Donald Trump likes trade wars, but world reactions are negative

US President Donald Trump has made some trade comments via Twitter. Here is one:

Before going further, let me state there are many issues of “unfair” trade.  Trade wars are NOT EASY to win, and will also raise costs to Americans. It can be debated if the costs are worth the jobs that would be affected.

Trade wars were a factor in WWII.

World reaction towards President Trump’s latest trade actions has been largely negative:

US President Donald Trump has said “trade wars are good”, amid controversy over his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.

He tweeted that the US was “losing billions of dollars on trade” and would find a trade war “easy to win”.

On Thursday he said steel imports would face a 25% tariff and aluminium 10%.

Canada and the EU said they would bring forward their own countermeasures. Mexico, China and Brazil have also said they are considering retaliatory steps. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43257712

The European Union — the world’s largest trade bloc — signaled its response to Trump will involve a combination of tit-for-tat retaliation, “safeguard” measures to prevent a flooding of the EU market with steel diverted from the U.S. and a complaint to the World Trade Organization.

European Commission spokesman Alexander Winterstein said that the bloc’s executive arm will discuss potential countermeasures on Wednesday.

“We are going to do this according to the rule book,” Winterstein told reporters in Brussels. “But we are going to make sure that we are effective and also firm.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-02/trump-says-trade-wars-are-good-easy-to-win-tariffs-update

Now, it may be of historical interest to note that the USA LOST in a World Trade Association court when US President George W. Bush imposed steel tariffs back in 2002 (see https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-03-02/2002-president-bush-imposed-30-steel-tariffs-what-happened-next).

The European Union has said it will introduce retaliatory measures against US plans to impose steel and aluminum tariffs. The WTO and IMF have voiced their concerns over US President Donald Trump’s threat of a trade war.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on Friday accused US President Donald Trump of exhibiting “war-like behavior,” after Washington announced it would impose punishing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

“None of this is reasonable, but reason is a sentiment that’s very unevenly distributed in the world,” Juncker told reporters in the German city of Hamburg.

Asked if Europe faced a looming trade war with the US, the president of the EU’s executive body said: “I can’t see how this isn’t part of war-like behavior.” …

EU officials began drawing up a list of $3.5 billion-worth (€2.8 billion) of US goods that would be subject to a 25 percent tariff. Unnamed sources said the measures aimed to “rebalance” bilateral trade, should Trump follow through with his plan to impose a 25 percent levy on steel and 10 percent levy on aluminum. …

France’s Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire also said he was planning to hold talks with his German and British counterparts on how to respond to Trump’s proposed tariffs.

Dangerous Security Changes

Other experts warn that American political leaders — responding to calls for immediate competitive relief from their constituents — may be ignoring another lesson of the Great Depression: that the severe contraction of world trade gave added impetus to imperialist surges in Asia and Europe, specifically Japan and Germany.

Since 1945 Japan has chosen the mercantile road as its path to power, prestige and national restoration. Germany, specifically the Federal Republic of Germany, is heavily dependent upon world trade, exporting a full third of its manufactured goods.

Access to the U.S. market is central to the economies of Japan and the other nations of the Pacific Basin, writes National Review executive editor John McLaughlin, “and hence perhaps to their stability.” If protectionism takes hold, what would happen to Japan and to Western Europe, whose economic heart is in Germany? Protectionism, leading to a full-blown trade war, would likely break the extensive joint defense relationships between the U.S. and its primary World War II foes, now allies for the past 40 years.

Americans should then prepare to witness the emergence of a nuclear — armed Japan as well as a nuclear — armed united Europe with Germany at its core. It’s doubtful whether the American public and its elected representatives have thought out the likely end results of actions now under way.

Former Senate majority leader Howard H. Baker Jr. sounded this warning: “The disastrous Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 was rushed through Congress… and it took 14 years and a world war to straighten out the mess.” (Hogberg G. Prepare for Trade War! Plain Truth, January 1986)

The Brits will ultimately decide that they are more supportive of the Americans and Canadians. They will be so much more supportive that they will end up in a trading agreement with them (with the Australians and New Zealanders probably also becoming part of that agreement).

The EU will decide that Mexico and the rest of Latin America are in more agreement with it and thus make some type of serious trading agreement with most (or all) of Latin America. And much happened in 2017 affecting trade and pushing trade away from the USA.

Europe will get more involved.

For a time, Babylon will dominate world trade:

2 And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.” (Revelation 18:2-3).

While ‘Babylon’ will not reign in 2018, with the USA pulling out of trade deals and/or wishing to change them, steps are occurring that are pushing Europe to dominate trade (watch Trade Wars: Are COG warnings coming to pass?). The Europeans have been working with Latin America, China, Russia’s Eurasian Union, and other areas of the world to try to set up its dominance of world trade as well as standards for world trade.

