Leading Brexit analyst Charles Grant and former UK ambassador Ivan Rogers – both of whom saw Brexit on the horizon long before most commentators considered it possible – have spoken of the inevitable trade-offs between European market access and economic sovereignty that the UK must now finally confront.
For the EU, the key issue is alignment.
The greater the extent to which the UK agrees to abide by EU rules, the more it accepts an economic and regulatory ‘level playing field’, the less obstruction there will be to UK companies wishing to do business in the European Union.
The Commission has been explicit about its fear of the UK engaging in economic ‘dumping’ after Brexit; it worries that the UK will tolerate lower standards in everything from food hygiene to employment protection to climate change policy in order to gain competitive advantage over EU member states – a competitive advantage the UK is likely, in the commission’s view, desperately to seek given its newly-exposed position outside the trading bloc. https://euobserver.com/opinion/147485

Downing Street’s hopes of a Canada-style trade deal with the EU have been dealt a further blow after a senior adviser to Brussels’ chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, said the bloc’s relationship with the North American country was a “different ball game”. …
Barnier said the UK could not have the same trade deal with the EU as Canada. He said the EU was ready to offer an “ambitious partnership” with the UK, but he said its “particular proximity” meant it would be different. …
Canada’s deal with the EU, which took seven years to negotiate, eliminates most import tariffs on goods but not all. It also increases quotas – the amount of a product that can be exported without extra charges – but does not remove them entirely.
The UK is in a transition period, after leaving the EU on 31 January, and has until the end of the year to hammer out a trade deal with Brussels. The European Union will demand that Britain gives a collection of ancient marble sculptures back to Greece as part of a post-Brexit trade deal.

Anyone who believes the EU has a big advantage in the pending trade talks with the UK needs to wake up to reality.
The ‘Whole Point’ of Brexit is Undermined if UK Continues to Follow EU Rules, says David Frost, the UK’s chief negotiator.

Germany is in recession now. The Greens are not helping, nor diesel, nor is the coronavirus.
Factor in huge exports tariffs if there is no deal at all, and Germany’s already troubled export machine will collapse.

The EU wants to get the world to accept its rules. Because of that, do not expect it to ‘fold’ much. The EU will risk economic pain for its objectives, which includes getting more of the world to accept its standards as well as to send a message that it will punish any nation that wants to leave its union.
As far as regarding standards goes, a couple of days ago, a reader sent me a link to the following:
EU industry commissioner Thierry Breton said on Monday it was for Facebook to adapt to Europe’s standards, not the other way round, as he criticized the U.S. social media giant’s proposed internet rules as insufficient.
The blunt comments came after a short meeting with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and two days before Breton is due to present the first of a raft of rules to rein in U.S. tech giants and state-aided Chinese companies.
“It’s not for us to adapt to this company, it’s for this company to adapt to us,” Breton, a former CEO at French telecoms provider Orange and French technology company Atos, told reporters after the meeting.

The European Commission on Wednesday unveiled its plans for the future of artificial intelligence in the bloc. The EU is eager to take advantage of the burgeoning technology sector, which has so far been largely dominated by China and the United States.
The new strategy aims to stimulate and regulate the development of artificial intelligence in the EU with funding of €20 billion per year for the next decade.

The EU wants to dominate tech. It also wants the world to adopt its standards, and that includes the UK.

Billionaire Elon Musk declared he was worried that artificial intelligence (AI) may lead to the rise of an “immortal dictator,” a “godlike” entity that could take over the world.
