Iran threatens to increase uranium enrichment, while Europe trying to preserve the nuclear deal; WWIII?

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani is not pleased with US policies and sanctions:

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced Wednesday his country will suspend its compliance with prohibitions on stockpiles of enriched uranium and heavy water that were imposed as part of the 2015 international agreement on its nuclear program.

With the withdrawal of the United States from the agreement and its imposition of economic sanctions against Iran, Rouhani said the remaining signatories have not lived up to their commitments, and instead have allowed the U.S. measures to affect the Iranian oil and banking sectors.

He gave them 60 days to implement changes, and said Iran’s next step would be to resume enriching uranium at higher levels. However if the other countries work with Iran, Rouhani said his government will resume complying.

Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter that U.S. actions had made it impossible for Iran to continue the way it was, and that the other signatories have “a narrowing window to reverse this.” …

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, responded to Iran’s announcement by vowing his government would not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Last year, Hassan Rouhani essentially repeated a call from Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for Muslims around the world to unite against the USA (see ‘Iran’s Rouhani calls for Muslims to unite against United States’).

While US President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have been clearly opposed to the nuclear deal with Iran, many in Europe feel differently.

Iran notified Britain, Russia, China, the European Union, France and Germany of its decision earlier Wednesday. All were signatories to the nuclear deal and continue to support it. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was to meet Wednesday in Moscow with his Russian counterpart.

Germany determined to save the deal

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said Europe had to “do everything” to maintain dialogue with Iran. “Stable relations” were paramount, she told DW, calling for cooperation with Iran to work “within the framework of the deal.”

Social Democrat (SPD) lawmaker and foreign policy expert Rolf Mützenich told DW that “even though the hardliners in Tehran weren’t able to push through their demands to ignore the treaty, the latest move has a destabilzing effect on the region. Together with other signatories on the UN Security Council, Germany must do everything it can to rescue parts of the deal. Even if that means a US veto.”

France’s defense minister has voiced deep concern over Iran’s threat to resume higher enrichment of uranium, saying that the question of sanctions “will be raised” if the nuclear deal isn’t respected.

Florence Parly has told BFMTV that “nothing would be worse than Iran leaving this deal.”

Iran has threatened to resume higher enrichment of uranium in 60 days if world powers fail to negotiate new terms for its 2015 nuclear deal that President Donald Trump withdrew from a year ago. President Hassan Rouhani also said that Iran would stop exporting excess uranium and heavy water from its nuclear program — two requirements of the deal.

The situation with Iran and sanctions has been one of several that have been pushing the Europeans to distance themselves from the USA.

The Europeans see this as financially costly to themselves as well as militarily irresponsible from the USA.

This will be one of MANY things I believe the Europeans will point to in order to later justify what they will do to the USA (cf. Daniel 11:39; see also USA in Prophecy: The Strongest Fortresses).

Consider also the following:

One key foreign policy goal of the current U.S. government is to initiate regime change in Iran by crippling its economy to such a degree that popular unrest removes the current power structures in the country, particularly the near-omnipresent IRGC. To this end, the past few weeks have seen the U.S. end all waivers on importing oil from Iran, designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organisation, and sanction 14 individuals and 17 entities linked to Iran’s shadowy Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research. All of this followed the U.S.’s momentous withdrawal last May from the Iran nuclear deal.

The IRGC believes that its only chance of avoiding this fate is to widen the existing divisions between the U.S. and the European Union (EU) so that it can generate export revenues from Europe, in addition to those it can rely on from the historically sanctions-busting states of Asia. Consequently, the IRGC has come up with a last-ditch strategy to do achieve this, a senior source who works closely with Iran’s Petroleum Ministry exclusively told OilPrice.com earlier this week. …

As it stands, according to the Iran source, the IRGC has close connections with at least 200 Iranian businesses.

Despite this, the EU has always been of the opinion that Iran has never broken the terms of the nuclear deal – a view also taken by the CIA, incidentally. At the time of U.S. President Donald Trump’s initial criticism of the nuclear deal last January, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, stated: “This is not a bilateral agreement,… so it is clearly not in the hands of any president of any country in the world to terminate [it],…The president of the United States has many powers, but not this one.” After the U.S. withdrew from the deal last May, the EU invoked the ‘Blocking Statute’ that effectively bans European companies from following the U.S.’s sanctions on Iran. Concomitant with this, Mogherini said that Brussels would not let the nuclear deal with Tehran die, adding that: “We are encouraging small and medium enterprises in particular to increase business with and in Iran as part of something that for us is a security priority.”

Shortly afterwards, the EU – under the leadership of Germany – moved to solve the problem of how to deal with payments accruing from business between the EU and Iran, without incurring the wrath of the U.S. The upshot was the Instrument for Trade and Exchanges (INSTEX), in which three of the original signatories of the nuclear deal – the UK, Germany, and France – created a special purpose vehicle (SPV) along the lines of a clearing house that cut Iran out of the financial loop completely. It would use an accrued credit and debit system to avoid any currency issues. The Trump administration is imposing new sanctions affecting Iran’s iron, steel, aluminum and copper sectors, as the U.S. continues to pressure the regime. The sanctions are aimed at denying Iran revenue that the administration says could be used to support the production of weapons of mass destruction and terrorist networks.

President Trump initiated the sanctions with an executive order released Wednesday …

Iran will not like more sanctions and may take desperate actions. Other nations may decide that US sanctions have simply gone to far to comply with.

As it turns out, in the UK, one source is wondering if the situation between the USA and Iran is about to trigger WWIII?

No, the situation between the USA and Iran is not WWIII. But, since the Europeans are very opposed to the USA’s positions and actions, I do believe it will be part of the European justification, for an attack against the USA, which I would call WWIII.

However, that will NOT occur for at least four years (for some details, check out the articles When Will the Great Tribulation Begin? 2019, 2020, or 2021? and World War III: Steps in Progress).

So then, what’s next for Iran?

It will continue to attempt to improve aspects of its economy so that it can try to persuade the Islamic world to follow it. It may well lead a major military attack against Israel (cf. Isaiah 22; see also Iran in Prophecy). But Iran will, ultimately not do well and will not be the power that leads the Islamic nations in the Middle East and North Africa–that will be an Arabic power (cf. Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:2-8)–despite Iranian actions and threats.

Consider the following prophecy:

34 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying, 35 “Thus says the Lord of hosts:

‘Behold, I will break the bow of Elam,
The foremost of their might.
36 Against Elam I will bring the four winds
From the four quarters of heaven,
And scatter them toward all those winds;
There shall be no nations where the outcasts of Elam will not go.
37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies
And before those who seek their life.
I will bring disaster upon them,

‘And I will send the sword after them
Until I have consumed them.
38 I will set My throne in Elam,

Iran needs to be cautious as biblical prophecies suggest it will be involved in militaristic ventures, and ultimately that will not end well for Iran.

These military ventures look to harm the tiny nation of Israel, and could even impact the USA (even ignoring Psalm 83).

The world situation seems to be getting more precarious.
