Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd conceded defeat Saturday in national elections that swept the country’s conservative opposition into power.

The victory by Tony Abbott’s opposition Liberal-National coalition ends six-years of Labor Party leadership.

The campaign had been dominated by concerns about the economy, asylum seekers and climate change…

Unemployment in Australia has been creeping upward, and both parties tried to convince voters that they can guarantee future economic prosperity.

Both candidates had proposed tough immigration policies to discourage asylum seekers from sailing into Australian waters to claim shelter.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s conservative opposition swept to power Saturday, ending six years of Labor Party rule and winning over a disenchanted public by promising to end a hated tax on carbon emissions, boost a flagging economy and bring about political stability after years of Labor infighting.

“I know that Labor hearts are heavy across the nation tonight, and as your prime minister and as your parliamentary leader of the great Australian Labor Party, I accept responsibility,” Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said in a speech to supporters, after calling opposition leader Tony Abbott to concede defeat. “I gave it my all, but it was not enough for us to win.”

A victory for the conservative Liberal Party-led coalition comes despite the relative unpopularity of Abbott, a 55-year-old former Roman Catholic seminarian and Rhodes scholar who has struggled to connect with women voters and was once dubbed “unelectable” by opponents and even some supporters…

Australia’s new government has promised to slash foreign aid spending as it concentrates on returning the budget to surplus. Labor spent billions of dollars on stimulus projects to avoid recession. But declining corporate tax revenues from the mining slowdown forced Labor to break a promise to return the budget to surplus in the last fiscal year.

Abbott has also promised to repeal a tax on coal and iron ore mining companies, which he blames in part for the downturn in the mining boom. The 30 percent tax on the profits of iron ore and coal miners was designed to cash in on burgeoning profits from a mineral boom fueled by Chinese industrial demand. But the boom was easing before the tax took effect. So, economic matters apparently dominated the Australian election.

In terms of military matters, the Australians themselves generally hope that the USA will be able to protect them from China, for example. Yet, since Bible prophecy shows that those in the end-time with the “strongest fortresses” (which currently would be the USA) will be taken over (Daniel 11:39), this does not bode well for any nation that truly needs protection from the USA.

Furthermore, the Bible shows that the land of the Anglo-descended peoples will be conquered and divided (Daniel 11:39; Lamentations 4:16; Joel 3:2-3; Amos 7:17; Ezekiel 5:1-2,12; 6:8; Ezekiel 22:13-15).

Tony Abbott himself has sometimes attempted to take moral stands. He was once the former Health Minister of Australia, and because of his position in 2006 for opposing access to the abortion drug RU486, Parliament voted to strip Health Ministers of the power to regulate this area of policy. He also tends to support traditional marriage. Perhaps it should be mentioned that in 1997, Tony Abbott provided a character reference to pedophile priest Father John Gerard Nestor describing him as “an upright and virtuous man whom he had known since 1984 while studying at Sydney’s St Patrick’s Seminary”. Nestor, himself was later defrocked by the Vatican (Tony Abbott, Wikipedia, viewed 09/07/13).

Because of his ties to Roman Catholicism, it is possible that once the USA is taken over, Tony Abbott, like possibly someone like Britain’s Tony Blair, might partially fulfill the following verses in the Bible in trying to get help from the Assyrians (modern Germany with its allies) after they have destroyed the U.S.A. and its Anglo-Allies:

1 “Ephraim also is like a silly dove, without sense–They call to Egypt, They go to Assyria. 12 Wherever they go, I will spread My net on them; I will bring them down like birds of the air; I will chastise them According to what their congregation has heard (Hosea 7:11-12).

8 Israel is swallowed up; Now they are among the Gentiles Like a vessel in which is no pleasure. 9 For they have gone up to Assyria, Like a wild donkey alone by itself; Ephraim has hired lovers (Hosea 8:8-9).

1 Ephraim feeds on the wind, And pursues the east wind; He daily increases lies and desolation. Also they make a covenant with the Assyrians, And oil is carried to Egypt (Hosea 12:1).

It would seem that perhaps Tony Abbott (and/or even Kevin Rudd who also has Catholic ties) could try to use his contacts within Catholicism to try to improve the lot of the Australians at that time.

Since I tend to believe that these verses in Hosea will be fulfilled after the start of the Great Tribulation and before the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God, if Tony Abbott is involved in the above fulfillment, in that specific way he might personally also be Apocalyptic. Time will tell.

Yet, without national repentance, the nation of Australia is doomed. Period.

Although he has some views consistent with biblical morality, this is not something that I expect that Tony Abbott will call for.
