U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of the northeastern state of Vermont said he will seek the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.

Sanders revealed his plans in interviews with the Associated Press and USA Today. He will hold a press conference Thursday to further outline his plans.

The 73-year-old, self-described socialist is a registered independent, but has been part of the Senate Democratic caucus since he was first elected in 2006.

Along with Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, Sanders has become a favorite in the Democratic Party’s emerging left wing for his stands on such issues as alleviating income inequality, strengthening Social Security, imposing tougher regulations on Wall Street and opposition to free trade deals, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership currently being negotiated by President Barack Obama.

Sanders is considered a longshot against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the only other declared candidate for the 2016 Democratic nomination, but his entry into the race could force Clinton to adopt views similar to those of Sanders.

Hillary Clinton has her first official competitor for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination now that Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has formally declared his bid for the White House.

Sanders, 73, is the oldest declared candidate thus far this cycle…

Here are five things to know about Bernie Sanders:

1. He’s not officially a Democrat: Sanders caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate, and he’s preparing to jump into the 2016 race as a Democrat, but he’s not officially a member of the Democratic Party.

2. He’s trying to pull Democrats to the left: Sanders is one of the most liberal members of the U.S. Senate, and he’s staked out numerous positions over the years that are considerably more progressive than those embraced by more mainstream Democrats. …

4. He’s “not a spoiler”: Sanders has been saying that if he runs for the White House, it won’t be to run a “futile” campaign that he can’t actually win.

“If I run, I want to run to win,” he has said. “I will not be a spoiler…There are ways to do this, but let me make it very clear. I will not be a spoiler and elect some Republican.”

Sanders has also promised he wouldn’t run any negative campaign ads against Hillary Clinton. …

Mr. Sanders, who embraces his reputation for being gruff, abrupt and honest, promises to be bold. Recalling that he has defeated Democrats and Republicans with far greater financial resources in his long career, Mr. Sanders suggested that his campaign should not be taken lightly.

Sanders is a social liberal, supporting the homosexual agenda for decades as well as the pro-abortion agenda.

None of the announced candidates for the US presidency will fix the moral problems of that nation. And many, such as Bernie Sanders, have already embraced moral positions in direct opposition to the Bible.

The USA needs national repentance, otherwise it is doomed. It is almost impossible to believe that the next USA president would call for meaningful repentance before the USA is hit with more massive problems. The USA needs the return of Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God.
