It sounds as if Bruno Waterfield’s blind source is somebody close to EU president Herman van Rompuy, since raising taxes to pay for “the welfare state” is the line the Belgian has been following since his enthronement.

Belgium is also ready to pick a fight with Britain over plans for new European-wide taxes to directly fund the EU independently of contributions from national treasuries.

“We can also explore, for example, the financing of European projects via new sources of revenue,” said the government source.

EU Barroso,Van Rompuy: G20 Should Cut Deficits Starting 2011

BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)–The world’s 20 largest economies should begin cutting their deficits starting 2011 at the latest, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said in a letter to world leaders…

“Substantial consolidation starting at the latest in 2011 should be coupled with structural reforms to foster growth,” the letter says.

The letter also calls for the nations to consider the possibility of a financial transaction tax, even though EU nations are divided on the subject.

I have felt within days of when he was elected the EU’s first president (see Herman Van Rompuy May Fulfill Daniel 11:20) that Herman Van Rompuy may fulfill Daniel 11:20. If he does raise taxes and then is gone or dies soon, notice what happens shortly thereafter:

21 And in his place shall arise a vile person, to whom they will not give the honor of royalty; but he shall come in peaceably, and seize the kingdom by intrigue. 22 With the force of a flood they shall be swept away from before him and be broken, and also the prince of the covenant. 23 And after the league is made with him he shall act deceitfully, for he shall come up and become strong with a small number of people. 24 He shall enter peaceably, even into the richest places of the province; and he shall do what his fathers have not done, nor his forefathers: he shall disperse among them the plunder, spoil, and riches; and he shall devise his plans against the strongholds, but only for a time.
