House Democrats reveal secret plan to force vote on debt limit hike

House Democrats on Tuesday announced a secret plan to break through the partisan logjam that’s dogging talks over the debt ceiling and threatening a government default.

The strategy, hatched in January and kept under wraps since then, is designed to force a vote on a debt limit hike even over the objections of Republican leaders, who both control the floor and are demanding trillions of dollars in spending cuts as a condition of preventing a default — cuts President Biden has refused to consider.

On Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the Treasury Department warned that such a lapse could occur as soon as June 1, Democratic leaders unveiled their stealthy plan — a long-shot gambit, known as a discharge petition, that forces floor action on legislation that’s backed by a majority of House lawmakers. …

The discharge petition — an obscure mechanism empowering 218 lawmakers to pass bills the Speaker refuses to consider — is almost never successful, because it requires members of the ruling party to defy their own leadership.

Democrats, with 213 members, would need to find five Republicans willing to sign on. And some Republicans are already warning that it’ll never happen, especially after GOP leaders last week were successful in passing a debt ceiling package through the lower chamber, which included $4.8 trillion in deficit reduction. … Still, some moderate Republicans have already floated a willingness to join Democrats on a discharge petition if Congress inches too close to a federal default with no resolution in sight. https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3983718-house-democrats-reveal-secret-plan-to-force-vote-on-debt-limit-hike/

Yesterday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that they only had to June 1, 2023 to take action on the debt ceiling to avoid default.

Based on recent statements made by US President Biden, I do not think he wants to go down as the first president in history to have the US default. But he also does not want it to look like that the Republicans won anything. Of course, he could perhaps come out and state he is a bipartisan president and make a deal that would involve at least five Republicans–we will see.

Some have suggested that the US could issue $1 trillion dollar coins to pay down the official debts (see CNN: US hits debt ceiling, prompting Treasury to take extraordinary measures. FT: The Fed will have to accept the $1tn platinum coin). Although only a relative few have considered that to be realistic, do not fully count that out.

That said, since the US does have some gold in Fort Knox, it theoretically could use that as collateral or something with the Federal Reserve in order to avoid a technical default. Or perhaps, whatever happens will be used to push the implementation of a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). We will see. Many politicians attempt to take advantage of crises.

Of course, the problem that the US government has is that it spends a lot more than it brings in via taxes, fines, and fees. Its spending keeps rising and it shows little appetite to truly make major spending cuts. CBDCs do not really fix that.

And while the Republicans have proposed something to reduce some spending, what they were involved with called “sequestration” ten years ago, was abandoned and the debt has continued to rise.

Consider that in December 2021, the Senate agreed to more debt on a ‘bipartisan’ basis:

The Senate averted a government shutdown that would have thrown President Biden’s agenda into limbo when Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) struck a deal late Thursday with conservative Senate Republicans to fund the government until February.

The last-minute deal gives senators some hope that Congress isn’t completely dysfunctional and that another imminent standoff over raising the nation’s debt limit can be resolved in the same way without much carnage.

In the end, senators on both sides of the aisle realized that a government shutdown — even a temporary one — would anger the public and both parties would wind up taking the blame.

“I was worried that it would happen, but I really felt that experience has taught us some lessons here, that absolutely no one wins,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) of a possible government shutdown. …

“Default, government shutdown, all the disasters that occur are disasters that the American people blame on everyone. There’s no winner,” he added. …

Democrats privately conceded that a government shutdown was the last thing Biden needed when he’s struggling with an approval rating in the low 40s and wrestling with the new threat posed by the omicron variant. …

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) … told reporters on Tuesday that “we won’t shut down.” He has also tried to take the prospect of a credit default off the table. https://thehill.com/policy/finance/584170-senate-averts-initial-december-crisis-with-last-minute-deal

It was not really about doing what was best for the USA (continually increasing the debt limit will lead to destruction), but about political optics.

Perhaps that will happen again.

Now, that does not mean that it would have been good to default–it would not be. But raising that debt limit, as opposed to cutting spending to live within its means for the US government keeps happening over and over again.

As I have warned for years, the USA will continue to increase its debt.

Increasing debt plays a role in inflation and many in the US are suffering because of that.

Now, consider that the USA is basically believed to be the richest nation of all time.

Yet, it is also the most indebted nation of all time.

The USA is addicted to debt.

Its lusts for debt brought the following scripture to mind:

15 The leech has two daughters —
Give and Give!

There are three things that are never satisfied,
Four never say, “Enough!”: (Proverbs 30:15)

The USA has acted like an international leech.

Its leaders never have enough, so they continually take advantage of the USA dollar’s position as the world primary reserve currency and feel that they can get away with increasing debt without consequence.

That is wrong.

The USA also has no intention in ever properly paying its debts back.

That is wicked:

²¹ The wicked borrows and does not repay, But the righteous shows mercy and gives. (Psalms 37:21)

Shortly after becoming US President, Barack Obama said that the levels of deficit spending that the USA was engaging in was “unsustainable.” By definition, something that is unsustainable cannot continue indefinitely. The rise of USA debt is unsustainable, yet it is continuing.