Donald Trump has stated his firm opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement (TPP) [Trade: Donald J. Trump’s Vision. https://www.donaldjtrump.com/policies/trade accessed December 16, 2016]. However, various members of his staff support it. Without something like TPP, many nations who were involved with it are likely to move closer to China, as opposed to away from it as China was not part of TPP [Timiraos N. Donald Trump’s election has been pointed to as the end of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) trade agreement involving the USA and Europe [Kassam R. EU Accepts TTIP Deal Dead Due To Trump Presidency.Breibart, November 11, 2016].

Donald Trump has called for “fair trade” and indicated that various nations, including several in Asia, are not engaged in fair trade, so he has proposed high tariffs [Trade: Donald J. Trump’s Vision. https://www.donaldjtrump.com/policies/trade accessed December 16, 2016].

Some believe that Donald Trump’s positions on trade will lead to a global trade war that could trigger some type of international war [Katasonov V. Only One Step Away from a Global Trade War. Strategic Culture Foundation, December 12, 2016]. It is my position that trade disputes will be a factor in Europe taking military action against the U.S.A. one day. (Thiel B. The talk of trade wars is something I have warned about on this page for years. Notice something I posted back in 2008:

Negotiations will continue and some type of loose agreements will happen. In the spirit of accommodation and personal interest, many of the “standards” of the European Union will be adopted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as by nearly all of the countries of the world. The Arab nations will most likely agree with many of the standards as they seem to be destined to form a brief end-time alliance with the Europeans (The Arab World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy).

However, over time, it will become increasingly clear that the British will be in more agreement with the Canadians and Americans and that the European Union in more agreement with the Mexicans than the EU will have with the English-speaking nations.

Trade wars and/or serious trade disputes will most likely arise.

The fact of Brexit and the EU’s response to it have been pushing the Brits to conclude that they need to move closer to the USA, and farther from Europe, on trade. Last year, Germany’s Angela Merkel met with leaders from Mexico and Argentina on trade matters–partially because of concerns related to Donald Trump’s trade statements (see Germany’s Merkel is in Argentina making deals with Mexico and Argentina).

Trade disputes are likely to be a factor that will lead to World War III. The Bible tells of a powerful trade empire arising in the last days in Europe, called “Babylon the Great” (Revelation 18). It has long been my view that problems with trade and/or trade agreements will be a factor that will further turn Europe against the USA, and be a factor in the start of WWIII (see also WTO Trade Deal and the Rise of the European Beast Power).

Consider, also, that back in 1971, the late WCG Pastor General, Herbert W. Armstrong, wrote:

And while his basic impression of timing was off, it is correct that trade issues will be a factor that will trigger WWIII. A war that will be against the USA, Canada, and UK and led by a power that will reorganize (Revelation 17:12-13) and then rise in Europe. A Europe that is angry at the UK for Brexit and one that is mad at the USA for a host of reasons (including decisions of its former President Obama and statements by its current President Donald Trump).

Trade wars tend to increase prices. Basically, that is the point. Notice the following:

Trade Wars are Bad

As a general rule, when you add “war” to your description of an event, it’s a pretty strong suggestion that it is unlikely to be either good or easy. Wars are sometimes well intentioned (the war on drugs), occasionally necessary (World War II), but seldom good and more or less never easy to win. Even if you do “win” easily, the longer term implications are often more problematic than you thought (the second Iraq War). There is still some time for this particular war to be averted. But while it is our general contention that equity markets tend to overreact to political and economic events, this is not one of those times.

One obvious point about tariffs is that the entire purpose is to raise prices. Should these tariffs be imposed, higher steel and aluminum prices in the U.S. would not be an unwelcome side effect of the policy, but basically the entire point. If prices for steel and aluminum do not rise, there will be no U.S. jobs created or saved by U.S. based steel and aluminum companies. Furthermore, while U.S. companies would certainly benefit from a pricing advantage relative to their foreign competitors, I believe this is very unlikely to lead to a meaningful increase in domestic production any time soon. Looking at the production of steel and aluminum in the U.S. over time, there is no evidence that there exists a meaningful amount of spare capacity that could be easily and quickly turned on. https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-03-02/gmo-global-trade-war-would-lead-40-market-crash

Tariffs increase the cost of an imported item. The user of the items, therefore has to pay more.

There is a cost to trade wars and tariffs. Those who think otherwise are fooling themselves.

We are seeing more in the world that want to turn further away from the USA.

Massive shifts in trade are beginning to take place.

A real war, and not just a trade war, between Europe and the USA (with the UK basically on the USA’s side) will come as one day Europe will take steps to ‘eliminate the competition’ so to speak (cf. Daniel 8:25; 11:39; USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses). Trade issues appear likely to be a factor that will trigger WWIII.

Despite what American politicians state, the world, under European influence, will turn against the USA (cf. Daniel 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses). We are seeing more turn more against the USA.

Trade issues are a factor. And trade issues will be a factor.
