ITALY’S firebrand deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini is trying to create a populist alliance to take on the Brussels establishment in a showdown over the future of the European Union.

Mr Salvini, who leads the nationalist, anti-immigrant League party, pledged to create a “new European spring” ahead of the European Parliament elections in May and to work with Poland’s ruling populists. He pledged to rally Eurosceptic allies to take on the likes of French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel and forge a “new equilibrium” to challenge the traditional pro-EU axis between Paris and Berlin. …

Speaking alongside his Polish counterpart Joachim Brudzinski during a visit to Warsaw, Mr Salvini said: “The Europe that will be born in June will have a different pace compared to the one of today, which is guided by bureaucrats. …

“Italy and Poland will be protagonists of a new Europe, with less bureaucracy and more attention to families and security.

“A great Polish and a great Italian like St John Paul II said Europe must claim its identity, its diversity, its Jewish-Christian origins that only in Brussels dare to deny.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, another thorn in the side of the EU, called the united front a “great development”. So, we are seeing calls for Europe to reorganize, be less bureaucratic, and be more religious.

Well, according to biblical prophecies, that is what will happen–though not as Matteo Salvini likely hopes for.

Before getting to those scriptures, notice some reported last month that statements from Italy, France, and Eastern Europe were potentially catastrophic:

Italy, the EU, and the Fall of the Roman Empire

The EU leadership is trying to contain a crisis that is emerging at increasing speed: this challenge comprises the rise of contumacious states (i.e. the UK, Poland, Hungary and Italy), or of defiant, historic ‘cultural blocs’ (i.e. Catalonia) – all of whom are explicitly disenchanted with the notion of some coerced convergence towards a uniform EU-administered ‘order’, with its austere monetary ‘disciplines’. …

What is at stake precisely for the EU, is whether it can succeed to slow down, and curb in every way, the emergence of this process of cultural re-sovereigntisation, which of course, threatens to fragment the EU’s vaunted ‘solidarity’, and to fragment its matrix of a perfectly regulated customs union and common trade area. …

The EU has punished Greece for its profligacy – and is set to punish Italy if it flaunts EU fiscal rules. …

Professor Michael Hudson … notes, “the Greeks and the Romans replaced the cyclical idea of time and societal renewal, with that of linear time” [with convergence toward an ‘End Time’]: “Economic polarization became irreversible, not merely temporary” – as the idea of renewal became lost. Hudson might have added that linear time, and the loss of the imperative of dismemberment and renewal, has played a major role in underpinning all of Europe’s universalist projects of a linear itinerary towards human transformation (or, Utopianism).

This is the essential contradiction: that ineluctable economic divarication and polarization is transforming Europe into a continent torn by unresolved internal contradiction. On the one hand it castigates Italy for its debts, and on the other, it has been the ECB which has pursued interest rate ‘repression’ into negative territory, and has monetized debt to the equivalence of one-third of Europe’s global output. How can the EU not have expected banks and businesses not to have loaded up on ‘positive-carry’ debt? How can they have expected Banks not to have inflated their balance sheets with ‘free debt’ to the point of becoming ‘too big to fail’?

The global explosion of debt is a macro problem that vastly transcends the microcosm of Italy. Forget Brexit and Italian populists for a second. It’s worth paying attention to what’s going on in France. … If this movement snowballs like we’ve seen in Italy with the Five Star Movement, Macron will have his hands full handling a crisis at home and have less time for the matters of the euro zone. Yes, the EU has issues.

