China’s Is Quietly Rewriting Rules That Run the World

“Economic nationalism is about to disappear. And technical nationalism has disappeared!”

So declared Olle Sturen in 1969. At the time, he headed the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an institution that created the intermodal freight container (known as the twenty-foot equivalent unit), those ubiquitous metal boxes that utterly transformed global trade. A Swede who championed China’s entry into his Geneva-based organization in the 1970s, Sturen had an optimistic view of how the ISO’s work would bring the world together. It’s unlikely he would have envisioned how those standards would instead become a geo-strategic battleground between China and the West.

Standards are vital, as electrical engineers realized in the late 1800s. …

But standards-setting remains an arena where the act of writing the rules can be an opportunity to quietly confer tremendous power, and profit, on the author. Enter China. …

Beijing conceives of standard-setting as a tool for moving its manufacturing up the global value chain, and building its influence abroad. This was laid out in a leadership document dubbed China Standards 2035, released late last year.

On the domestic front, “the idea is to set technical standards high, essentially forcing manufacturers to upgrade their processes whether they want to or not,” Matt Sheehan, Marjory Blumenthal and Michael Nelson of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace wrote. …

China’s plans also call for boosting its efforts internationally. One part of that is via the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). If a member nation—Ethiopia or Indonesia, say—approves a rail project under the BRI, it will hardly be able to buy replacement signaling gear from a European provider that uses a different standard. …

Back in 2006, the ISO rejected a Chinese Wi-Fi encryption standard amid concerns there were no guarantees that WAPI, as it was known, didn’t allow backdoor access to encrypted material. …

While China would like to set the standards for the entire world, its ambitions are not consistent with biblical prophecies which point to Europe (cf. Revelation 18) dominating world trade for a time.

Europe is already setting many standards for the world with ISO.

Furthermore, the Europeans have long wanted the world to adopt their standards. Here is some information from the official website of the European Committee for Standardization (also known as the Comité Européen de Normalisation):

European Standards are a key component of the Single European Market. Although rather technical and mostly unknown to the public and media, they represent one of the most important issues for businesses. Swift, which operates the global financial messaging service by the same name, on Thursday (Oct. 27) announced its decision to delay the migration to a new messaging standard known as ISO 20022.

The update to the Swift system for cross-border payments and reporting (CBPR+) is already used by many organizations which have been able to exchange ISO 20022 messages on an opt-in basis since August.

The delay to a full migration comes days after the European Central Bank (ECB) announced its own delay of four months for the eurosystem to transition to ISO 20022.

In light of the ECB announcement and requests from the global community of banks and securities exchanges that rely on the Swift system, the Belgian organization decided to align its own update with changes to the eurosystem for the sake of continuity. It is not expected that in matters of digital technology, particularly involving finance, that China will set the standards. While Swift is delaying its implementation of an ISO standard, notice that it will still implement it.

Long-term readers should not find resistance to EU standards as a surprise. Notice a post from 2008:

In the spirit of accommodation and personal interest, many of the “standards” of the European Union will be adopted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as by nearly all of the countries of the world. The Arab nations will most likely agree with many of the standards as they seem to be destined to form a brief end-time alliance with the Europeans (The Arab World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy).

However, over time, it will become increasingly clear that the British will be in more agreement with the Canadians and Americans and that the European Union in more agreement with the Mexicans than the EU will have with the English-speaking nations.

Trade wars and/or serious trade disputes will most likely arise.

The Brits will ultimately decide that they are more supportive of the Americans and Canadians. They will be so much more supportive that they will end up in a trading agreement with them (with the Australians and New Zealanders probably also becoming part of that agreement).

The EU will decide that Mexico and the rest of Latin America are in more agreement with it and thus make some type of serious trading agreement with most (or all) of Latin America. The Vatican will also have influence here as Latin America is highly Roman Catholic.

As far as Europe and Mexico go, they made a trade deal. As far as most of Latin America, that happened (see EU’s Juncker essentially verified accuracy of 2008 COGwriter prediction on trade). And while the USA and Canada have adopted many EU standards, the British are stating that they do not wish to agree with all EU standards.

Despite resistance from China and others, Europe is in the process of rising up as the prophesied Babylon to dominate trade.

While ‘Babylon’ will not fully reign this year or next, steps are occurring that are pushing Europe to dominate trade.
