Iran says it will defy sanctions as USA pressures SWIFT

The United States reimposed sanctions on Iran’s oil industry and financial sector Monday, following through on President Donald Trump’s pledge to roll back relief Iran received as part of the international agreement to limit its nuclear program.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are due to provide more details about the sanctions at a morning news conference.
The measures bring back bans on the purchase of Iranian oil, which is a major part of the country’s economy. Trump administration officials have said eight entities are being given short-term waivers to allow them time to completely wind down their existing Iranian oil imports.
The reimposed sanctions will also target Iran’s central bank and the country’s shipping and shipbuilding sectors.
Iranian President Hassan Rohani said in a televised speech Monday that Iran will break the U.S. sanctions and continue to sell oil.
Trump said in a statement Friday that the purpose is to force Iran’s leaders to choose either to abandon what he calls Iran’s “destructive behavior” or to “continue down the path toward economic disaster.”
The U.S. president abandoned the nuclear agreement in May, accusing Iran of violating the deal. He said Iran was continuing its pursuit of nuclear weapons, and that the sanctions relief gave Iran cash to carry out destabilizing activities in the Middle East.
Iran denied its nuclear program was directed at producing nuclear weapons as it reached the 2015 agreement with the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany. The U.N.’s atomic energy agency, which was tasked with monitoring the implementation of the agreement, has certified in multiple reports that Iran is in compliance.
All of the other signatories have argued the agreement is the best way to ensure Iran does not develop nuclear weapons, and Iranian officials have pledged to remain a party as long as the other non-U.S. parties continue observing it.
On Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denounced the reimposition of U.S. sanctions, saying Trump had hurt U.S. standing in the world and that Iran would ultimately come out as the winner. https://www.voanews.com/a/us-sanctions-on-iranian-resources/4644809.html

“We will proudly break the sanctions,” he said at a meeting of economic officials.
European countries which are still party to the accord designed to curb Iran’s nuclear activity say they will help businesses bypass the sanctions. But there are doubts about how successful this will be.
Even before the US sanctions were re-imposed, Iran’s economy had had a difficult year, with Iran’s currency, the rial, plummeting against the dollar, driving up the price of basic goods. …
The UK, Germany and France – which are among the five countries still committed to the nuclear pact – have all objected to the sanctions.

Rouhani described his country as preparing to buckle down under assault.
“We are in the economic war situation. We are confronting a bullying enemy. We have to stand to win,” he said. “Today the enemy (the United States) is targeting our economy … the main target of sanctions is our people.”
US wants to stymie Iran’s oil exports
The United States has said it wants to reduce Iranian exports to zero barrels and would sanction countries and companies that buy Iran’s oil. But the Trump administration has toned down that demand to avoid hurting ally economies and unsettling oil markets by taking OPEC’s third-largest oil producer out of the market.
The US strategy relies heavily on Saudi Arabia pumping at its maximum capacity of 12 million barrels a day, up from under 11 million barrels today. …
To keep the nuclear deal afloat, the EU, China and Russia are scrambling to roll out a special purpose vehicle to process transactions and oil purchases from Iran. …
Even if firms can use the SPV, any US company it does business with could face punishment.

Essentially, the USA seems to be hoping it can force Iran to make a new deal, while not causing oil prices to rise so much as to cause economic upheaval. Even if those objectives are attainable, there is a cost to the USA for this.

It was interesting, to me at least, that the two European news sources mentioned that the Europeans and others are looking for ways to pay (called a special purpose vehicle) to get around some of the USA’s financial control.
Part of that control has to do with its influence over a system called SWIFT:

The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) is a financial network that provides high-value cross-border transfers for members across the world. It is based in Belgium, but its board includes executives from US banks with US federal law allowing the administration to act against banks and regulators across the globe. …
Washington’s pressure has pushed Brussels to look at creating a SWIFT alternative. In August, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called on the European Union to set up an independent equivalent of the system. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu’s recent remarks echoed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s earlier call to put an end to the dollar’s domination and begin trading in national currencies.
Delivering an opening speech at the 18th session of the D-8 Council of Foreign Ministers in Antalya, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that Ankara was looking to engage in trade with Russia, China and Iran using national currencies.
“We are experiencing a period of trade wars. The best response against this would be using our local currencies in trade. Turkey is preparing to do trade in local currencies with countries such as China, Russia, Iran and Ukraine. We also continue such negotiations with other countries,” he said.

Michael Krieger may well be right that we could have a world with what would be considered an entirely different structure by 2025. The end of humanities 6000 years of human rule is getting closer (see Does God Have a 6,000 Year Plan? What Year Does the 6,000 Years End?) and it will end with the final time of the Gentiles. This rise coincides with the End of the Anglo-American Order.
While the sanctions are expected to hurt Iran’s economy, Iran expects to work around them as it has done in the past. Iran, if it feels backed into a corner, may well take military actions that the USA and Israel will not like (cf. (Isaiah 22:1-14).
Just like Iran is looking to take steps to get around USA sanctions, the EU is looking to take steps to insure its future existence. Developing a ‘special purpose vehicle’ or other system to get around the USA pressured SWIFT system is something that the Europeans seem to believe they are being pushed into doing.

A recent headline was “Is Trump Pushing Germany to Russia?” There have been comments by German and Russian leaders that they have aligned interests that Donald Trump opposes and need to take financial, military, and other steps to assist Europe. Russia and the EU (European Union) still support the Iran nuclear deal, Paris Climate accords, and the World Trade Organization, despite Donald Trump’s actions against them. Have there been comments to replace the USA’s SWIFT system by the Russians and Germans? What is Russia’s MIR payment system? The reaction of many leaders in Europe to US President Donald Trump’s trade statements and his withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear arms deal has led some to state this is a “revolt” from Europe. Some say ‘America First.’ should lead to ‘Europe First.’ It has been reported that Europe needs to be “clever” as it develops its military and economy to be less dependent upon the USA. EU Council President Donald Tusk tweeted that with friends like the USA, who needs enemies. EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said , “We have to replace the United States.” Will some of the unintended consequences of Donald Trump’s actions lead to World War Three and the end of the USA? Does the Bible teach this? Does the Bible teach that friendly allies will become enemies? Will an ally that defeats the USA say it happened because of being clever?