The Bible predicted that there would be problems with unity in Europe:

41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. (Daniel 2:41-43)

While the old Roman Empire as well as the so-called ‘Holy Roman Empire’ fell and appeared to die, Europe will rise up again as the Bible foretells. Even if the EU gets a “deadly wound’:

1 Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name. 2 Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. 3 And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast. (Revelation 13:1-3)

2 Daniel spoke, saying, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the Great Sea. 3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other. 4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings. I watched till its wings were plucked off; and it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand on two feet like a man, and a man’s heart was given to it. 5 “And suddenly another beast, a second, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. And they said thus to it: ‘Arise, devour much flesh!’ 6 “After this I looked, and there was another, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird. The beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it. 7 “After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong. It had huge iron teeth; it was devouring, breaking in pieces, and trampling the residue with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. (Daniel 7:2-8)

The “Great Sea” that bordered the ancient lands of Israel (Numbers 34:6-7; Joshua 1:4; 9:1; 23:4; Ezekiel 47:13-16) is the Mediterranean Sea–and that is the sea that Daniel was referring to. Despite some false claims by some, the Beast power is not a nation like Russia, which does not border the Mediterranean Sea, but Europe which does (Russia, however, will be a factor in eliminating the European beast power, see also The Eurasian Union, the Kings of the East, and Bible Prophecy). A comparison of the beasts in Revelation 13 and Daniel 7 shows that they share many of the same characteristics (for some details, you may wish to watch the YouTube video Can You Prove that the Beast to Come is European?).

Europe is the power that will control the “Great Sea.” And while the southern border of the Mediterranean Sea is currently under Arab control, the Bible shows that the coming European King of the North will take over the Arab powers (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:1-9).

Whether or not the EU itself breaks-up, the Bible shows that Europe will reorganize and will be led by a dictator instead of mainly bureaucrats:

12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)

Notice something from the old Worldwide Church of God:

Historically, the Roman Catholic Church has exercised a powerful cohesive effect on Europe, binding the differing nationalities and cultures on that continent by the tie of a common religion. This, some political leaders believe, might well be the formula for unity today — a reconstitution of the whole of classic Europe, along the lines of the old Holy Roman Empire, under the Catholic aegis.

Where will it all lead?

Religious Unity

First, consider the religious sphere.

The theme of European unity on the basis of a common religious and cultural heritage has been raised frequently by Pope John Paul II. For him it is no casual, passing concern.

He has made it very clear that he believes he has a literal calling from God to unite Europe!

During his well-publicized trip to his native Poland in June, 1979, Pope John Paul II declared: “Europe, despite its present and long-lasting division of regimes, ideologies and economic and political systems, cannot cease to seek its fundamental unity and must turn to Christianity…. Economic and political reasons cannot do it. We must go deeper….”
Nine months later, John Paul II renewed his call for a united Europe including the Western European nations and the Communist bloc countries. …

Europe and the Cross

The Popes’ calls for “the formation of the spiritual unity of Europe” have been echoed by influential spokesmen in the political arena.

Most prominent among these is Otto von Hapsburg — a key figure in the movement for European unification. Dr. von Hapsburg is the eldest son of the last Austro-Hungarian emperor.

With the endorsement of his longtime politician friend Franz Josef Strauss, Dr. von Hapsburg won a seat in 1979 in the European Parliament. Observers of the European political scene feel Dr. von Hapsburg’s views will carry increasing weight in months ahead, as crises force a painful reassessment of European goals and directions.

Otto von Hapsburg … has continually stressed the importance of religion in the formation of a united Europe. He regards the Roman Catholic Church as Europe’s ultimate bulwark. “The cross doesn’t need Europe,” he once stated, “but Europe needs the cross. ”

Perhaps today — in view of growing crises within the Catholic Church — Dr. von Hapsburg also grasps the “cross’s” complementary need for Europe.

Inter-European unity has long been a quest of the Hapsburg family. Otto von Hapsburg has often pointed out the similarities between the Holy Roman Empire of the Middle Ages — over which his family ruled for a time — and his view of a coming “United States of Europe.”

Europeans, he believes, must be reawakened to their historical religious heritage and realize the utility of religion as a “glue” for Europe. In this regard, he has called attention to the potential role of the crown of the Holy Roman Empire, which today resides in the Schatzkammer (Royal Treasury) in Vienna.

