EU Chief Blasts New British Prime Minister’s Cabinet Picks

European Parliament chief Martin Schulz is blasting the Cabinet picks of new British Prime Minister Theresa May as part of a “dangerously vicious cycle” that will hurt Britons in the long run.

Theresa May became Britain’s new prime minister Wednesday and immediately put together her Cabinet to start the tough job of extracting Britain from the European Union.

According to Schulz, the Cabinet picks were designed more to solve internal party political issues than to promote the national interests of Britain.

In a surprise choice, May named former London Mayor Boris Johnson as her foreign secretary. Johnson led the campaign to drop out of the EU. He angered and frustrated many Brits who voted to remain, along with other European leaders who believe Britain made a great mistake.

May also appointed other Brexit supporters to major Cabinet posts, including former Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond as finance minister and Amber Rudd to May’s old job of home secretary.

“We will work constructively with the newly elected British government in these difficult times, as we have in the past,” Schulz said Thursday in a statement. “However, the composition of the new Cabinet shows that the focus is less on the future of the country but more about satisfying the internal cohesion of the Tory Party.” http://www.voanews.com/content/eu-chief-blasts-new-british-prime-ministers-cabinet-picks/3417884.html

Since being appointed mayor of London in 2008, the former journalist has quickly made a name for himself as a controversial figure on the UK’s political stage, more often than not to mocking from the press as well as fellow politicians both home and abroad.

In April, Johnson came under massive criticism when he recounted the story of a bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill being removed from the White House to be sent to the British Embassy.

In his column for British tabloid “The Sun,” Johnson said the decision was “a symbol of the part-Kenyan President’s ancestral dislike of the British Empire.”

US Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton was also the target of Johnson’s column for “The Telegraph” in 2007 in which ridiculed the US Secretary of State’s appearance.

“She’s got dyed blonde hair and pouty lips, and a steely blue stare, like a sadistic nurse in a mental hospital,” Johnson wrote. …

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier had harsh words for Johnson, however, branding the former London mayor as “irresponsible.”

“People [in the UK] are experiencing a rude awakening after irresponsible politicians first lured the country into a Brexit to then, once the decision was made, bolted and didn’t take responsibility,” Steinmeier said during a speech at Greifswald University.

“Instead they went to play cricket. To be honest, I find this outrageous but it’s not just bitter for Great Britain. It’s also bitter for the European Union,” he added. …

Britain’s new foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, is a liar with his back against the wall, his French counterpart has said.

Jean-Marc Ayrault, who met Johnson when the two men were both mayors, was asked on French radio if he was surprised by Johnson’s appointment. “I don’t know if it surprised me,” he said. “It’s a sign of the British political crisis that has come out of the referendum vote.” He said France needed a partner it could negotiate with who was “clear, credible and who could be trusted”. …

Many in the European Union have been upset because of the vote in the United Kingdom to leave the European Union. Boris Johnson was a major supporter of the winning ‘leave’ side.’

Now that he is Foreign Minister, various leaders in Europe are deeply offended. This will not help them look favorably upon the United Kingdom.

While it is unclear how Boris Johnson’s appointment will affect negotiations between Europe and the UK over its Brexit (leave) vote, it is offensive to the Europeans.

As I have mentioned before, it is very likely that the Brexit will move the UK closer to the USA on more trade matters. But one-day the Brexit come back to haunt the UK.
