Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel is again upset with the USA because of its espionage:

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday allegations that a German man worked as a double agent for U.S. intelligence were serious and, if true, were a clear contradiction of what cooperation between partners is supposed to be about.

The case threatens to further strain ties with Washington, which have been sorely tested by revelations last year of large-scale snooping on Germany by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), including the alleged monitoring of Merkel’s cell phone.

“If the reports are correct it, would be a serious case,” said Merkel, speaking at a news conference on a visit to Beijing. “If the allegations are true, it would be for me a clear contradiction as to what I consider to be trusting cooperation between agencies and partners.”

The White House and State Department have so far declined to comment on the arrest of a 31-year-old employee of Germany’s BND foreign intelligence agency.

German prosecutors said the man allegedly handed over 218 documents between 2012 and 2014.

German media, without naming sources, have reported he was an employee of Germany’s foreign intelligence service who said he sold his services to the U.S.

I reported about this story last week (see The Fourth of July and the USA), but now Germany’s head political leader has added her comments–and she is not happy about this.

UPDATE 7/07/2014 P.M. The CIA has admitted it was involved in spying on Germany:

(Reuters) – The Central Intelligence Agency was involved in a spying operation against Germany that led to the alleged recruitment of a German intelligence official and has prompted renewed outrage in Berlin, two U.S. officials familiar with the matter said on Monday.

The USA is (likely inadvertently) continuing to tell Germany that it does not trust it and it will spy on it. German Chancellor Merkel thought she had come to a better understanding with the USA than this last Summer, but was disappointed when she met with US President Barack Obama this Spring to try to get a better ‘no spy’ agreement with the USA (see Chancellor Merkel meeting with Barack Obama: Germans disgruntled with USA).

Angela Merkel, herself, has been upset by the USA’s espionage of her nation and herself personally. Notice two items from last Fall:

The furore over the scale of American mass surveillance revealed by Edward Snowden shifted to an incendiary new level on Wednesday evening when Angela Merkel of Germany called Barack Obama to demand explanations over reports that the US National Security Agency was monitoring her mobile phone.

Merkel was said by informed sources in Germany to be “livid” over the reports and convinced, on the basis of a German intelligence investigation, that the reports were utterly substantiated.

The German news weekly, Der Spiegel, reported an investigation by German intelligence, prompted by research from the magazine, that produced plausible information that Merkel’s mobile was targeted by the US eavesdropping agency. The German chancellor found the evidence substantial enough to call the White House and demand clarification.

BERLIN — Nearly two months after President Obama assured Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany that the United States would never again target her cellphone, a broader effort to build a new intelligence relationship with Germany is floundering, with each side increasingly reluctant to make major changes in how it deals with the other…

But as Mr. Obama considers his options, the effort to repair the damage to the United States’ relationship with Germany appears to have stumbled. American officials have so far refused to pull back from electronic spying in the country, save for Ms. Merkel’s own communications, even though German officials argue that the United States is violating German law…

Another person familiar with the conversation said Ms. Merkel had told Mr. Obama that she was particularly angry that, based on the disclosures, “the N.S.A. clearly couldn’t be trusted with private information, because they let Snowden clean them out.”

American officials said that the German accounts accurately captured the spirit of the heated conversation, but that the quotations given by German officials were more direct and pointed than what was actually said. But the exchange set the tone for a dialogue between Washington and Berlin that has only underscored how differently the two countries see the issue. And now, the USA seemingly has been caught with infiltrating a German government intelligence operation.

According to a NSA document from 2010, the only ones that the USA trusts are its Anglo-Saxon descended allies:

The above outraged the continental Europeans when this came out–as did the revelations from the Edward Snowden leaks that the USA spied about as much on Germany as it did on countries like Russia and China. The Germans were not pleased with this.

The USA has been showing the Europeans in general (the USA was caught placing bugs in European Union facilities), and the Germans in particular, that they are not truly trusted allies. Those in the USA and Canada may hope that the Germans and other Europeans will simply overlook all of this, yet the time will come when the Europeans will take actions against the USA, Canada, and their Anglo-Saxon allies.
