CBS and Jesus on: ‘Why you shouldn’t worry about stocks slumping’

There have been a lot of negative and other gyrations in the stock market so far this month. Here is something from this morning:

Dow Futures Tumble Back Below Friday’s Highs

After a modest gap up opening on Sunday evening, and a sudden mysterious panic-bid as Europe opened, US equity futures are now tumbling, back below Friday’s highs, in what appears to be a delayed reaction to the renewed spike in Treasury yields. https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-02-12/dow-futures-tumble-back-below-fridays-highs

Stock markets go up and down. So more changes will happen.

Taking stock

For one, most Americans don’t own many — or any — stocks. Roughly 84 percent of the market’s value is owned by the wealthiest 10 percent of income earners, …

Then there’s what seems to be the main catalyst for the market plunge — investor concerns that accelerating wage growth will lead to higher inflation and spur the Federal Reserve to jack up interest rates. …

So, according to this report from CBS, do not worry as it is mainly other people who are losing money and interest rates are expected to rise.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is proposing a $4 trillion-plus budget for next year that projects a $1 trillion or so federal deficit and — unlike the plan he released last year — never comes close to promising a balanced federal ledger even after 10 years.

Increased interest rates and increased debt will one day be a factor in the destruction of the USA (cf. Habakkuk 2:6-8).

Of course, despite what CBS implied about the wealthy in the other article, people who need to sell stocks now, like perhaps some retirees, may be hurt by the recent drops.

Jesus taught:

19 … ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 19:19)

He did not say to limit our love to those with less wealth than others.

Now, personally, I do not worry about the stock market gyrations. But I do have sympathy for people who have been losing money in it, whether or not they have much wealth.

Part of the reason I do not worry about the stock market is because of what Jesus taught. Notice His words:

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;

20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.

23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;

29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:33)

While Jesus obviously did not directly mention the stock markets of the 21st century, the principles He laid out are still the same.

Jesus taught that our focus in this life should not be to mainly accumulate what looks like wealth, as that is subject to perish.

Jesus taught that His real followers do not need to worry about their physical requirements as God knows what is needed.

Jesus taught that His followers are to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then God will provide.

Jesus taught that worry for the future is not what we are to do. We are to live each day as God wants us to as we also look forward to the coming Kingdom of God.

Jesus also taught the following:

16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.

17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’

18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.

19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ‘

20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

22 Then He said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.

23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.

24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds?

25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

26 If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest?

27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

28 If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?

32 Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (Luke 12:16-32)

Christians are to be rich towards God.

If you truly, seek first the Kingdom of God, then God will provide for His little flock.

God will do this irrespective of stock market gyrations.
