China is increasing its military spending:

China’s defense spending will increase by 10 percent this year, the latest double-digit increase for the world’s largest standing military.

The figure announced Wednesday by National People’s Congress spokeswoman Fu Ying means China’s officially declared military budget would amount to about $145 billion in 2015.

The official figure will be released Thursday in a report by the largely ceremonial parliament, Fu said at a news conference.

The increase would actually represent a drop from last year, when military spending increased by 12.2 percent. But it would be the fifth straight year that the defense budget has increased by double digits.

Many analysts have long suspected China spends much more on defense than it officially declares, both because of a lack of transparency and other factors such as corruption.

Washington and its allies accuse China of using its rising military strength to bully neighbors in the East and South China Seas with which Beijing has territorial disputes.

Beijing has rejected the accusation, saying it is only trying to upgrade equipment and expand defensive capabilities for its military, which has 2.3 million members.

“Compared with other powers, China has been taking a tougher road in its military modernization because we have to depend on ourselves for the research and development of most of our military equipment and a lot have to be started from the very basic level,” Fu said. “Fundamentally speaking, China’s defense policy is defensive in nature. This is clearly defined in the constitution. We will not easily change this direction and principle.”

Many of China’s neighbors remain unconvinced, and have also ramped up spending. Japan this year increased its military budget by 2.8 percent to a record $42 billion. It is not only the Asians that do not believe that China has territorial and other ambitions beyond being purely defensive.

Under the direction of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the USA developed its ‘pivot strategy’ which basically meant it would move away from protecting Europe as much to expending more military resources to Asia, primarily to deal with China.

From a prophetic standpoint what this increased spending by China likely means is that the USA will conclude that it must continue its policy to relocate military resources away from other potential threats and move them to dealing with the potential threat from China.

Yet, as the USA continues to make cuts in future military programs and defense budgets, it will not be able to deal with threats it will face from other areas. USA generals have already basically said that the USA is losing its ability (or has already lost it) to fight two large scale wars at the same time.

So what will the USA do?

As I have written before, the USA will likely decide that it can/must further trust the Europeans. It will encourage Europe to develop more of its own military capabilities, as well as share more of its military technology with Europe.

It is clear that, according to Bible prophecy, China will have an end-time militaristic role, but is not destined to rule the world either economically nor militarily. And, according to Bible prophecy, there will be some type of confederation of the “kings of the sunrise,” translated as “kings from the east” (Revelation 16:12-16).

But that does not happen until well after the start of the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7), which coincides with the start of the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21).

While China does and will have a certain amount of military power, it will not be the primary power that will takeover the USA (see Is China THE Threat to the United States of America?). The Bible is clear that the nation with the ‘strongest fortresses’ will be taken over by a European power (Daniel 11:39), biblically referred to as the King of the North (Daniel 11:40). And that is not China.

While Australia and New Zealand are likely pleased that the USA will place more greater military focus to the Asia-Pacific region, the reality is that this will not last indefinitely.

Some of the USA’s Anglo-Saxon allies like Australia and New Zealand may end up being dominated by China, Japan, and/or other Asians. The USA’s pivot towards Asia will not prevent what is going to happen.
