accommodation and personal interest, many of the “standards” of the European Union will be adopted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as by nearly all of the countries of the world. The Arab nations will most likely agree with many of the standards as they seem to be destined to form a brief end-time alliance with the Europeans (The Arab World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy).

However, over time, it will become increasingly clear that the British will be in more agreement with the Canadians and Americans and that the European Union in more agreement with the Mexicans than the EU will have with the English-speaking nations.

Trade wars and/or serious trade disputes will most likely arise.

The Brits will ultimately decide that they are more supportive of the Americans and Canadians. They will be so much more supportive that they will end up in a trading agreement with them (with the Australians and New Zealanders probably also becoming part of that agreement).

The EU will decide that Mexico and the rest of Latin America are in more agreement with it and thus make some type of serious trading agreement with most (or all) of Latin America. If the USA does become part of the Commonwealth, that would be consistent with what I wrote over a decade ago. I can see how UK Prime Minister Theresa May and US President Donald Trump could find this arrangement quite politically advantageous. Having the USA cooperate more with the UK (whether or not as any type of member in the Commonwealth) will also send a signal to the Europeans that the USA would prefer to focus on the ostracized UK and not on the EU.

This will continue to be the case, though there will still be cooperation between the USA and Europe until the Europeans actually invade the USA and UK–which will come to pass according to biblical prophecies (e.g. Daniel 8:24-25; 11:39; watch also Do these 7 prophesies point to the end of the USA?).

As far as Prince Charles goes, he has been around a long time and is considered knowledgeable about many issues facing the UK and the Commonwealth. However, he has not shown much understanding of biblical prophecies, and this may lead him to not take steps that could prolong the existence of the UK.