Christopher Hollis, in the foreword to Dr. von Hapsburg’s book The Social Order of Tomorrow. points out that Dr. von Hapsburg “would like to see Europe resume her essential unity, and in the symbolism of that unity he thinks that the imperial crown of Charlemagne and of the Holy Roman Empire might well have its part to play.”

Under the Holy Roman Empire, the temporal power of the emperors was closely linked with the spiritual power of the popes. Catholicism served to integrate European society.

In practical terms, this meant that the papacy wielded significant worldly power. Europe, in face, came to be virtually dominated and led by the papacy.

It is to this medieval church-state model that popes, cardinals and European political figures such as Otto von Hapsburg are now looking for the answer to today’s political and religious woes!

As explained frequently in The Plain Truth. prophecies in both the Old and New Testaments foretell the emergence of a final end-time restoration of the ancient Roman Empire. This powerful entity will be composed of “ten horns” meaning 10 nations or kingdoms (Rev. 17:12) — under the overall leadership of a single powerful political figure (verse 13).

Prophecy further reveals that this united European power — a great Third, Force in world affairs — will be a religiously dominated federation of nations. A great church, led by a religious figure of unprecedented authority and strength, will sit astride the “empire,” giving direction to it like a rider guides a horse (Rev. 17:3).

The prophetic picture is clear. In the face of a growing communist threat, a great political figure — arm-in-arm with a powerful religious leader — will step into the gaping void of leadership and radically alter the direction of both Europe and the Catholic Church. Regarding the direction of the Catholic Church, let me state that I believe that it will be betrayed by a pope, which I would refer to as an anti-pope.

As far as the current pontiff goes, Pope Francis does have a plan for a Roman Empire and it includes Europe.

Pope Francis was given the 2016 ‘Charlemagne Prize’ (Pope Francis wins the ‘Charlemagne Prize’)–a prize given to the one who is recognized for promoting the most European unity.

The idea of a revived ‘Holy Roman Empire’ with Europe incorporating some religion is not just some ‘pipe dream.’

Desmond A. Birch, a Roman Catholic writer, has made the following observations:

Several private prophecies of canonized Saints specifically state that there will be a latter restoration of the Holy Roman Empire and that there will be at least one last Holy Roman Emperor. The authenticity of the authorship of such prophecies of canonized Saints (e.g., St. Hildegard, St. Vincent Ferrer, St. Francis of Paula, and St. John Vianney) at least over the last eight hundred years is scholastically unquestionable.

The Great King will be crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the reigning Pope … (Birch, DA. Trial, Tribulation & Triumph: Before During and After Antichrist. Queenship Publishing Company, Goleta (CA), 1996, pp.281, 555)

Catholics expect that a pope will make someone the leader of the future ‘Holy Roman Empire.’ That leader, called the Great King above, is commonly referred to as the The Great Monarch in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox prophecies–but he shares many characteristics with an individual the Bible warns against (for some details, watch Great Monarch: Messiah or False Christ? and Great Monarch in 50+ Beast Prophecies).

This will be a political-religious, church-state, alliance as the following show:

11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. (Revelation 13:11-15)

So, a political-religious alliance will happen and people will be forced to at least feign some type of false religion pushed by Europe.

How will it end?

Badly per Revelation 18.

In particular, and even prior to that end, the Bible shows that it will not end well for Israel (Daniel 11:31), the USA & its Anglo-Saxon allies (Daniel 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses), the Islamic countries of the Middle East and North Africa (Daniel 11:40-43), or even Europe (Daniel 11:44). The Bible also shows that the supporters of the Beast will turn against the Church of the City of Seven Hills (Revelation 17:16-17).

But despite that, many in Europe want some European empire (e.g. see Donald Trump lashes out against Europe defending itself–Europeans pushing for an empire) and some version will re-emerge as the Bible teaches.

Leaders in Europe are pushing for something that will be different than what they hope for.