11. Debt

The Bible teaches that the result of debt accumulation will be far worse than even many pessimists believe. Here is an end-time prophecy given to the prophet Habakkuk by God over 2600 years ago:

2 And the Lord answered me:

“Write the vision;
make it plain on tablets,
so he may run who reads it.
3 For still the vision awaits its appointed time;
it hastens to the end—it will not lie.
If it seems slow, wait for it;
it will surely come; it will not delay.

4 “Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him,
but the righteous shall live by his faith.

5 “Moreover, wine is a traitor,
an arrogant man who is never at rest.
His greed is as wide as Sheol;
like death he has never enough.
He gathers for himself all nations
and collects as his own all peoples.”

6 Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say,

“Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own—
for how long?—
and loads himself with pledges!”
7 Will not your debtors suddenly arise,
and those awake who will make you tremble?
Then you will be spoil for them.
8 Because you have plundered many nations,
all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you,
for the blood of man and violence to the earth,
to cities and all who dwell in them. (Habakkuk 2:2-8; English Standard Version)

The USA is the most indebted nation in the history of humanity and those in it should try to understand this prophecy. Perhaps it should be noted that the United Kingdom and Canada have about a similar massive per capita debt to that of the USA.

Notice the following levels of official US debt:

January 20, 2009, $10,626,877,048,913.08, date Obama-Biden Administration inaugurated.

January 19, 2017, $19,944,429,217,106.77, date Obama-Biden leave office, replaced the next day when Trump-Pence inaugurated.

Official US debt nearly doubled under the Obama-Biden Administration. It also greatly increased in four years under the Trump-Pence Administration. It has also increased in that near two years of the Biden-Harris Administration–and further increases are expected. There is also Federal Reserve balance sheet debt that is not counted these figures.

Expect official US debt to increase in 2023.

The USA is walking a dangerous line on its debt that will not end well.

The Anglo-American world order will come to an end. Accumulation of debt, and then having to pay historically ‘normal’ interest rates will strain the national economies of the USA and UK more than almost anyone will believe.

Those who think the current world order with the USA’s dollar on top will last through the end of this century are in error.

Those who will believe the Bible will take the words that God spoke to the prophet Habakkuk seriously

The Bible warns that debt, and having to borrow from foreigners, is a curse that would hit those who received various biblical blessings as they became more disobedient (Deuteronomy 28:15,43-46).

The debt of the USA nearly doubled under the presidency of Barrack Obama, greatly increased under the presidency of Donald Trump, and is continuing to rise under the presidency of Joe Bideb. The admitted national debt is over $29 trillion, and this does not include state or local government debt, corporate debt, or personal debt.

Debt will increase in 2023.

Have you been paying attention to this?

This game of debt-ceiling “chicken” is not good for the financial reputation of the US.

It should also be pointed out that rising debt is one factor pushing countries to look to bypass the US dollar–one day the US dollar will be worth no more than the scrap and/or collection value of its cotton-paper notes.

Continually increasing debt is not good–biblically it is considered as a curse.

15 “But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: (Deuteronomy 28:15)

43 “The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.

45 “Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they shall be upon you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever.

47 “Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of everything; and He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until He has destroyed you. 49 The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance, which does not respect the elderly nor show favor to the young. 51 And they shall eat the increase of your livestock and the produce of your land, until you are destroyed; they shall not leave you grain or new wine or oil, or the increase of your cattle or the offspring of your flocks, until they have destroyed you. (Deuteronomy 28:43-51)

The end result of the coming massive financial crisis will be the END OF THE USA!

The consequences of increasing debt will be more catastrophic than taking steps to reduce the debt.

7…And the borrower is servant to the lender.

8 He who sows iniquity will reap sorrow,
And the rod of his anger will fail. (Proverbs 22:7-8)

6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him,
And a taunting riddle against him, and say,
‘Woe to him who increases
What is not his — how long?
And to him who loads himself with many pledges’?
7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly?
Will they not awaken who oppress you?
And you will become their booty. (Habakkuk 2:6-7)

Since the moral direction of the USA is going in the wrong direction, it is understandable that debt will increase. This is leading to a real disaster in the future. The USA also cannot expect to lead the world economically for that long if it is going to continue to increase its debt–that is not based on any conspiracy but economic fact as well as insight from biblical prophecy (cf. Habakkuk 2:6-8).

But no, the politicians of the USA have not listened to the Bible.

The USA still has a massive pride about its dollar. Yet, the Bible teaches:

18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)

It is prideful arrogance that gets humans to think that they can essentially completely control the economy and just borrow and print up money. They cannot. Weather, political events, diseases, wars, morality, technology, international matters, and other factors play a role.

The Anglo-American world order will come to an end. Accumulation of debt will end up being a financial crisis beyond what most “experts” and politicians have imagined.

National repentance is needed, but is not expected. The USA and its Anglo-Saxon allies will not last to the end of this century (watch also Might the U.S.A. Be Gone by 2028?).
