US jobless claims soar past 30 million; Europe reeling also

Bleak new figures Thursday underscored the worldwide economic pain inflicted by the coronavirus: The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose past a staggering 30 million, while Europe’s economies are in a record slide.

The statistics are likely to turn up the pressure on politicians to ease the lockdowns that have closed factories and other businesses.

In the United States, government figures showed that 3.8 million laid-off workers applied for jobless benefits last week, raising the total to about 30.3 million in the six weeks since the outbreak took hold.

The layoffs amount to 1 in 6 American workers and encompass more people than the entire population of Texas. Some economists say that when the unemployment rate for April comes out next week, it could be as high as 20% — a figure not seen since the Depression of the 1930s, when joblessness peaked at 25%.

And the number of job losses could be even higher than the unemployment claims would suggest, because some people did not apply and others couldn’t get through to their states’ overwhelmed systems. A poll by two economists found that the U.S. may have lost 34 million jobs.

“This is the saddest day for the global economy we have ever seen” in the 50 years that economists at High Frequency Economics have been following economic data, they wrote in a report.

The virus has killed more than 220,000 people worldwide, including 61,000 in the U.S., according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Confirmed infections globally topped 3.2 million, including 1 million in the U.S., but the true numbers are believed to be much higher because of limited testing, differences in counting the dead and concealment by some governments. …

There was also bleak new data in Europe, where more than 130,000 people with the virus have died. The economy in the 19 countries using the euro shrank 3.8% in the first quarter of the year, the biggest contraction since the eurozone countries began keeping joint statistics in 1995. …

This week, the U.S. estimated that its economy shrank at a 4.8% annual rate in the first three months of the year, the sharpest quarterly drop since the 2008 financial crisis. But that barely captures the enormity of the downturn, because the lockdowns were not imposed until late March.

The current quarter is expected to be much worse, with a staggering 40% drop projected.

Across the U.S., many governors have taken tentative steps to begin reopening their economies. But surveys show that a large majority of Americans remain wary of returning to shopping, traveling and other normal economic activity. https://apnews.com/5abd454eb3d36f583aafb58892cb1fc4

There’s only one funder-of-first-and-last-resort: the Federal Reserve.

Voodoo Money Magic

It’s a pity. But the Fed can’t print jobs. Or cars. Or houses. Or carrots. Or the “purple drank” so beloved in Baltimore’s poor neighborhoods. It can’t print chocolate cake, frappuccinos, sparkling water, love affairs, marriages, children … it can’t print careers … or piano lessons … or summer vacations … or trips to the mall. All it can print is what it calls “money.” …

This is the voodoo magic that the feds are pretending will “stimulate” the economy and replace the losses from their lockdown approach to the C-virus.

In the last six weeks, the Fed has added $2.26 trillion. That’s the same as Britain’s GDP. And Goldman Sachs says the U.S. is on track to run deficits of $6 trillion over the next two years. That’s more than the GDPs of Germany or Japan.

Nowhere in the world is there $6 trillion … or even $1 trillion … waiting to fund the government’s big-spending whirligig.

Printing money like that by individuals is called counterfeiting. One of the reasons that it is a crime is that it dilutes the value of the currency and adds nothing productive. Well, that is something that the US Federal Reserve “legally” does.

Responding to a question on financial system stability, Yellen said post-crisis regulations (and $2.5 trillion in excess reserves which just happen to be fungible and give the banks the impression that they are safe) had made financial institutions much “safer and sounder.”

“Will I say there will never, ever be another financial crisis? No, probably that would be going too far. But I do think we’re much safer and I hope that it will not be in our lifetimes and I don’t believe it will.”

Some were quick to compare this statement to Neville Chamberlain infamous – and very, very wrong – 1938 prediction of “peace in our time.”

Others drew comparisons to a similar bold prediction by Ben Bernanke, who in 2014 predicted during one of his $250,000/hour speeches that “rates would not normalize during my lifetime.”

We are NOT much safer. While it is possible that Janet Yellen will die before the start of the Great Tribulation, her implication is that the Federal Reserve knows enough now and has enough financial controls to prevent financial crises for at least the next sixteen years (I said sixteen years because the normal life expectancy for a 70 year old white female in the USA is 16.4 additional years per http://life-span.healthgrove.com/l/71/70). But if she meant her audience, then it may be she is asserting that she does not believe a financial crisis can happen for several decades. This is an arrogant belief.

The Bible teaches:

18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)

It is prideful arrogance that gets humans to think that they can essentially completely control the economy. They cannot. Weather, political events, diseases, wars, morality, technology, and other factors play a role.

Plus, there is also the matter of debt accumulation by the USA and biblical prophecy. …

Irrespective of what one thinks of Janet Yellen or Donald Trump, neither can stop weather problems, earthquakes, or the prophecies in Matthew 24:4-8 that will lead up to the time of the Great Tribulation. COVID-19 is a disease, and it is greatly impacting the US economy.

There is also the matter of debt accumulation by the USA and biblical prophecy.

Here is an end-time prophecy given to the prophet Habakkuk by God over 2600 years ago:

The USA is the most indebted nation in the history of humanity and those in it should try to understand this prophecy. Various programs by its federal government and the Federal Reserve are increasing “pledges” and other forms of debt. Perhaps it should be noted that the United Kingdom seems to have the second highest amount of total debt (about 1/2 that of the USA).

The Anglo-American world order will come to an end. Accumulation of debt will one day be a financial crisis beyond what Janet Yellen and Jerome Powell would consider possible.

Those who think the current world order with the USA’s dollar on top will last several decades are in error.

Those who will believe the Bible will take the words that God spoke to the prophet Habakkuk seriously.

Do not believe that there will not be anymore financial crises.

There will be.

Repentance is needed. The USA and its Anglo-Saxon allies will not last to the end of this century (watch also End of the Anglo-American Order).
