EU-UK trade war looming as Northern Ireland Protocol tensions hit boiling point

The UK and the EU are on a collision course that could result in a trade war. Although Brexit was finalized at the end of the transition period in January, EU-UK relations remain envenomed by the question of Northern Ireland’s post-Brexit trading arrangements — the same issue that dominated negotiations in the years prior to the UK’s departure from the European Union.

The Northern Ireland Protocol is a series of agreed special trading arrangements for the UK-administered Northern Ireland, and the UK government says it wants it to be substantially rewritten. The EU insists that the main terms of the protocol must remain in place.

Things come to a head this week. On Tuesday, the UK’s Brexit minister, David Frost, gave a speech in Lisbon where hedoubled down on previous UK threats to walk away from the protocol if the EU does not agree to wholesale changes, including the removal of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) as a legal arbiter. Frost said the protocol was the “biggest source of mistrust between us” and urged the EU not to make “a serious historical error.”

The EU is offering tweaks to the existing protocol and a relaxation of how it’s implemented.

That’s too little for Lord Frost who has tabled an alternative version which would strip out references to the continued application of EU law in Northern Ireland and eliminate the role of the European Court of Justice.

The problem is that’s too much for the EU to stomach.

The two sides will see if they can bridge the difference during a few weeks of intense negotiations. Which means the next crunch point is likely to be in mid-November.

If things go badly that could lead to the UK triggering a clause which allows each side to unilaterally suspend parts of it in an emergency.

That could lead to retaliation by the EU, potentially including new tariffs on British imports. Something you could describe as a trade war.

The free-flow of goods and people between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland was supposed to somehow be assured in the Brexit deal.

But, it never truly was agreed to.

This is another wedge between the UK and the European Union.

Back in 2008, I posted the following:

In the spirit of accommodation and personal interest, many of the “standards” of the European Union will be adopted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as by nearly all of the countries of the world. The Arab nations will most likely agree with many of the standards as they seem to be destined to form a brief end-time alliance with the Europeans (The Arab World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy).

However, over time, it will become increasingly clear that the British will be in more agreement with the Canadians and Americans and that the European Union in more agreement with the Mexicans than the EU will have with the English-speaking nations.

Trade wars and/or serious trade disputes will most likely arise.

The Brits will ultimately decide that they are more supportive of the Americans and Canadians. They will be so much more supportive that they will end up in a trading agreement with them (with the Australians and New Zealanders probably also becoming part of that agreement).

The EU will decide that Mexico and the rest of Latin America are in more agreement with it and thus make some type of serious trading agreement with most (or all) of Latin America. The Vatican will also have influence here as Latin America is highly Roman Catholic.

The Europeans and Americans, however, will continue to have military agreements, though many will be tense about them. (Thiel B. A Combined EU & North American Trade Block Coming? COGwriter.com, March 3, 2008)

Since the above was posted, the Europeans and Americans continue to have military agreements, the UK essentially reduced its trade from the rest of Europe because of Europe, in June 2021 we saw a UK-Australia trade deal (see EU & USA and UK & Australia make trade deals, so?), the EU has made trade deals with Mexico and Latin America (see EU’s Juncker essentially verified accuracy of 2008 COGwriter prediction on trade), the USA made a new trade deal with Canada (see Brexit: ‘The end is nigh’ and Donald Trump signs Canada-Mexico trade deal), the UK, Australia, and the USA made another military alliance pack which the Europeans do not like (see AP: France says Australia-US submarine deal ‘huge mistake’), and the EU has continued to push its standards (which is one of the reasons there is an issue related to Brexit and Northern Ireland).

The EU likes to think that it is flexible, but it is still angry with the UK because of its departure from the European Union, known as Brexit.

Furthermore, the EU is working on getting involved with infrastructure projects in Asia and elsewhere to improve its trade and international influence (e.g. see G7’s counter ‘silk road’ will assist European trade).

Let it also be stated that the Bible shows that Europe will rise up and become even more prominent in trade.

The Bible shows, that for a time, ‘Babylon’ will dominate world trade then fall:

2 And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.” (Revelation 18:2-3).

The Bible prophesies that end time Babylon will be a European entity. This European power will have religious ties to the City of Seven Hills–the Church of Rome:

1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.” (Revelation 17:1-2)

9 Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. … 18 And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.” (Revelation 17:9,18)

The Bible tells of a trading power arising in Europe that is tied to the City of Seven Hills. Europe, the United Nations, and the Vatican have stated that they have agreed on essentially the same future for the world.

Ultimately, this will not go as well for the UK or its English-speaking allies of the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Trade will be a factor in what can be called World War III–and this war will be a conflict with Europe (but the ‘shooting’ aspect of this will not happen before 2025; for some details, see When Will the Great Tribulation Begin?).

We continue to see steps that are leading up to it. And yes, Brexit matters are one of them.
