COGaIC’s David Hulme, FAO, and Bible on ‘Food Insecurity’

The latest edition of COGaIC’s Vision has the following by David Hulme:

Several events scheduled for 2014–15 may make a significant difference to life in Europe and around the world. … the 2015 World Expo takes place in Milan from May to October. Its theme, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” highlights the ongoing issues of food security and sustainability: For every malnourished person in the world (868 million), there are two who are obese or overweight (1.5 billion); 36 million die each year from lack of food and 29 million from too much food. Further, about a third of all food produced is wasted (1.3 billion tons), and over a third of all grain production is earmarked for animal fodder and biofuels. As has been said, we are feeding animals and cars, not the people who need food. The imbalance between what we put back into the earth and what we take out means that currently we need one and a half planet Earths to sustain ourselves. By 2050, at present levels we will need three Earths to continue. The purpose of the Milan Expo is to alert us to these facts and to issue a protocol, an international agreement by which nations can begin to reverse these trends. …

At Vision, we support individual and collective efforts to get back to and to live within the limits imposed by the biosphere, to care for the earth and preserve its diversity—“to tend and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). That said, underlying these commitments, we recognize that there must be alignment with the profound moral code that also says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which supports sustainable agriculture, says there are several truths that cannot be denied, or ignored. …

“As population is on the rise, food consumption patterns are destined to follow the same upward trend,” the group notes on its website.

“Food production will need to increase by at least 70 percent to meet the demands of this growing population by 2050,” FAO continues. “Studies show that climate change is likely to reduce food productivity, its production stability and incomes in some areas that already have high levels of food insecurity.” …

There’s also the controversial issue of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, that supporters say can help feed a growing global population by creating food crops with greater yields and more resistance to disease. Neither the article by David Hulme nor the one by Bruce Kennedy mentioned prophesied famines or related scriptures, so this post will.

The Bible specifically warns of food shortages and related problems. Nearly 2000 years ago, Jesus taught:

7…And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8)

We seem to be in the time Jesus called “the beginning of sorrows.” Notice a message related to the third horseman of Revelation:

5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” (Revelation 6:5-6)

Food inflation is prophesied. Not only in the Bible, but now also in the news. Will food problems cause people to turn to God?

The sorrows and troubles are just beginning and will get much worse. Hopefully, people will wake up.

As far as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the food supply go, while many see GMOs as the solution to food insecurity, the reality is that relying on them puts the food supply at much greater risk of crop failure and pestilences of various types.

Following the lead of some in the USA, China is now launching a campaign to counter information opposed to GMOs:

(Reuters) – China’s government has kicked off a media campaign in support of genetically modified crops, as it battles a wave of negative publicity over a technology it hopes will play a major role in boosting its food security.

The agriculture ministry earlier this week announced it would try to educate the public on GMO via TV, newspapers and the Internet.

It hopes to stifle anti-GMO sentiment that has gathered momentum in the wake of incidents such as reports that genetically-modified rice had been illegally sold at a supermarket in the centre of the country.

GMOs Seem to Go Against the Creation

GMOs are NOT the solution and go against certain scriptures.

When God created everything in Genesis 1, He said everything He made was good:

31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. (Genesis 1:31)

Notice how God made the creation:

11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:11-12)

20 Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” 21 So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” (Genesis 1:20-22)

24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:24-25)

GMOs are about stopping life from reproducing after its own kind. This clearly violates Genesis 1:22. But that is what GMOs are all about.

The Bible warns:

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (1 Timothy 6:10)

The production of GMO crops places massive amounts of the food supply at risk for destruction. While in nature, there is variety of crops, with GMO-crops there is a uniformity that is unnatural. This uniformity puts the entire crop at risk as if one plant succumbs to a pesticide, the entire crop is susceptible as well–this can lead to famines. Paul told Timothy that love of money can cause many sorrows. Notice that Jesus told of famines were one of the sorrows that would come:

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

While multiple thousands have protested in the USA and internationally, the GMO industry pushes forward.

The Bible warns:

13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. (2 Timothy 3:13)

Sadly, many who defend GMOs are deceived and truly do not properly represent true science, or what is “false called knowledge” (cf. 1 Timothy 6:20).

GMOs are not real food. Humans are supposed to eat real foods. GMOs are potentially harmful and a major risk. Notice also the following:

Now it appears that GMO crop failures are growing. Do we face the risk of famine as well?

In 2009 the South African Corn Crop Failure was linked to GMO seeds(1). “On January 17 [2010], internationally recognized plant pathologist Dr. Don Huber, wrote a letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack warning of the discovery of a new pathogen and a possible link between Roundup Ready® (GMO) corn and soybeans and severe reproductive problems in livestock as well as widespread crop failure.”(2)This past March, scientists with the Natural Society called for immediate action to stop the GMO crop failure threat(3).

The USDA did nothing…

The Biotech system, that provides through “user fees” most of the FDA and USDA budget, can never be questioned.

Could it be, though, that GMO cloned monoculture itself is to blame? Are these chimeric species failing when they face stressed conditions?…

GMOs literally invade natural species and infect them with “alien” DNA. We need to rid the planet of these dangerous species that could lead to famine if not checked. (Bert G. Famine in America. One important difference between conventional and GMO crops is that there is some biodiversity in conventional crops and almost none in GMO crops. This lack of biodiversity puts the entire GMO crop at risk of complete failure from pathogenic microorganisms. This greatly increases the risk of food shortages and famines.

It would seem that large agricultural corporations touting genetically modified organisms (GMOs) they claim possess enhanced benefits for farmers and consumers would be proud to differentiate their products on the shelves from organic and traditionally produced food. However that is not the case. …

The obvious fear is that consumers will avoid GMO products in favor of those not labeled as modified. While other arguments have been made in attempts to justify not properly labeling food as genetically modified or not, the underlying theme appears to be the belief of big-ag that consumers’ ignorance over the alleged safety of GMO products threatens their business and with it, innovations they claim are a benefit not only to their bottom lines, but to all of humanity.

Of course, beneath the layers of this “belief,” is the reality that their products do not offer any overwhelming benefit to humanity, and in fact, in many ways, have become a scourge to humanity. …

Instead of blaming the “ignorance” of the population for rejecting their “super-GMO foods,” perhaps big-ag should look within. It may not be the outlook of ordinary people that they should eat organic, natural food that is antiquated, but rather big-ag’s irrational and unsustainable thirst for profits and power. Those working within the biotechnology industry should reevaluate their allegiance to their corporate employers and consider the damage they may be doing to biotechnology in general by perpetuating its wholesale abuse at the hands of big-ag giants like Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta, Bayer, and others.

It is true the agriculture interests do not want people to easily be able to distinguish between foods and GMOs that are sold as foods and that GMOs are a risk to food security.

The increasing reliance on genetically-engineered “foods” is putting the USA and its Anglo-allies at increased risk of destruction and famine (Matthew 24:7). China and other lands are also putting themselves at unnecessary risk.

GMOs appear to violate various things that God said were good.

There are food risks for the future. The Bible teaches that food insecurity will come. GMOs are not the answer–for many lands, they ultimately will be the cause.
